  • Chris N1CLC joins me tonight to talk about equipment for ham radio QRP stations. We will dive into some of the more obscure equipment ideas that we have tried, and tell you how they worked in the field. This will be a modified version of the “what’s in your pack” or “SOTA pack loadout” topic, with special emphasis on gear that may not be very common across QRP stations.
Dan KC7MSU and Brian W7JET each have a conflict so we invited Chris N1CLC to fill in for this episode.

This is so good. It is whole new world to pack for portable operations. I try to activate if you want to call it that from my office on the 10th floor balcony. Building is a Skyscraper in Atlanta. Balconies are cement and about 70 ft. SOTA Pole straps to a chair leg via reusable zip ties. Good practice to pack and see what you forget. I have tried all kinds of antennas such as EFHW and EFRW. Mostly using KX2 but I have other radios. Buildings are a Faraday Cage. But I can see my results on the reverse beacon. I have learned so much testing and building antennas. 72 Bill KG4FXG

For those using iPhone 14 or later, the satellite emergency service is a free service already included, and gram free. 😊

Very nice! Does it use a satellite service or rely on towers? If it uses satellite that is awesome!

@@RedSummitRF it’s actually reaching satellites with the inbuilt radios an antennas. It’s just basic text and gps for emergency rescue but that’s fine. That’s one less thing to carry.

Do either of you use dry bags?
I am looking at ways to protect my radios from water.

I use ziplock bags. Generally good for splash protection, but I wouldn't trust them for submersion. Cheers.

I use garbage bags in the winter. I've used a dry pack before but not dry bags.
