These are all practical observations & Tess is an excellent teacher. That's the one lesson I learned as an art student who was painting landscapes outdoors...the key to knowing a subject is first to sit and observe. The same lessons are with livestock. I learned more about my chickens & cat by sitting for a few hours and just observing; watching livestock & wildlife teaches you alot about their normal behavior that you instantly recognize when they are in distress. Great video I really enjoyed it.
I have learned a great deal from Tess over the last few months. We have started our flock this year and I had so many questions about how to wean these young ones, but Tess just have gave me the confidence I need...knowledge is everything! thank you once again!
Living in the city I don't know what I am going to do with all the knowledge I am acquiring!!!! But I think these videos are great and love to hear this woman talk. She really does care about her animals!
Wow. What a gift Tess is to sheep and shepherds everywhere! She would be great doing these video tutorials and selling them. If she wanted to, of course. 😊
Love how informative this videos are. No everything is peaches and cream. To have a a great flock you have to work hard and be very wise studying the behavior of the animals you take care.
What an information packed video this is! Thank her for this tutorial, and thank you for filming it and getting it posted! How did she learn SO MUCH??!! And how long has she been raising sheep? I hope you have further opportunities to record her explaining more about sheep care. It's sobering to know of how many ways we can get into trouble if we don't learn a lot and prepare the property beforehand for all their needs, including unexpected weather and other situations! It's really sobering to know one has all those innocent animals depending on them. Well, thanks again!! And now I have to discipline myself to be patient and to be prepared before taking on ANY livestock til we're set up completely, despite how hungry I know our family will be for our animals. Rats, there's always SOMETHING I'm having to wait for patiently!!
you're welcome. Tess is on her 7th year as a shepherd but she has had other livestock for a long time and has studied medicine her whole life. Patience is a good idea but don't over think things. If you are a mother and raised children you can certainly raise livestock.
The Grass-fed Homestead You are an ANGEL for this encouraging advice!! I DO tend to overthink things! I think sometimes, when you've done all the prep you know how, you just have to jump in. Like Patara on Appalachia Homestead said, "Ya gotta burn it to learn it!" And that applies to more than learning to cook!
I discovered your channel a couple days ago, and I've been on a Grass-fed-Homestead-a-thon ever since! I just learned what a "hair sheep" is, as my neighbor's half-Barbados ewe and buckling are visiting my place to do some weed control. I've been thinking about the kind(s) of animals I want to keep on my place here in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains of California -- Never thought I could fall for a sheep, but the weedeating duo and your videos are seducing me, lol. Great work! Keep it up.
I just watched your video about your experience with the slaughter of the four little rams. Although I've watched animals being killed and have eaten their meat, none of them were "family." It's something I have to ponder before taking the plunge. Thank you for having the courage share your feelings about this emotional subject.
While I love that you share Tess with us, I really really wish she would start her own channel! She is amazing! Maybe you could help her get going, Dan? Pretty please! Lol
Jeanette Waverly No. The almost 90 Weim thinks he is a Pug. The Pugs are all older, and the Weim grew up with them. My little black pug girl is the Queen of all of them and tells all of them how its going to be. 😂 We have a lot of fun!
3Pugs, of course. Pugs are, after all, the undisputed rulers of the universe. My grandpugs, Muggs and Doobie, have us all marching to their orders. Sounds like you have the perfect doggie family. :)
Jeanette Waverly Pugs are wonderful! I won't be without one again. We also have a lab/retriever mix that we found running down the highway on the coldest day of the year here in Wisconsin. His owners didn't come looking for him, and we could not find them, so he has joined the family too. Between the five of them and the pig, chickens, and rabbits in the house, it is pure crazy here. 😂 I wouldn't have it any other way. 💖
Always WATCH AND OBSERVE ALL YER STOCK ,CRITTERS AND PLANTS...anything outta character or diffrent needs t'be checked out WHEN YA SEE IT, AND DOCTORED OR CORRECTED RITE THEN! Save yerself alot of heartache, headaches n' mizery if you'll do them things. Plus prevent problems or fix a situation before it IS!

Instead of? No. That is pretty much a done deal ;0) But in addition to...maaayyybeee!
Another wonderful video to help us keep the animals safe and protected. Thank you!
you're welcome :)

3pugs, if "weim" is short for Weimaraner, you are the proud parent of my two most favorite dog breeds! Is the Weim teaching the puggies how to point?
