    Being disabled I am unable to hold a full-time or even a part time job so I had to find a way to fund my hobby. I turned to breeding fish not only because I was excited to try but I figured it could make me enough money to maintain and expand and bring me some joy. I am keeping small only breeding 2-3 speices at a time (that way I can assure quality over quantity). I LOVE it!! I have found something I can be good at. I am looking to start a fish and plant blog and possibly start selling and shipping soon.
    This has all been inspired by you, Rachel!!

      I'm the same! I'm disabled and unable to work. I keep 3 tanks with guppies. I'm hoping to sell my first batch of the new strain to a local store soon. I also branched out into giving Cherry Shrimp and Java Moss a try this year. Hopefully it will be enough to fund my hobby enjoyment. 😊

    Rachel, I had my first aquaria as a kid in the 60s. I'm older now. I had a stroke two and 1/2 years ago. I live alone now and was lonesome with nothing to do . I decided to take up the hobby again after 50 years. Thanks to your videos, I've been having some success I recently was able to breed some Buenos Aires Tetras , and finally got my first Betta. ever!. Thanks for all the info you put out in your videos! Every time my phone whistle 2 times, I smile and open TH-cam, reason? You have uploaded a video. I only have 2 that I follow and watches every time a video comes up. I don't care that you don't think your videos are the best. Cause I love the knowledge you have and share, I love the content you make, i love the humour, I love the quality of your fish. The only thing that really sucks, is that we live on different continents, otherwise I would be a customer. I dont know how often I have benefited from your wisdom and I have learned a ton from you. So from the bottom of my heart; Thank you Rachel

  • @TankTested
    @TankTested 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Being a creator is rough. The harsh reality is that making even the most basic content takes hours-hours that you can't spend with family or making a living at another job. I make TH-cam videos for Tank Tested. It takes me 30-50 hours a week. But my day job is as a digital documentary producer. Most producers in my field are expected to make 1-2 minutes of content a day (although that content is expected to be top notch), if you do that, you're paid a living wage. On TH-cam, you're expected to make 4-5 minutes of video a day and you're lucky if you can eek out a few dollars an hour for the effort.
    I think it's easy to see why sponsorships are so appealing-subscribers should be encouraging their favorite creators to take brand deals. It could mean a bit of financial stability!

I really enjoy gardening and nature in general, so each time you share with us your talent and skill I feel grateful as it helps progress my growth. I have one tank, and I just started sharing it on TH-cam and Instagram thanks to seeing you and others like you do it. Because of all the shared knowledge, I've had nothing but success. So, thank you. Also, I like that you were a vet tech, I work at an emergency vet hospital and vet techs are my heroes 😁. If I may encourage one thing is to not accept teaching/seminar engagements without pay. If they want to hear you, they will pay. They always do. If I was in a fish group I would gladly pay to help the group bring you out. Your knowledge is so valuable, so there is no shame in getting $$. Thanks for everything!

      It is hard to know how much to charge, how to gauge one's value. I am cutting back on speaking, but am sad about it as I REALLY love engaging with the audience in person. I am going to be choosing select locations, most likely on the density of my subscribers to give them the best opportunity to come interact and ask questions and have discussions in person. PS- I miss being a vet tech, but the pay for that position was not sustainable with having a family. It was such a great job though, especially in the 90s and early 2000s when techs were really allotted a lot of responsibility and were used to their best abilities. I am glad the channel has been helpful!

    Thank you for this. Your channel is one of my "must watch" ones. And your store WILL be one of my "must buy from"s once you get it back up :P Your channel has helped that by showing your fish and plants as well cared for and healthy, and your knowledge as vast.
    I am on the fence about the "commercialization" of other channels. I can't begrudge anyone trying to make a living around their passion, and using every tool they have to do that, no matter how "clickbait" they resort to in their pursuit of that livelihood. If I dislike what they're doing, I'll just stop watching, or rewatch their old videos instead. I am also sympathetic with how youtube's alorithms changed to necessitate that.
    Your videos bring real value to the hobby, and to the world. I have learned so much, and you inspire me to get my hands in there and take even better care of my little mini-worlds.

    So to highlight some other facts that Rachel did not touch on. I started working in a pet shop in 1977 through 1998, I owned a pet shop from 2007-2010. I have worked in the pet industry from Retail to Veterinarian Services. So one thing that you must understand is this....in 1997 a 10-gallon aquarium kit...tank, box filter, heater, net, air pump, airline tubing, cost $19.99 Today you can pick up a 10-gallon kit for about $24...think about that for a moment. Also when the economy goes downhill the first industry to feel the pain of economics is a pet business, especially aquatics. I have seen this happen with every economic downturn. from President Cart to Obama. The last one of 2008-2009 HURT the most, ended up closing the store. At that time getting a box of fish in from Florida or California cost more in shipping then the fish, example, a Purple Tang use to cost about $69 retail....when the economy soured that same fish now cost over $300, and in economic times no one was spending $300 for a single fish! Freshwater fish even wholesale did not increase that much, but zebra danios use to cost like 39 cents each if you got 12...they then shot up to a whole .99 cents each per 12
    My local wholesaler of tropical fish use to be open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The reality is now they are now open normal business hours. The Owner Peach and I got to talking about why the aquatic industry was flailing. She and I came to the same conclusion that most young people don't get involved because of technology. Unlike me growing up we didn't have all of this smartphone, iPads, internet. So most kids are not interested.
    Then add in the online ordering, competing with the BIG "A" is hard for a store, especially if you are able to wait a day for an item. Add the cost of overhead, rent, lights, heating, cooling, hourly pay rates for workers....the profit margin is slowly shrinking.
    I have never ordered stuff from big box stores who deal with animals and products. I personally choose to support the local aquatic fish stores of which there are 4 that I can go to. Most of them are 35 miles away with one being a 20min drive. And in all honesty, if I lived close to Rachel, and she was selling fish I would not hesitate in one moment to get or place an order.
    Because I discovered Rachel on TH-cam I have no taken in most of her best practices .... water changes, feeding, and summer tubing. the Passion she shows for the LOVE of this hobby is amazing. It is what keeps me inspired. Because without her, I would not have all the tanks that I do have...especially the 3-gallon tank that has White Cloud Mountain Minnows that keep breeding. I now have 58 fry out of that tank just this week alone.
    Rachel want some? would love to see some of mine in that hillstream tank!
    Thank you for all you do. Just Thank you!!!!

      Beautiful, yet sad. I wish the "millennials" would wake up. I hate to say I'm a part of that generation, but older parents that kept me outside and off the TV made all the difference. My dad used to keep a tank after he stopped breeding cichlids- and now, 27 years later I have 8 tanks and breed cory's for fun. I can't find a single person my age to talk "tanks"- unless I'm at the GCCA swap! Please know that you make a HUGE difference in people's lives around the globe Rachel. Thank you so much!

    • @ladygrndr9424
      @ladygrndr9424 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      GenX'er here (I'm a few months younger than Rachel :P), and I've talked about this a lot with people. I'm in one of the more fish-friendly areas--Seattle. We not only have huge Asian and European immigrant population who brought their love of fishkeeping with them, but have a regional love of the outdoors and of the waterways that surround us. Our water is pure and clean, our electricity (relatively cheap), and it's easy to find aquarist clubs and online groups. I mean, I live 15 minutes from Aquarium Co-Op!!
      And even at that, most people seem to think aquariums are for children or professional offices, and that the only place to get fish/fish stuff is from the big chain stores with their iffy store tanks, fake plants, humorous decor, and day-glow gravel. Even I thought that--I'd last had fish (guppies) in college, and then had to give them up. 15 years later, our son was desperate for a pet, and we thought "Fish?" and set up a tiny tank with fake everything from the supplies we still had in the garage. And the guppies lasted 3 weeks because I forgot about the nitrogen cycle. >_< In doing my research I finally stumbled on natural looking tanks, and fell in love HARD.
      I personally think that is the key--introducing the younger generation to the "aquatic gardens" they can keep in their house. And especially pushing the mental health aspects of aquariums, and keeping the hobby as open and inclusive as it can be.

      @rushigalande1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would completely agree that younger people are least interested in things like animals and plants. They may like to go out in nature, enjoy, and come bck to their digital lives. But getting involved in a hobby that's about fish, animals plants, aquascapes, studying aquatic botany just for sake of making your tank look great is not possible for current kids. They are loaded with social pressure to excell in academics and then lives. Social obligation of high class living. No attachment left towards nature.

    Yes, it is a labor of love more than for profit. I think being the most efficient you can be with things is key. It's a shame that the industry doesn't follow and support Joey, Rachel, Cory and MANY others as much as they should. I find it amazing that LFS's, in my area, fail to follow them and at least try and stock some of the fish, plants and equipment that you guys discuss.
    Had a LFS open up 2 years ago and the guy spent the bank on custom tanks... Had a very limited selection of stock at first. Too late, he finally figured it out and started to stock more than just "typical" species. Closed the doors and sold everything 3 months later. A very sad day...

    My husband and I have not seen eye to eye with all of the tanks I'm buying. I need to think about paring down. I ordered 6 betta fish from Vietnam. Very pretty, possibly show quality, but I had to buy two 20 gal long to set up for them. He was not happy. In all we have 7 tanks in the house now. One tank of native small fish will eventually go outside into a pond, but the others are two betta, a male and female sharing a divided 10 gallon. I have a 14 gallon for the betta fry. We have a 75 gallon that won't be set up until we replaced the living room carpet with tile. I have 2 20 gallons now, and a 5 and 10 gal tank on standby that can be quickly set up for emergencies. I still want a little salt water tank for a couple corals someday. But before I do that I need to consider re-selling some of the bettas coming from Vietnam.

    As for promoting products/organisations ( which, IMO, you should do ), for anyone that knows your channel would very seriously take heed of anything you recommend and know full well that it'd be a worthy of the Rachel approval stamp. That being said I can imagine that'd be quite a heavy burden on you. Loving your work.

    This video really spoke to me. I've loved guppies all my life. This summer I restarted breeding guppies with a new strain. I also bought a few cherry shrimp. I tried summer tubbing for the first time. The takeaway I got from your video for me is to work towards a relatively self-supporting, self-sustaining hobby. Hopefully the money that my 3 10 gallon tanks generate will sustain and cover their costs. That to me would be a success. I'm disabled and not able to work and breeding guppies is one way I cope with chronic illness. But I have to keep it doable for me, hence the limited number of small tanks. I loved what you said about a million different ways to do things in this hobby, that's so true. Love your channel, love your videos. Looking forward to viewing more in the future.

    I've been keeping fish since I was 10. Always had the dream of opening up my own fish store, until I ran the numbers when I finished school. You have to do saltwater to make the money. Maintaining large tanks in corporate work places or luxury homes. The disposable income is a lot higher there. Think of catering to the mercedes/bmw crowd versus the honda/toyota accord crowd.... People spend 3-10k on every setup that is 100 gallon+. In the freshwater segment, people are spending just a couple hundred besides the few high tech planted tank set ups. Those are still relatively cheap compared to Reefing.

    Thanks for this video. I like how you keep it real. The more I watch these aquarium TH-cam videos, the more I get interested in the realities of the business side of things.
    While at Aquatic Experience it was apparent how behind the times most of the companies are. I can't tell if it's just that the industry isn't growing in the US or the companies are just stuck in their ways. Aside from LED lighting, I don't see any product that's changed dramatically over the last 10 years. The companies didn't look like they were interacting with the content creators at all.
    When I look at European videos, the content creators appear to actually make a comfortable living. Is this because aquascaping and fishkeeping are just more mature industries there? Are the European product companies more willing to pay content creators to promote products?
    Honestly, I don't really mind if someone is being paid to promote a product, we've all got to make a living. I just want them to be transparent about it.

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be fair, I don't think many content creators tried to interact with the vendors either. I always set up meetings with the vendors I respect the most, or the ones who have new products that excited me. It IS a two way street. As far as European vs. American- I think a lot has to do with the health and support of stores. STORES support the creators (or aquascapers) and it is a much more integrated part of the hobby as well as much more established (as far as longevity and "trend setting" with breeding, aquascaping, design, etc).

    • @jamiebaker6516
      @jamiebaker6516 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RachelOLeary that's really interesting about the LFS role in the hobby. Someday I'd like to see a round table discussion (or panel at the next AE) where content creators like yourself and others from Europe and also an executive from a product company talk through these issues and differences. Other industries have these sorts of discussions, fishkeeping should too.

    In the Ancistrus tank? Maybe spill some polished stones around the Bolbitis island. The stones sold at dollar store and hobby shops. They don't trap dirt and the fish like the smooth surface to scrape off algae.
    I keep most of my plants in pots. I like the freedom to move them around and you can get decorative as your heart desires..ceramic pots,matching plastic in earthtones. I put potting soil under 3" of gravel. Aquarium "carpet"/ground cover plants look great in shallow pots..Amazon Swords in 6" pots. Potting soils don't seem to cause the breakout of hair algae or BG algae as garden soil does in my opinion.
    Sometimes with an aquascape you just get tired of the same look...potted plants moved have no shock. You just moved them from right to far left-lol.

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yea it was totally rooted. I don't like potting rhizome plants- but often pot other types (crypts, swords, stems, etc). The point of moving it, was to mirror the shape in the tank to the side of it, with some more wood (didn't feel like digging through the stash today), it will do a nice job of that and contribute to the overall impression of the wall of tanks without compromising its utilitarian needs for a breeding tank.

  • @Beregar79
    @Beregar79 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've run the numbers many times and where I live it's not just profitable to run a fish only store and even less a store that sells both fish and fish related goods only! Part of it has to do with the fact that it's impossible (and illegal) to mail fish here and that the entire country has about 5,5 million inhabitants of which about 1,5 million live in our capital area - which is relatively expensive live in and already saturated with pet stores.
    Outside the capital region and the ten largest cities our cities mostly run from 10k to 100k inhabitants and pretty much every one of them has 1-3 pet stores of which usually at least one sells ornamental fish on the side. Most pet stores are a bit of jack-of-all-trades or service specialists as they can't compete with online shops and big malls chains for goods and food.
    This means that most offer trimming services and claw clipping for cats and dogs which are unsurprisingly the largest pet group. Fish owners are just way too small group to provide enough demand for service related stuff such as tank maintenance as most folks have a firm "they are fish, they need only water to be happy" and "2€ ($2,27) per neon tetra? Uh.. that is so expensive. I'll get three of them if I can get one for free! They are live only a few months anyway" attitude.

    Rachel, have you considered using slate tile rather than gravel and or sand as a substrate? I think in this tank it would work great. It allows for easy cleaning, and would attract algae grow for the pleco's. I think the slate also would add a nice texture and color as well. Best of all it's cheap at about $1.50 per 12-18 inch square tile. Would totally be worth trying. I personally want to, but don't have more than 1 tank at the moment.

    I was wondering how cleaning under the mountain of wood/plants is handled, with all the pockets of debris that must collect there. • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I often will set the refill hose to blow under th tightest areas (or a powerhead could be used) and vacuum at the same time. What may not be visible is that almost all the wood is elevated on top of pleco caves, so there is also room for a small siphon
