It would be great to explain what the "connection" actually is and how does it "look like". I mean... OS kernel is handling various connections. They are held in-memory (I assume). They most likely look like some kind of structs with some fields. Why is that important to manage amount of open connection? What limits they have. What implications they have on CPU? Etc.
Also when you create ACL's on your router/switch... how they are physically enforced on that hardware?

This is pretty basic networking. I went through it though I've been doing networking for years. Thanks for the video I seem to have down what you've provided. I've always considered ports, for well known services to be the listening ports, while the sockets are the working network ports. Because normally you don't want a service that listens to only the first connection that comes in. You end up with a denial of service for everyone else till the connection is broken and resets the port. That's why you end up with port 42341 when you connected to port 80 initially. It moves you out of the way so other clients can connect to that service.

David, you're doing amazing stuff, here. I do think you should link your interview with Robin Marx about QUIC (one of the best, most detailed explanations, ever - I mean, he helped write the protocol). But I learned networking over 9 months in school (Cisco 200-301 content - and aced it 😅) but then spent the following 15 months with cybersecurity, malware analysis, and data recover using deepspar, and forgot so much of the networking I learned early on, and this is great refresher material. Thank you for what you do! I only recalled a socket as being a port# paired with an IP, not also requiring a 3rd part (L4 protocol). Thank you for all you do.

Full of learning new stuff in most accurate for example I thought a socket was just ipaddress and port also these well port numbers are used for both client and server at the same time.... Thanks a lot David for enlightening us... Need more such clarifications

    Hi David,
Great video again, it's always fun to learn with you and it reminds me that I have to buy a new home router in early 2024.
As a cybersecurity enthusiast, I think it would be good if you made a video on how to choose (feature to look for) and how to configure our home router.
I would like to have features like:
Run an add blocker on it (something like PiHole).
Run a VPN on it (OpenVPN and/or free version of Proton VPN).
Be able to record my network traffic and monitor it.
And the other things I don't think now that you think would make our network more secure for 2024!
And maybe a section on which brands you know are reliable and have these features, and which brands to avoid, if any!
Thanks in advance and you are the best cybersecurity channel on TH-cam!
