Life On The Lean: Sailing From Sardinia to Menorca | Ep. 20

- Hello! Join us as we leave Sardinia in this video and embark on our 2 day passage across to Menorca, the first of the Balearic Islands coming from the East. We have a hard time getting comfortable as we're close-hauled or close-reached the whole way, so we get used to the boat being heeled over as best we can. This means minimal movement and activity. It's eat, sleep, watch repeat! We come across some rough weather along the way, a couple of scary squalls. We document our watches and give updates along the way, until we finally make it into the harbour of Mahon! We dinghy ashore and check the beautiful city of Mahon out.

I enjoy your videos. I envy the time your able to spend with this adventure during your youth. Before kids, mortgages and life's troubles. As someone else commented I feel your channel is well balanced w the good and bad of cruising. And your both easy on the eyes 😇. Be safe and take it all in.
Thanks for the message Rick, and great to hear you like them :) You're right, in a lot of ways the best time to do it is when you're younger. It's just a question of finding a way to make money as you go to sustain the lifestyle - but so far we're managing to juggle working & sailing!
There is something wonderful … absolutely wonderful the way english women say the word “pasta” with their wonderful accents. They make pasta more than pasta. It’s more than charming. Lol …
It’s the little things in life
hahaha! 😆😆
Great videos! Happy to be travelin` the Med and get aboard:)
Welcome aboard!
Really loved this episode! So many cruising youtubers fail to show the realities of life underway! It’s not always glamorous as you know and this episode gave a good peak at that reality! Keep it up-been watching you guys from the start!
Hey thank so much :) So cool you've been following along. Ha you're right, it's easy to show all the highlights, because that's when you most think to get the camera out. When things are tough you really can't be bothered, but in some ways it's some of the most interesting moments to look back at!
Hi Alex and lars,I am Roland or roly.you were right when you said there is always work to do on a boat,it is never ending.I spent40 years sailing in or working on ships as an engineer...and then retired to a set of golf clubs so I watch sailing video,s love them thank you very much, looking forward to the next.
Hey Roly :) So glad you're enjoying the videos thanks for watching. Too right - always so much to do as you clearly know from experience. We are still in the projects phase of owning the boat and hopefully will get to a 'maintenance and incremental improvements' phase soon!
Hi,(roly)it’s good to hear from you.stay well.
Well done Navica. Poised, prepared, and positive from start to finish. Good pre-sail checks, use of jacklines, a smart watch schedule, and frequent system checks. Seriously solid yachting kiddos. BTW, awesome water-transfer and seacock management lesson you snuck into the video.
Hey! Thanks so much for the kind words. It's all good things to learn! And some of those we've learned the hard way haha. But it's simple things like that make everything so much less stressful, and the reduction in uncertainty (checking systems etc) is easier on the mind.
Génial !
J'attendais cet épisode depuis longtemps, ça fait plaisir de vous voir en traversée.
Hâte de croiser à nouveau Navika au mouillage :)
Haha merci Damien! Ouii en espérant qu’on se recroise bientôt! 😄
Great episode guys! Even though you were battling being heeled over most of this episode --there is still something so calming and peaceful about watching your videos and it just makes us want to get out there now! Also, appreciating the amount of reheated pasta you get through on passage... we do this already and we haven't even left the marina yet!!
Hey guys thanks so much! 💛 You'll be out there before you know it! Haha reheated pasta is always a good idea 🤣
@@NavikaSailing Ah we definitely hope we are :)
Living the dream 😀
😎
Another great video!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
Wow really great episode. You captured passage life super well. Brings back memories
Thank you! Yeah we were also happy we filmed it, sometimes passages can feel like a bit of a blur so it's nice to be able to have the footage to remind yourself of it and re-live it all!
What a great episode, thanks! You did a fantastic job. Watching Lars at the cooker made me want to ask you about a bum strap. It's a huge help in those conditions. Oh and just imagine that sea state and no wind!
Regards
Hey Chris, thank you! You're spot on, we've been meaning to install a galley strap for passages like these and avoid us falling all over the place!
Really well filmed, music and ability to make us feel like we are right there. Boat has a lovely motion through those big swells, I'm sure I would be hooching over the side, but it looks amazing. You also make a great team passing ideas between the two of you. It's not captain my captain. Nice.
Hey Michael, awesome that you liked it! Yeah we do love the long keel for that kinder motion at sea, even if we're a bit slower! Yeah luckily neither of us got too seasick on this one, it's much less fun when there's hooching involved 😅
Did I hear Alex say "hit the hay"? I always thought that was an American saying. Nice to hear it has traveled the world and means the same thing, good night.
Haha maybe I got it from Lars! He often has Americanisms...
👍👍
I'm on episode 9 but jumping ahead to give you a heads up your website domain expired yesterday. Really loving the videos!
Hey! Thanks so much for letting us know - we'll take a look at it :) And thanks for following along, awesome to hear you like them! 😄
Your videos are excellent. What are your backgrounds? Where did you grow up? Did you grow up in sailing families? How did you know enough about cruising to select a Tayana 37? What other cruising sailboats did you investigate/consider? Any plans to sail to the Caribbean? If you are in the Med next winter, will you stay on your boat at a Marina? I believe you are a British registered boat. Aren't you allowed to stay in Europe for only six months?
Hey Cpt Ron :) Thanks for the message and for being interested. We realise we haven't really shared much of this inner videos so far and are planning to do this more in the future. But briefly Alex is French & British and I'm Swedish & British. We grew up mostly in France (which is where we met), I (lars) spent some time in the US hence the accent. Both our families are into sailing, mostly the occasional holiday charter. But that was enough for us to fall in love with it, so from early in our relationship we knew we want to give cruising life a good shot! Things are working out so far, both managing to keep working and making money as we go :) I teach meditation and am doing a PhD in the neuroscience of meditation and Alex teaches yoga. We have the loose plan to cross to the Caribbean at the end of the year, but holding it lightly since sailing plans change like the winds, even more so with covid. The boat can stay in Europe for as long as we want, we both have EU passports so no Brexit issues luckily! Cheers!
Thanks, nice episode! If I remember right, Sailing Kittiwake & their Tayana 37 had a similar problem with their vang. Well, probably you already have it fixed.
Hey Sami, thanks for watching! Didn't realise that happened to Kittiwake too - we'll check their videos out. We have it fixed now but curious to know if it was the same thing.
Embrace these times!! The most alive I have ever felt was on a rough passage. You learn your strengths and weaknesses as well as embrace the adventure which I guess is why you are doing it!
You're so right Richard! Often when we look back, the stories we most remember are the difficult times. Also having the opportunity to push your limits like this is what draws us to it, exactly :)
I keep looking for your life raft but have never seen it...
You guys are doing great with the vlogs congratulations!
Hey thanks! So our life raft is on deck, just in front of the dodger - it's got a cream canvas cover on it though so probably why you haven't spotted it yet.
You guys make a great couple. Kind of like the Ken and Barbie of sailing, LOL
Hahahaha this made us laugh a lot! 😂👫
Very nice, mates! Did it take you about 35-40 hours? We will try this passage next week but in the opposite direction from Menorca to Sardinia. Looks like you had some hairy waves at times. Do you have any other tips? I guess the key is to wait for pleasant weather for sure. How are the marina prices on Sardenia? Or maybe anchoring is a good option? Thanks! - Josh from U.S.
Nice channel! I think it would be great if you would turn this into a travel vlog in which you travel around the world and explore different places. You could split it up so the videos are 25% sailing and 75% on-shore exploring. The on-shore part is more interesting to me. You could explore the history, the food, the culture, the people... That's something I would watch every week! In my opinion, there are too many sailing vlogs in which people just sail and snorkel and talk about their boat. It gets kind of old. I want to see the world!
Hey Stephen, thanks for watching and for the suggestion. Really we're just filming our day-to-day and documenting our travels, and the reality is that sometimes that's shore stuff and sometimes that's boat stuff! But good to know that you like the shore based adventures 👍
Really enjoying your videos thanks...what type of autopilot do you have ?...is it GPS linked ? PS..some friendly advice....never do a cookbook 😀
Hey Ian thanks for watching! We have an old hydraulic Cetrek autopilot which just goes off the compass bearing. It works well but we'd love to get a wind vane if we could afford it! Haha yeah passage food is never very glamorous! 😂
Feeling smug with my dry ass on my Tayana37 Pilothouse :D
HAHA! 🤣🤣 jealous!
I like how you produce this. The cinematics are awesome. And I really like the editing also. The apporach to boatwork is really calm and collected, love that. The only thing is that you forget to look in the camera when talking, you do as most people and look at the viewfinder. Don't do that. Och Lars, är du från Sverige?
EnjoyedF
Thanks Chas 🙏
Hi guys. I just found your videos. It seems I have some catching up to do. We live in Halifax on the east coast of Canada. If you ever get over this way and need a hand with anything drop us a line.
Hey Jude, thanks for following our journey! Hope that one day we make it to your neck of the woods, that’s super kind thanks. we’ll definitely let you know if/when we do! 😄
Hi guys. Are you still living on the boat?
Hey Manuel, yep we're still living on the boat! Currently in a marina doing some big boat projects but we'll be back out on the water, travelling again in about a month :)
Quick question do y’all eat anything other than pasta? JK - just seems like every episode features pasta
Haha really? Maybe we get most excited about pasta so the camera comes out. Of course on passage pasta is a go to for the ease.
You could always heave-to for 30 mins to make something to eat….
Hey kids, FYI, your website domain expired on 13 March. Respectfully.
Thanks for the heads up! We’re redoing our website which is why
KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

Ahh sorry Vlad! You're right I do speak fast 😂
