One way I can see this actually working programming wise is if each of the 8 players got assigned different star goals while they're all in the same level. For example, the Luigi player might have the goal of collecting the 8 red coins for his star while the Toadette player might have the 100-coin star goal and the Waluigi player might have the Battle King Bob-omb star goal.
I like how in the final battle it's mostly Peach and Yoshi who throw Bowser around, and when they all collect the final star, Mario flies next to Daisy and Luigi next to Peach, the bros switched girlfriends lmao

Traditional single-screen play with 8 players would be absolute chaos, not to mention the amount of times people would get lost. That sort of gameplay was best executed in 3D World, as it wasn't an afterthought there.
