I, nor anybody else, can play this game this well, as some of the strategies used are impossible to replicate by a human player in real time. I know there are a couple of things missed out in the run, I did some mentions about it in the commentary stream. I knew I could die and still have the flute in my inventory. I wanted to beat the same amount of levels as Mitch did in his TAS. I could have skipped level 5-3 as well, which I didn't as Mitch played it. I feel very dumb about the 4-4 clip actually... That one was quite obvious, so was the 7-2 one. Can't believe I didn't think of it. Oh well, this was mostly a "for fun" project and nothing I wanted to optimise perfectly. But thanks a lot for pointing out these things and more!

It's because of a bug regarding the big ? block. As you can see the first time I enter the level, the block looks used already. To fix this, I had to die.
If there is s coin next to the corner, it is possible to clip through with less speed and a different angle. I don't fully know why, it has something to do with coins also being blocks, despite that you can go through them.
What was the purpose behind all the jumping before entering the pipe around 6:50? Some sort of manipulation? I know Tompa's TAS videos are about no wasted movement, so I'm just curious.
When you get an item from a chest, it has to stop blinking before it's added to the inventory. So if I entered the pipe any earlier, I wouldn't have recieved the flute

This hack wasn't designed so that walljumping is a requirement, it's just a handy trick to do in TASes, but very much doable without. Clipping through walls, such as at 1:38, is however required in an number of places, correct =). All these strategies work the same in the original game as well, for clarification.

The big blocks are a bit buggy how they work, I can't remember the details though... But in order to activated, I have to die and replay the stage. So far, I don't think anyone has beaten this in real time at all, I could be wrong on that one though. But yeah, wasn't really meant for RTA.
All walls are made out of 16*16 pixel blocks. When you run/jump into a wall, Mario will usually slightly clip into the wall before you are automatically being pushed back to the left. If you jump into the wall just above one of these blocks, it's possible that Mario will land on the block before the game pushes him to the left. Before that happens, you have one frame to perform a jump That's the quick summary of it, I hope it's understandable enough!
No, there is no hacking, as you don't modify the game's code in any way. This, as well as everything else going on in this run, can be done on the regular game as well and is done in speedruns/TASes.
In levels with diagonal walls, there are some special properties in order to have slopes working in the game, it will easier zip Mario up when he's landing on corners. At that specific spot, there is no solid wall below the pipe as it is above the pipe, see the black line. So when Mario lands there, he'll clip into the wall and be zipped upwards.
Real time runs go through walls as well, a lot easier in a TAS, of course. But it's a game mechanic like any other, unintentional or not, and therefore fair play to be used.
You know you can try practicing it in world 1 fortress. Drybones is a bit trouble there, but it's an okay spot. It's a bit fun to see it in action. Actually world 7-5 with pipe and mazes can reveal many chances for the wall occurrence.
