There's a legacy of this starting in Brazil. My old coach Joe Moreira started the pan ams against all the corrupt tournaments and then that was bought out by Carlos Gracie. Now it's the dumbest most expensive comp. Then Eddie bravo was inspired by the comps Joe started. That's how I was told it went. It's all hearsay though.
This is absolutely wild. There's so many cult gyms and shady grappling tournaments that exploit incredible athletes for their gain. Craig was given an opportunity to pull the rug and didn't hesitate. This tournament is so much bigger then the money. So many gyms force students to do this or support that. I hope this shows future generations their value and helps get kids out of terrible gyms looking for their next payment. Gyms should be a community, a family, a place to heal, and learn.
That's 10k before taxes and insurance. You might break even after everything. 10k is a depressing amount of money. It's too much to refuse, but not enough to be useful.

I'm getting the impression that athletes who win ADCC trials don't automatically get an invite to ADCC and some athletes are worried about not being invited back to ADCC if they compete in CJI this year. If that impression is correct it really takes the credibility away from ADCC as an organisation. If you are supposed to represent "the Olympics of BJJ" you must always accept the best to compete - irrespective of your personal feelings towards them!
