I think the problem is that Gukesh was invited and didn't have to qualify. While someone like Grischuk, a previous blitz world champion and quite a bit higher on the rating list had to. Which makes it wierd when they keep mentioning how he has little experience online, like why was he given the invite then? Do they not want the strongest field possible? It kinda shows that they mostly invited him because he was in the headlines a lot because of his age and his sensational olympiad performance. Which I guess is a good marketing move but objectively it feels unfair to the 10+ stronger players who didn't get a free spot. And sure Magnus would probably have crushed every single one of them, but that's not the point. The point is why was Gukesh not made to qualify, when there are obviously many stronger candidates for the invite?

What I think might have happened was that Naro interpreted Danny's "I don't know" as a "I don't think so" which can easily be conveyed from an "I don't know" with a certain tone. From what I know of Danny, I don't think that's what he meant. I think he was just being goofy and his usual self deprecating self and legitimately meant that he didn't know. I have to agree with this. I think there should be more qualifying spots for the SCC. There are quite a few blitz specialists that could have put up more resistance than Gukesh did today. I Personally think it should be a 50/50 type of deal. 8 spots for invites and 8 for qualifications.

I disagree with this. When you are a young prodigy that get's the chance to play the best player alive, you should play every single game you can and learn from it! Think how many holes in his knowledge he discovered during this match. And young superstars can often get a bit complacent and think they are better then they are. Gukesh is at this point basically beating almost everyone around him, but here he got shown how incredibly far he still has to go to get to the top. I think it is a really important experience for him!

It seems to be a consensus among the top players that they don't want a SGM title, so I don't really see why we should force one on them. At that level everyone knows how hard 2700 not to mention 2800 level is, so the rating itself is sort of their title at that point. Also super GM sounds a bit too childish to be an actual title imo.
@@billmartin4093 Yes but that is only for a single player, I think the general argument is that it feels wierd to have the same title for the 1000 or so grandmasters who just scraped above 2500 for their last norm and the 40 players who consistently stay above 2700 and actually have a realistic chance of beating the best.
I noticed people were talking about the GOAT in chess in the chat, and a lot of people are claiming Magnus is the GOAT because he's playing better chess and his rating is higher than anyone ever has been before him. That's not a good metric to determine the GOAT in my opinion because the CURRENT world number 1 is always going to be the GOAT then. Chess is an ever evolving game with engines improving, and more theory being found all the time, so the current best player in 20 years is going to be playing better than Magnus now. It all comes down to an opinion because there's no way to determine the GOAT, although I think Garry Kasparov is the GOAT and Magnus does too, but it's all an opinion. Players like Morphy, lasker, and Capablanca just can't be compared in any real way. Most say Fischer, Kasparov, or Magnus, and I usually do too.
