I’ve been having an opposite experience with I-258. I’ve been finding it to be one of my most rain-resistant figs thanks to its toughest, more leathery skin. I’m also finding that similar to tomatoes, you shouldn’t let your fig trees dry out. I’ve been giving my plants probably 2-3 inches of water a day, which is around a gallon in my 5 gallon bucket pots. I’ve found if you don’t give them enough water, when they suddenly get some, they take up water too quickly and the fruits burst (tomatoes do this, too).
You may be underwatering your trees in an attempt to get a “drier” fruit. Watering more heavily and evenly may prevent the sudden uptake and exploding. Just a theory.

Thanks to you, I just fought for and won some cuttings of I-258 on FigBid. It will be awhile before I get to eat any; I just hope I succeed in rooting them!

Ive come up with the perfect solution at my house for keeping figs dry while they ripen that I must share. The back of my two story house has an overhang where I put my figs while ripening. Its just enough overhang just to keep the rain off the figs but still get plenty of sun and it works brilliantly.

Great review on the Italian 258-thanks so much Ross! Question...Should the eye be covered to protect the fig from insects? I've seen some individuals cover the eye with tape. If tape is a good idea on open eye figs, what type of tape should be used?

    Salam Ross,
This variety in the middle east is called Shihami. It is one of the best - if not the best - varieties in Jordan and Palestine. But there is no sufficient studies about it. Even the name (Shihami) is not so famous except in both Jordan and Palestine only!
The name Shihami is related to the thick, creamy
    flesh of the fruit.
Also the variety which you called Black maderia here in Jordan and Palestine is exactly Swadi. Swadi means black or blackish color and in terms of shape and color and leaf pattern and taste they are identical, I mean Swadi =Black maderia.
Look, if you are interested, there is a master piece of variety which I cant find here in Jordan and if it exist I dont know the synonem or the Jordanian naming of it, It is called ( E'naki) ; which means long neck with long stalk. It is the best ever variety in the town of Till, Till is a village in Nablus city in Palestine, and Till is considered the fig capital in the middle east not only in Palestine.
This variety ( E'naki ) ; in arabic: عناقي is number one in taste, shape and commercially the most selling variety among all varieties there.
I never find any foreign videos or studies about E'naki fig may be because of the local naming of this fig!
It is a semi dark fig by the way.

Hey Ross I’m in Harleysville north of Philly. Just got my first 2 fig trees about 3 weeks ago. Sicilian dark, and Black Mission. I made 2 self watering 5 gallon buckets to keep them in for now. Any tips on how to care for them over winter for example how often do you water them? Thanks for the videos. It’s nice to see a local guy with a passion for figs!

All figs are delicious if you like figs. But I wish I had about 5 totally different varieties. But if I keep planting trees the raccoons might invade the region. I`ll put alarms all over the yard if they do and break out the breakbarrel artillery.
