I hear this song close my eyes and i'm back in my grandparents kitchen.
This is why country music is so amazing and I'm proud to have been born in the south.
Wow... that's one amazing song...
What an incredible song and love story! My grandparents were married almost 50 years when my grandmother died, age 65. Pop lived to age 98 and kept fresh flowers beside her photo on his nightstand for the entire 30 years until he passed. Those kind of love stories build strong families. What a wonderful way to honor her family.
What a beautiful story of your grandparents..that's true love to have that dedication even as you're dealing with the pain and loss of your own mortality! Christine and I always make sure when we purchase our homes that they are walking distance from a cemetery. With both of our families cemeteries completely full, we had to make wherever we were stationed or retired to our final resting place. Some folks thought that was kind of dark to live that way, but I always insisted on it. Even today across the street just north a small mountain, you can see a green dot in the pasture. That's our little town's cemetery and one day it will be ours.
@Tupelo Honey Wow, how beautiful is that?!! So beautiful and sad and lovely all rolled into one package.
@@davidemswiler4351 , I don't consider that dark; I think it speaks volumes about the quality and romance of your relationship. 💞
@@RockN2Country , my grandfather was a man of few words and the ones he spoke were often harsh, but this act of devotion told me all I needed to know of his true character.
@@tupelohoney622 As always, your thoughts transcend the norm..thank you! And you might consider a name change...the golden sweetness of real Tupelo honey is a far cry from the quality and purity of your heart. :-)
I've never heard her, but this right here is what's missing on the radio. Had chills the entire song. Wonderful!
@Matt Taylor Glad you liked it, and it hit you the same way it did me. Also, welcome to the channel!!
@@RockN2Country Thank you fpr exposing me to new music.
1000% it is so hard to break into radio these days!
omg wow
@Don @RockN2Country - I found this song in a music video today and then saw you had reacted to it. It's amazing. You should check out the music video with old family recordings in the background. She also pits the reference in the description of the video area. She has several good songs. It does remind me of my great grandparents. Everything about them was the same. He would often say he was waitin' on her. My great grandfather was the ultimate male role model. I have a son, for 8 years we had 5 generations. After he passed away, we still got an extra 2 plus years as 5 genertaions. Basically my family averaged 20 years apart. We knew there was a slim chance at 6 generations. Going by average, we made it over the halfway point if my son has a child at 20. All our family met young, married young, had children young, and led a good life. My great grandparents had my grandpa, he and his wife had my father, my parents had me, my wife and I had 1 son. Don, I sure hope you see this comment. Your channel is very special bc the songs you react to are mostly heartfelt and have substantial meaning lyrically.
This song really hits home. I am pretty sure any one that is around Hollys age had grandparents with very similar stories to hers. They really are and were the greatest generation.
The man is her husband Chris. She's an amazing song writer.
This was the most powerful song I've heard in a long time! What a great story! Maybe a mistake to listen on the way to work, as I teared up a few times! That line "Since '45 I've touched her skin in the middle of the night" reminded me of my husband, who for as long as I can remember has reached out in his sleep to lay his hand on me, not in a "I want something" way, but a deeper "soul to soul" way.
Was hoping I'd find this one in your videos. I had shed a tear or two to this song over the years. Then a few years ago, she opened for Jason Isbell at the Taft Theatre in Cincinnati. I told my girlfriend to prepare herself for this one. She laughed it off. By the end, as she strummed those last few notes, you could hear sniffling throughout the crowd. When the lights came up, guys were wiping their eyes on their shirt sleeves as girls were digging in their purses for tissues. Never seen a song encapsulate a life and love so well in just a few minutes.
@Kyle Slagle It was totally worth having done this song just to get your story about that show! Good stuff, and good that your girlfriend saw that you knew your stuff--always helps to get points like that. Ha! Welcome to the channel, BTW!
She has a bluesy voice!!! I like it!!! I'm going to look her up!!!!
@Tommy Ward Right? How has she gotten more airtime? Let me know what you find.
@@RockN2Country she has 2 albums and her newest one was released in May of this year
Way to get me sobbing on my way to work! This song was amazing and her voice, perfection....
Those genes. Man. Powerful song.
Pappaw is southern. I had a mammaw and a pappaw and a nanny and poppie.
Great Song to go with an absolute beautiful voice!! Love it 😍😍😍
Hank Jr was born in Louisiana, but grew up in Alabama. When he "settled down" and built a home, he wanted to be halfway between Nashville and Montgomery...and that's how he settled in Cullman, Al. It's a very small, country town!! He has other homes and hunting cabins (in Alabama and out of state) but he considers Cullman his "Home"and it's where he raised his kids.
Yes, "Papaw" is a common Alabama name for granddads. Some of my best memories of childhood came from being at Papaw & Mamaw's house!! Being 2 or 3, dancing in the kitchen to "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On" by Mel McDaniel with Mamaw, and singing "Grampa, Tell Me Bout The Good Ol Days" by The Judds to Papaw ....just to hear him say "Aw Hell baby girl, ain't no such thing as the good ol days... We're living them now!" Hahaha
I actually saw her open for Jason Isbell a few years back and met her briefly. She and the whole show was incredible. Also thanks for the shout out. Keep being one of the best, and most thoughtful reaction channels on TH-cam
@Jody Parrish What a show that was!! What a lineup...
I love this song. Her voice is SO good. The lyrics are true to life and delivered like she's just telling us about it. Just a mention, "Mamaw " and "Papaw " is an Arkansas thing too. (and Missisippi)
Also Kentucky
I had heard of Holly (been recommended her by a friend for years), and I just haven't gotten around to listening to her. I now know what I was missing, that song was incredible.
@Dusty Pellman Glad you enjoyed it. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, on so many levels. Could you imagine being in her living room and she sang that?
Thanks. Glad you liked the recommendation. She has some other great songs as well like The Highway, gone away from me and Railroads. Although she doesnt seem to be as big as she deserves to be. She did write this song. Apparently even the order of the kids was in the right order. She reminds me of Jason Isbell in terms of song writing. Should also check out Brent Cobb and John Moreland for similar storytelling alt country artists.
@Tom James I did a reaction to one of John Moreland's songs, and Brent's song "Black Crow" got blocked since it's kinda new. And thanks again for the rec---was awesome.
@@RockN2Country aww shame. Black Crow is a great tune. Also highly recommend Margo Price, Anderson East, Lukas Nelson and the Promise, Cadillac Three and Marcus King Band for new country music as well. Always enjoy the reactions. Feel like im discovering some older artists who are really good too.
Really well written song! The story reminds me of one of my favorite movies, "The Notebook". You had asked about "Papaw". This term, as well as other versions such as Peepaw and Pawpaw come from the French word for grandfather "Pépère". Since both of Holly's parents are from Louisiana and the state has a strong French heritage, it makes sense that she would use that term. My grandfather was called "Papo" and my grandchildren call me the same. This term has a Spanish origin and means strong man or first born. Some southern Italians also use this term but they adopted it from the Greek term for Grandfather "Papou". Being in Texas and having Italian in my family, that pretty much explains it!
@David Emswiler Well there ya go! And I hereby declare that you are now officially related to Noah Webster---ha!!
@@RockN2Country LOL...we do seem to think alike! :-)
"Language is not an abstract construction of the learned, or of dictionary makers, but is something arising out of the work, needs, ties, joys, affections, tastes, of long generations of humanity, and has its bases broad and low, close to the ground" --Noah Webster
@David Emswiler (aka Doctor Noah Webster), Have you read "The Professor and the Madman?" I read it about ten years ago and it was one of those holy-fvck books.
@@RockN2Country By Simon Winchester? I haven't nor have I seen the movie but both are definitely on my shortlist! I used to be a real history buff but the gradual loss of my short term memory has me forgetting more than I like.
I cry like a bitch every single fucking time!
You should do Gillian Welch. Red Clay Halo or Miss Ohio
@Andrew Kling Glad the song hits you in the feels---I've got a few that get me, too, and it reminds me that I still have feelings about things. In this world that can be tough to hold onto, but these songs are sometimes a good barometer for me. As for Gillian's song, great request. I did both Miranda's rendition of it (which I liked), and also Gillian's. Here's the link to Gillian's--have fun! th-cam.com/video/C4BDphDgZws/w-d-xo.html
She looks like Hank sr. My thought
Damn! What a fantastic song. That's one of the best.
Papaw is a southern thing
Great song, love her voice!
Amazing tune!
Love this song; it was my introduction to Americana/roots country. She's damn good.
A suggestion - Reckless Kelly's Wicked Twisted Road, Sunset Motel, Vancouver...pretty much anything they do. Enjoying the channel!
WOW! That's powerful!
You have covered Hank Sr, Hank Jr, Hank 3 & Holly Williams can you please complete the family collection by reacting to Hank's youngest son Sam Williams song 'The Lost Grandchild's Plea' that he wrote about his grandparents Hank Sr. and Audrey Williams? He looks and sounds so much like his grandpa I think you would love it!
@Talk2Fairbanks Just a matter of time before I get them all---it's now on the list. Thanks!
That's some strong DNA right there. Love her.
Yes he was born in Shreveport, Louisiana
I called one of my grandfathers Granddaddy and the other Pawpaw...I live in Mississippi.
Great reaction, you should react to Ian Noe's "Meth Head", he is an awesome song writer. It's like if Bob Dylan and John Prine had a child!! Keep up the good work!
I'm from Tennessee and I say papaw
@Robert Carter Where in Tennessee, if you don't mind me asking?
Nashville
@@RockN2Country Nashville
@@RockN2Country in Jersey what do you guys call papaw by
@Robert Carter Most of us call our father's father Pop-Pop, and our mother's father "Grandpa." We call our father's mother "Nana," and our mother's mother "Grandma." Not always, but those pretty common up here.
Just listen to her and her daddy singing the blues man.
Hey Don, I love the channel.. Aaron Lewis is my favorite and I'd love to see you react to something from his Staind days, just to give everyone who doesn't know a taste of his metal roots. I would suggest a live video, maybe "Paper Wings" or "Mudshovel" from the Uproar Festival 2012.. thanks and keep rockn2country!
Have to give a shout out to "Outside" as well, amazing Staind song!
@Anthony Miller Thanks for the kind words, and welcome to the channel!! As for doing metal, I'm gonna keep the reactions to the country theme here, with an occasional deviation into southern rock, which has country influences. I've done a few of Aaron's country songs, so he's definitely on the radar. Thanks again!
Don whenever u really need a mind blow check out the album "Southern Family" by producer Dave Cobb. It's the best country roots album since the "O Brother" soundtrack. It features Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, Shooter Jennings, Miranda Lambert, Holly Williams and many others. It's tip top son. Highly recommended 4.5 stars!
I couldn't agree more! Dave Cobb is a Genius! I love that he uses real instruments to make his albums (and even plays on some of them). And I have to say I love Brandy Clark's song "I Cried" on that album specifically. Dave's simple style makes her talent quite evident.
I know you have trillions of request but when you find the time and haven't ever listened to THE KENDALLS, The Pittsburgh Stealers. Its a father daughter diet from the 70s I believe. Also HUNTER PRICE, Acoustic version of LEFT BEHIND. Awesome lyrics here.
hank 3 mississippi mud
Still getting blocked???
@Speedy About 5% of the time. Which one are you referring to?
@@RockN2Country the grandaddy's gun
@Speedy Oh, yes sir! Did you see the video montage I did on it two days ago?
@@RockN2Country yes sir
I like the song but it says waiting on June way too much
You made me laugh,... but you're right , I agree.
I think it's on purpose to be fair ha
