Back in the 1990s when the Military was shutting down bases, they were shutting down Savannah Army Munitions Depot in Savannah Illinois, the Transportation Company ( USAR ) out of the midwest loaded their Trucks up on the Railroad and sent them to Savannah but either the Computer read it wrong or someone didn't read the shipping orders correctly so some 40 plus trucks were sent off to who knows where, it turned out the Railroad set the Military Trucks off on a siding and it took a week for them to find them, so the Truck Company had barrow from another Unit. I was working for the Army and had orders for working at Savannah, Illinois to inspect, correct all problems so the S&P Trailers could haul all the Ammo out of Savannah and go to somewhere in either North Carolina or Kentucky to be destroyed.
It was frightening but I won't go there.
    Just crazy Military moves.

Really enjoying the format for these last few videos where you have a 10 minute video showing highlights from your day of chasing trains. Also appreciate the historical information shown here on Illinois Terminal and CNW in the last video. Keep up the great work!

Nice to see the ITC heritage nit. My first railroad job was as a track laborer the summer of 1976 for the Illinois Terminal at Allenton, IL replacing ties on trackage they picked up in the PC==>Conrail conversion.

The blown over cars were NOT in Jackson, but in Jenkinsburg, GA. I know that spot very well. They were hit by a secondary tornado that spun off from the two mile wide Griffin tornado thunderstorm to the north.

Prior to dieselization, the Illinois Terminal was an electric interurban that used trolley poles to take power from an overhead wire. Some of their electric freight locomotives were pretty cool looking, too.

It's often impressive what wind alone can do. I grew-up on a dairy farm in Pennsylvania where we had an empty steel rack hay wagon blown over once. Obviously it weighed less but it also had a lot less surface area, being mostly empty space from the side. It wasn't a severe storm but some local features - hills and a brush row - concentrated the wind.

I know where those Herzog trains come from. They come from two mines in jones county gray GA, or somewhere else. 3 sd60e locomotives switch out those mines. And sometimes I get to see an sd70ace or gp40-2s. In my opinion, Jones county isn't the best when it comes to trains and such.

It's a reminder that if you are out of a structure during intense wind or a tornado, a car will not help you. If a storm can blow over some hopper cars, your vehicle doesn't have a chance.

    • @hansenfiet2539

I’m afraid so. Thankfully, the tornado had somewhat dissipated when it reached that area. The worst was west of Griffin. Over two miles wide there and completely destroyed the tree canopy and houses.
