Hollywood Squares (December 21, 1998) - First taped episode!

- Although it aired three months into the series' run, this was the very first episode made for Tom Bergeron's HS, as evidenced by the little cold open at the beginning. This contains some clear differences in both the cosmetics and the format that would quickly be changed; see if you can spot them all!
Celebrities are Brian Austin Green, Richard Jeni, Laraine Newman, Caroline Rhea, Jeffrey Tambor, Traci Bingham, Jeff Cesario, Bruce Vilanch (with an... interesting outfit), and who else but Whoopi Goldberg.

This version of Hollywood Squares worked so well. Such a great afternoon show.
Production on a new version of Hollywood Squares is underway for a primetime broadcast in January 2025 on CBS.
OMG. I CAN'T WAIT! I WAS GOING TO GET IN TOUCH WITH HOLLYWOOD TO BRING BACK THE SHOW.
Differences:
-Different sound effect for adding the score
-The gameboard didn't change color to red in the bonus round
-Pick a Star, Win a Prize
-Envelopes were noticeable smaller and had the logo on the prize cards
-Celebrity nameplates were bigger
-The 'X' and 'O's on the contestant podiums are pink instead of blue
and games are worth $500
If contestant didn't have any money, no consolation $250($500)
@@garrygriffy1866 Also played two secret square games vs. one.
The yellow border around the game board x and o's are wood borders too
Also the upper part of the backdrop behind Tom was in a different shade of brown as well. Here it’s in a normal shade of brown but in almost all but the season finale taped episodes, the upper portion of the backdrop behind Tom was in a darker shade of wooden brown.
Happy 25th Anniversary to Hollywood Squares!
The things I'd do to have this on television again.
The original SFX for tallied dollar totals was also used for passing spins on GSN's "Whammy!: The All New Press Your luck".

That's weird. There's an episode with Joe vs Cheryl and I thought that's the actual pilot seeing as they had a little bumper - while this, despite being the first taped episode, was aired a different day.
yeah i thought joe vs cheryl was the actual pilot cause i think that episode aired on december 21st.
@@garrygriffy1866 Exactly. I personally think this is December 22.
@@technospyform1578 i do too
Third version when my dad was not working on game shows.
I remember watching this as a kid.
thanks for the thumbs up/liking The Guy with the Games
Wow that’s weird they had to ask what a tsunami was.

Can you please upload the episode of h2 hollywood squares with Judge Joe brown?
*MATCH GAME:* Alec Baldwin
*HOLLYWOOD SQUARES:* Tom Bergeron

My critique on the end game in this episode: I don’t find it fair to win a prize just by picking a square. There’s a reason as to why for later-taped episodes they changed the endgame to have them go through a question.
I'd not say its' unfair, Marshall's Squares did it routinely. But I imagine doing this hurt the budget having to give something away every single day, hence why they added the question element to it later.
The Guy with the Games i think this is like the premiere episode
I thought it aired on September 1998 but why December 1998?
they aired the episodes way out of order during the 1998-1999 season due to the fact that there were no returning champions. Also of note is that this was the first taped episode for this week but the second one aired
@@garrygriffy1866 huh.. That's weird.
You’re right though, this version of Hollywood Squares DID start in September 1998
@@jacobrichardson1952 yeah its odd. every week of shows was aired out of order and the episodes within the week were also shown out of order. GSN and gametv aired the shows in taping order
@@garrygriffy1866 still miss this show.
Definitely NOT the first aired episode since Rosie O’Donnell was one of the celebs
More episodes please
The question about how Pearl Jam got its name isn't correct. If you're curious look it up.

Tom Bergeron.
Great show but how far woopie has fallen to crazy.
So sorry she disagrees with you 🙄
This is the pilot episode?
Pretty much. They called the first 10 taped episodes the "lost episodes" and aired them through Christmas 1998 and New Year's 1999
2:32 he said ROBERTSON not Robinson
I didn't really notice anything different, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego had more noticeable differences than this
So this is the pilot?
Yes
@@rhyancoleman6462 These were episodes #1001-#1005. They also aired on GSN March 30-April 3, 2009.
I thought so! I like the orange/ peach x's and o's in the contestant desks better
No, this is not the pilot, just the first taped episode.
@@supersaver87
Techno Spyform1 says he thought Joe Vs. Cheryl was the first one taped, and he's right. This one is actually #1002. There exists an episode guide on U.S. Game Shows Wiki.
