1934 Lane cedar chest. A great find. Not a litter box or something for children to play in. Surely you meant that as a joke. A hope chest or a place to store keepsakes without the worry of moths.
Beautiful. We need an "after" of the cedar chest once FD fixes it. Also, the locks on the chests are illegal now, for exactly the reason you mentioned. So, remove the lock, or at least remove the mechanism (the tongue thing) on the lock that allows it to lock. That way it will be much safer. You can purchase slow closers and add one to make it safer for small people.
Nice little haul ! It’s good that Helen chose a salad . Thank you for rescuing that Lane cedar chest . Please show how you are fixing it . Maybe one of your daughters would like it ?
I always wanted a Lane "hope" chest, my friend had one and started her marriage with dishes, silverware, towels etc. I started mine, with a lot of *hope*...🌹💃
Heavens love the cedar chest, great find frugal daddy. A varied haul, but the thought of banana bread cooking on a cold day- yum. Appreciate the cooking hints for your finds, as it gives us all culinary tasty ideas, thanks frugal mum ❤️🛒🛍️❤️🛒🛍️
I'm a Nana too. I was asked what I would like to be called and I chose Nana. I think it was thoughtful of my daughter to let me have a say so because my MIL wanted to be Gramma and her daughter had the first grandchild and started calling her Mamaw. She had14 grandchildren and they all picked up the name Mamaw from the first one. She actually hated it. 😢
I had a Nana, too. She was my favorite person. Reminds me of the Hope Chest she purchased for me when I graduated from HS. Still have it ❤ btw it wasn't in 1934 lol
Good morning from Brisbane Australia 🇦🇺.rain ,hail or snow is not going to stop daddy from diving. Love the wooden chest it reminds me of what they would call a glory box .
In USA , the south were I'm from, we called it a hope chest where you would make a quilt for instance, and save it for when you hopefully got married. 😊
Happy Sunday ❤ and Hello to New Subscriber and Hello New Friends. Stay Warm and Be careful Frugal Daddy. Awesome score and Let Countdown to Spring. Have a Amazing Day ❤❤❤
In the 70's the girls got mini Lane cedar chests in high school used for jewelry.I have mine in my bedroom. As far as I can remember they were given to us in hopes that our families would buy the full size "Hope Chest" that would be filled with things for our wedding. It all seems outdated now. In 2020 my daughter won a cedar hope chest built by the high school shop class. It is beautifully done and currently is in my living room since it is too large for her house.
We received the Lane jewelry boxes when I was in high school in the 1960s. I loved the smell of the cedar, and I was so jealous of my friends who did get hope chests. However, there was no "hope" for me to get one. I was one of a blended family of 7 kids, and there was no money to waste on expensive stuff like hope chests. I felt lucky to have a "bedroom" for myself, only because it it was so small that one twin bed took up half the room, so not much room for it anyway. (sigh.)
Great surprise 😮 very nice ceader chest it worth the cold&snow never know what's out there I took a chance full car not to many diver out there 🥶nice dive❤
Frugal family, you stay safe, and warm cause it looks down right freezing over there, saying that it's not much different in England, lately we've had it in the minuses. Nice find by the way Daddy, you'll have to let us know what you do with the blanket box, oh and show us the soaps Mummy if you make them as well. See y'all next time....🥰🇬🇧🐾🐾🏡❄️
Looks exactly like mine. Cedar chests made to protect the blankets from moths. Our family tends to move a lot. Perfect size for my cat to sit on a rug and look out the windows. Next move will be long distance. Have the hope chest now, but family agrees, way too much to lug around. It is not going with me on the next move, which will be long distance.
I have a trunk just like that now in my room! be careful about herbs, a lot of people don't know lavender, even the scent can make a dog sick, as with t tree oils and scent, so please look up the ingredients before making the soap or use the oils and such around your pets. The hope chest is where you put your old clothes and house stuff like covers, and baby clothes to hand down to your children so they have a start of their first house or apartment or given with these items at a wedding. I keep towels and blankets, and curtains and such in mine to protect them against bugs and such. I hope to give this to my son one day.
It's a Lane. They were made to.last I got mine when I was 16 I'm 77 now and I still use it for blankets.
that is what was called a "hope chest". Canadian girls would buy stuff and store in such preparing in case they got married.

I have one. From the 80s tho. I wish I had my mom's. That's a whole heartbreaking story. Enjoy your dive.
Beautiful cedar chest, I had one of these also from my grandmother. With moving several times the bottom fell out and I had to throw it away.😟😖
Children's bones in the cedar chest..what..hahaha! My grandmother had something similar but it was full of photos and records!
💪💯😁👍
I got a carved wooden chess set in a case from the dumpster yesterday. I only check indoor dumpsters. Near Chicago. Tina, Al's wife
