Hi, John Hunter from REL here. We get this question far too often, so we thought we'd answer it for you. We got the baby of the line, the Tzero MKIII, and the question is, how does this compare up and how do I make that decision between that and the T/5x. Very different pieces, even though they're both relatively compact. So how best to think of these? A Tzero is a phenomenal piece for things like studies, libraries, relatively small rooms.
    0:30
And if that's what you've got, fantastic because we've got you taken care of. When you move up to a 5/x you're talking about something that can fill sort of an average suburban living room. Something along the lines of a 14 by 18 foot living room or even larger. Where I live, which is an open floor plan and it seems to fill even that space. I mean, gosh, you must have thick end of 1200 square feet on that floor and it's all communicative and yet it works just fine.
    1:00
So, this is a much bigger, more serious piece that fills much larger spaces. It also works with different kinds of speakers. You're really better off with the Tzero pairing that up with relatively small speakers. Why? A six and a half inch, even when designed to really do deep bass will go up and reach better with a small speaker. So there are all kinds of speakers that use four, four and a half inch mid woofers and a tweeter that doesn't go deep enough, really to connect up with something like a 5/x.
    1:30
So this one will go literally up, pretty clean nature, to about 55 or 60 Hertz. That's very different than a 5/x, which wants to see a crossover somewhere probably in the 40, 45 Hertz region. And so, strokes for folks, right? You have something designed for smaller rooms designed to really perfectly couple with much smaller speakers that themselves don't go down and produce much of any real bass. And you have a 5/x, which is a really proper state of the art subwoofer designed for smaller and medium-sized spaces.
    2:00
In terms of the speakers that would partner with. This piece works well with speakers up to probably the two to $3,000 range. Here, you're probably best left at a thousand dollars and below in terms of having it mate properly. That is a broad assertion, filled with all kinds of gaps. What we don't want people doing is, is buying this because they're looking at a little tiny thumbnail on our website or whatever and imagining the two of these are kind of sort of very similar because thumbnails don't allow you to see the size. So we've made it a point that you can actually see both of them side by side and realize just how much more substantial this piece is.

Great video,, and fully agree. Two REL T-Zero Mk III's for me in my library (hooked up to my amp at line level and with Q Acoustics Concept 20s and stands) makes for great musicality, fills the room without being overbearing, and the small size of the cabinets means they fit neatly behind each speaker stand.

This is very good advice as I discovered first hand today. I have the T Zero sub supporting the bottom end of a pair of Dynaudio Emit M 10s ( With port bungs in) in my office desktop system and it integrates really well with them and my room. No shortage of bass at all even down to 35hz.I tried the T5i in its place to see if it might give greater bass taughtness and extension. Despite tweaking the crossover, phase and level settings, I just could not get it to sound right. It made everything sound muddy. It might work better in a different room with a different system of course, but it was a relief to put the T Zero back. Sometimes, more is less.

@@MrHellrider9 Often a sub with a bigger drive unit can sound less agile and musical due to the mass of the cone. I have had a similar result with my home system when I tried a BK Electronics 12" sub instead of my 10" one. A sealed sub is a must for music. I recommend you consider a pair of 10" BK Electronics XLS300 subs instead of REL T zeros as your floorstanders will definitely need subs with greater output and extension than the T zeros can deliver.

Hi John thank you for the video. I have Monitor Audio Silver 100 with Cambridge Audio CXA61 on my desk (computer setup). The silver 100 already has a 8-inch C-CAM RST bass/mid driver and my bed room is medium/small size. Do you think the TZero MKIII would be a good choice? Thank you for reaching out. The Tzero Mk.III can work well in small-to-medium sized rooms, though for pairing with your Monitor Audio Silver 100s you will notice a significantly improvement by moving up in size to the T/5x. Compared to the Tzero Mk.III, the T/5x is faster and more dynamic in it's output, allowing for a more seamless blend with these speakers.

Just picked up a T/5x yesterday. Got to admit, it so much more musical than my Paradigm 10" which didn't last 3 years. Kicks just as hard, but the low bass is punchy, not boomy, and spatial. Paired up with the Paradigm studio 30's, my system now has a wonderfully pleasant depth to it. Good job Rel. BTW, I utilized my turntable ground for the black wire instead of the negative on the speaker output.

I'm hoping John Hunter is still monitoring this thread! My question concerns my large open baffle Decware ZF15M clones, which have full-range 15" drivers and roll off around 50Hz. I'm currently using my T0 with them in a 19' x 12' room ( I listen across the short axis towards the right-hand side). I have a pair of Harbeth P3ESR XD speaker placed across a room 4.8 m wide and 6.5 m long (31.2 sq. m or roughly 330 sq. feet). Your website states that I should pair this with a T/7x, yet my Harbeths are -6 dB at 75 hz, so based on your video I thought I should get a T Zero unit to get up to that frequency better? I currently have an ancient original REL Storm I that I use but the base is a bit muddy no matter how I tweak it, and I tend to run it at really low output (9 o'clock), and crossover about 36 hz to avoid boom.

Thank you for reaching out. The Tzero Mk.III can perform well with your Harbeth P3ESR XD speakers in a smaller enclosed room, though based on the size of your room we would recommend either a single T/7x or a pair of T/5x as being the best option for pairing with these speakers. Either of these options will have greater output power than the Tzero Mk.III, which will allow for stronger and deeper sub-bass output in your room, while still being fast and responsive enough to blend well with the Harbeth speakers.

Which of these two subwoofers would REL recommend to pair with Harbeth P3ESR XD speakers in a 12' x 20' room (which is actually 30' long if you include past the kitchen bartop and 16' wide where the hall opens up at the end of a dividing wall along which the speakers stand at one end facing down into the long room)? I am trying to strike the perfect balance between lower frequency representation and audio quality without it being too booming or bothersome to my duplex neighbor (the division between our units seems very good with no noise heard between).

Thank you for asking. The answer depends somewhat on the size of your listening room. for use in a small room, the Tzero Mk.III can work well with these speakers, though in a more moderate-sized room the T/5x will be the better match, due to it's increased amplifier power and larger driver. In a larger listening room, it would be worth considering the T/7x for use in this system.

The T zero is a hifi bargain if you can use the fancy cable as you can tune the upper base to match any smaller speakers. It does two things - relieves the bass/mid cone stress as you don’t need to crank up the volume and with a few tests your ears can tune the combo as an integrated system. my T Zero works fine in a 19 x 12 foot lounge. Hi. I'm thinking of getting one of these for my small room. Do I have to turn on and off each time I use it? Or does it go into a standby mode automatically when there's no signal. I've heard that using the standby mode shortens the lifetime....

    • @RELAcoustics

Thank you for reaching out. T/5x subwoofers sold in North America do not feature a standby circuit, while T/5x subwoofers sold in all other regions do feature a standby circuit. Tzero Mk.III subwoofers feature a standby circuit regardless of region. For units which feature a standby circuit, when selected using the back panel toggle switch the subwoofer will go into standby mode after 30 minutes of no signal reaching it's input filter circuit.
Powering the subwoofer off when not in use or using the standby feature will not shorten the life of the subwoofer, though electronics in general do perform best when left fully powered on at all times, and this is especially the case with amplifiers.

Hello. My Dali Rubicon 2s have 6 1/2’’ woofers on them, yet their frequency range is 50-26000hz. Which one would you guys recommend, since you say ‘the t5x wants to see crossover 40-45hz region’, disregarding the size of my room?

Would a stereo setup(2subs) be better or just 1 sub be enough? Or do i get a bigger sub, say a S510? My main speaker is B&W 706S2 in a 20x30 living room. Thanks in advance.

In most cases, a stereo pair of subwoofers will out-perform a single subwoofer. That being said, you can always start with a single unit, and add the second later on.
For use in this size of room, we recommend the T/9x as being the best option for pairing with your B&W 706 S2 speakers. A stereo pair of T/9x will be ideal, though again you can always start with a single subwoofer if necessary.

how would the T/5x pair with the Magnepan LRS +, considering that they start to roll of at about 100hz and the optimal freq crossover on the 5x is below 50hz ?

    • @RELAcoustics
      @RELAcoustics  ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you for reaching out. While the Crossover on the T/5x in most systems will be set below 50Hz, it is possible to set the Crossover higher and still get exceptional results, and in our experience the T/5x is an excellent choice for pairing with the Magnepan LRS+ speakers assuming that your system is set up in an average-sized room.

Been wondering which sub will work best with my Vanatoo T1 Encores powered speakers. T1-E has a frequency range of 40Hz to 20kHz. Also the Vanatoo manual states they have their own auto-set crossover point. Wondering if the T5x allows you to turn off or disable the subwoofer crossover since the speaker does it automatically. New to all this so any recommendations will be helpful.

    • @RELAcoustics
      @RELAcoustics  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you for reaching out. If your system is placed in a small enclosed room (such as a home office) then we typically recommend the Tzero Mk.III as being the best option for pairing with the Vanatoo Transparent One Encore speakers, though if the system is placed in a larger room then the T/5x would be an excellent choice. With either of these subwoofers, if you want the crossover filter within the Transparent One speakers to completely control the sub's output then it will be best to connect to the REL's .1/LFE input, which completely bypasses the subwoofer's crossover filter circuit. Or, you could connect to the Low Level input on the subwoofer and use it's Crossover dial as a fine-tuning control for achieving a seamless blend with the Transparent One speakers. Either option can work well, and it would be worth trying both to see which sounds best to your ears and in your room.

Really great advice. I was looking at a 5x to replace my T zero with a pair of small MA Radius 90 stand mounted speakers that tail off at about 80hz. They are really great sounding for most music. I think I’d be better with a second T Zero now to improve the upper bass. I understand that using a pair of subs has some sonic advantage too to help increase the stereo stage. My new Marantz N1711 also has two sub outs for AV use. So in theory I get the best of both worlds. I was going to upgrade my front speakers to the new MA Silver 7G and use the bi-wiring option from the Marantz that ups the front speakers to 100w per channel into 8 ohms but that is going to cost another £1150 for potentially a similar experience. However they would be best served with a 5x or 7x based on this video which would end up costing another £650. It would be interesting to hear if a 5x and a T zero can be combined with my Radius 90s to have the best of all worlds - getting the upper base extension then in filling the lower base too. I may do the home trial to see if that works. My wife loves our Radius 90s x 4 on their very elegant stands and is rather reluctant to swap the front pair out for the much bigger (visually) silver 200 v7s.

When using multiple subwoofers in a stereo pair configuration, we strongly recommend that both units be the same matching model. This helps to ensure that the low-frequency performance of your system is balanced and even from left to right. If you plan on keeping the Monitor Audio Radius 90 speakers in this system, then adding a second Tzero to make a stereo pair would be an excellent choice. However, if you plan on upgrading to the new Monitor Audio Silver Series 7G speakers then either the T/5x or the T/7x will likely be the preferred choice due to their faster and more dynamic output. For more information on subwoofer pairing for this system, please write in to contactus@rel.net and we will be happy to assist further.

@@RELAcoustics Thanks very much. I ordered a T Zero Mk 3 this afternoon . Your customer service team rang me within a couple of hours to say it would not be shipped this afternoon which was very nice of them. The lady also answered a couple of questions. This is really excellent service when compared to other businesses these days. I’m looking forward to trying out as a pair, initially with my original 2017 T Zero before potentially ordering a matching Mk 3 and possibly selling on my Mk 1 - it’s still a good unit. My son also has one after he heard mine a couple of years ago.
My wife is very happy we are likely to head down this route rather than a formidable ‘pair of tombstones’ even if they were going to be white (MA silver 200 7G).
If it all works well I’ll look at a good ‘stereo only’ mid range amp to complement the NR1711. One that can then drive the front system of 2 Radius 90s and 2 T Zeros.
An Audiolab 8300, MF 3i or the Marantz 8006 are all options as they have power inputs from the AV’s preamps. Any thoughts on which amp combo is best for classical music?

Thank you for reaching out. The Tzero Mk.III subwoofer can perform very well with your Klipsch RP-600M speakers in a small listening room. With this amplifier, we recommend connecting the Tzero Mk.III using it's High Level input, and to connect red wire to the right channel positive output terminal, yellow wire to left channel positive, and the black wire to the ground screw located next to the output terminals on the amp's back panel.
