Nice review, Peter. For me, I found Nikka FTB to be quite the journey. The nose is subtle, and the first sip was not too exciting as well, but served to wake up the palate. Afterwards, it turned into quite an enjoyable and interesting ride, with the next sips getting better and better. The palate bounced between sweet, fruity, spicy, slightly bitter coffee, coating maltiness and a very long, warming finish - WOW! I even bought a 2nd bottle since I found the ride to be something I want to go on again and again. If I gave it a rating, for me it would be a 4.4 out of 5 or, using my favorite scale, a 90 out of a 100. Keep up the great reviews.
Thanks. Sounds like a winner for you. That's fantastic. I'm on the hunt for a bottle that I feel the same way you do about this one. My journey continues. Cheers!
Great review. My tasting notes for NFTB differ a bit but I think I had the same conclusion as you. Looking forward to your following japanese and rye reviews.
I am up to 10 rye whiskies to review. I am not a big fan of rye, but I'm looking forward to the challenge. Nikka From the Barrel has gone through a few changes with me in its flavor profile since I first opened it 6 months ago. I'm curious what notes you get from it.
@@whiskeyisajourney My tasting notes are:
Nose: Plum and caramel, with a small bit of ethanol
Palate: Citrus Shortbread cookies
Finish: Citrus Sour Caramel
with water I got some added briny notes
I'm sure if I came back to again later I'd get other notes.
Neat to read this little thread. It’s what I love about YT reviews, hearing how we all taste things just a little different!
I always keep a bottle of Hakushu 12 (the best balanced whisky in the world imo) and Yamazaki 12 in the cabinet. Tried this for the first time a couple weeks ago. As someone who began their whiskey journey with Scotch and only later flipped the script to bourbon, I gravitate towards high proof and barrel strength expressions as I find the higher the proof, the greater the flavor. This was no exception. It carries all the mouthfeel of a low BEP barrel strength whiskey - viscous and oily and tongue-coating. First and subsequent sips show its layers; it engages the entire palette. Nice, long finish. I’m guessing the chill filtering was meant to focus the profile on certain flavors. I’d score this between a 7.4-7.7.
I'm also a fan of higher proof bottles. I feel like they offer more of an experience on the nose, palate, and finish. Cheers!
Hi
Nikia from the barrel is a bennevis whiskey, it ranked a 94 points in whiskey advocate magazine, and it ranked high on Erik waites video, I love it myself, cheers brother !!!
Good information. Thanks!
I tried it, once, and I loved it.
I see it on the shelf in my area all the time, so when this bottle gets low I think I might pick up another bottle.
I always enjoy your reviews and often agree with your palate. This one however I differ on. The most prominent note I get on the nose and palate is butterscotch with some good complexity underneath that. This one is a “sip it” for me.
Okay. I went back to see if I could get butterscotch out of it. Thinking the power of suggestion would get me to that note. I can't find it. I went to the Glenfarclas 12 and found it. Then I went back to the Nikka...still nothing. I'll keep trying. 👍 Just proves the point that everyone has different pallets. I really like butterscotch notes. I hope to find it soon. Cheers.
My favourite whiskey i ever drunk and i say that as an irishman where whiskey was invented.
Nice! I am happy you enjoy it so much. Cheers!
Just saw this bottle at costco and watched ur video to see what u think about it haha. i know u said at 75 it was a lil pricey but my costco had it at 54$ is it worth the pick up?
At that price I think so. If you pick it up let me know what you think of it. Cheers!
@ I bought and thought it just lacked uniqueness to it kinda straightforward whiskey tastes and notes but not too expressive. For sure a really good sipper for how smooth it is
@@Ivansitoo straightforward is a good word for it.
I forget where, but I remember someone going on a deep dive into old articles about the whiskey and from what I remember, it came from the two main Nikka distilleries and a Nikka owned distillery outside of Japan (Scotland, if I remember correctly). So if they want to market it as "Japanese whiskey" they probably have to drop the 3rd distillery at least.
I heard the same thing about the Scottish distillery being part of the blend. We will see going forward how they label the bottle.
Another objective review. Thanks Peter 🥃. This Nikka is a very well constructed blended whisky that a whole lot of people enjoy.
I recently watched a review of this NFTB on TH-cam where the presenter seemed to take offense to it containing Single Malt from Scotland and still being referred to as "Japanese". Well, doesn't 90% of Scotch whisky referred to as "Product of Scotland" contain American Bourbon..??? For some people "Hypocrisy knows no bounds".
Looking forward to those Rye reviews.
Thanks. I'm looking forward to all the rye reviews as well. I think it's going to be my most challenging series to date.
I like it! If it was given to me blindly I wouldn’t know if it’s scotch or bourbon.
Rumor has it there is scotch in this.
Great review! I don't like Nikka's stuff. Acetone seemed to be the predominant aroma, and flavor. I found this interesting tidbit on their 'site: 'the product does not meet all the criteria of "Japanese whisky" defined by the Japan Spirits & Liqueur Makers Association.' 🤔
I think some of the whisky for the blend is coming from Scotland. I thought I read that somewhere. It's one of their sister distilleries.
This is the equivalent of 45 USD where I’m from (and we have a crazy high alcohol tax), not sure why there’s such a big price difference.
I can't make sense of prices. To me there is no rhyme or reason for the fluctuations.
I like Nikka FTB, especially for the price. Where I live, it goes for $30 to $35. Imho its nice for the price. Had worse for much more.
$30 is a fantastic price. Where do you live that it's $30? Cheers!
Just picked up for 50+ in PHX Costco
That's a great price, I wouldn't have passed that up.
74 dollars means there is alot of taxes involved. Its 599NOK = 57 dollars here in Norway and our tax system is crazy high. Weird.
I'm amazed how different every market is from one another. Thanks for checking in from Norway! Skal
@@whiskeyisajourney Skål! I'm actually having a little taste of Nikka from the barrel right now 😊
It’s even cheaper in Sweden for some reason, 499 SEK here (which is currently about 480 NOK).
Honest score
Thanks. OSWA's has it ranked higher, but I can only score it based on my experience.
@@whiskeyisajourney staying true to oneself is paramount
I've tasted it a couple of times and it didn't seem to have any characteristics that would make it worth more than 30 euros a bottle. I think the world will belong to Asia in the future so as long as I can drink Scotch whiskies why rush things?
I expected more from it and it left me wanting more from it. Oh well. Cheers!
I prefer nail polish remover. Tastes much better & has no added colour or flavour.
That's classic! 😂 Cheers!
