    Director’s Cut was definitely worth the small price of a coffee! Lots of extra content and some really interesting outcomes in the H2H for old vs new bottles.
    Mac is one of those TH-camrs that you can tell puts in a HEAP of work into making content that’s not only engaging and informative but entertaining as well. The quality is not reflective of the number of subscribers he has - so here’s hoping that the channel continues to grow the way it deserves!

    Great review Mac and one of the bottles I always keep in stock. It only becomes available here in Ontario, Canada occasionally (like 1-2x/yr) and when it does I usually buy a “6 pack” to keep me happy.

    Top review as usual and a top product. Hands down the best value for money whisky in Japan or anywhere I’d imagine. It’s longevity is testament to that. And a gorgeous little bottle you never want to bin.

    Cracking review Mac. This is quite simply a wonderful whisky. It show cases the art of blending which has developed in Japan since the 1920’s. Blending is what they learnt from Scotland because blending was what it was all about in Scotland at the time. From the Barrel remains the pinnacle of Japanese blending knowledge.
    Despite being 500ml, the bottle design is timeless. The question is, how much better would it be if it were not chill filtered and E150 polluted……?

    • @KanpaiPlanet
      @KanpaiPlanet  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed - so strange to chill-filter it above 46% ABV. Would love an NC NCF version too.

    Absolutely a cracking little whiskey that punches well above its weight, always had a bottle on my shelf when I was living over there (still have a bottle, just a bit more careful with how often I have a dram!)
    It'd be a shame if it ever disappeared, and agree that marketing it as a world whiskey would be a good way of adding transparency while also keeping it relevant when the new rules come in and people start looking for "true" Japanese whiskey

    20 litre barrel you say? Sweet merciful 😅
    One of my first ‘Japanese’ whiskies, and easily one of my favourites. Though I had no doubt you would, I’m glad you touched upon the lack of transparency about the components not being 100% Japanese.
    With that being said, this factor does not detract at all from it being a delicious whisky. As others have said, for the money, this stuff is hard to beat! Even as a blend, in terms of flavour it can compete with a lot of similarly priced single malts available today.
    I’ve tried this same whisky at a couple of different bars, definitely enjoyed it more the first time around so would be curious to know how they differed. I’ll be picking up a bottle no doubt. Definitely a fan of the design too - simple, aesthetically appealing and iconic.

    The marrying of blends is also quite common not just to improve the quality , huge batches of blends are made up 100,000l and go back into wood (neutral casks) just for storage to free up vat space. Then they bring it out of wood in smaller troughings as bottling orders come up. This helps with consistency as you have a supply of the same blend that can be bottled for years.

    Great video, Mac. I heard a lot of contradictory infos about this expression, included from some "famous shop I won't mention"...Some say it has a vast majority of grains in it (over 70 %), others the contrary, like you here, me I don't know, but you are right, Nikka is often picky to give away its recipes, but as you mentioned, we can feel there is content from their own local & overseas distilleries (while for me the Ben Nevis is more obvious in the Super Nikka), and I'll add, a lot of oak & spices suggesting hogsheads as you said, but also a lot of heavily charred or virgin oak casks, plus significant grain & comes across as relatively young for me. That said, I've seen quite batch variations over the years & I agree, more esters than before probably (I've been tasting this since 2005 or so). Yet it remains for me a strong value indeed & I know it is one of the best sellers here in France & for long the most sold Japanese whisky (not sure now with all these new companies). Kanpaï !

      Looks like we agree as usual Greg!
      All my info has been checked, triple checked and verified with many sources. If there is Ben Nevis in Super Nikka, it is more obvious because it isn't competing with all the other batches.

      In the 70s, when pre-empting a shift to metric, the standard fifth (of a gallon), which nearly equaled 750 ml, was decided as the standard for US bottlers.

    Here in Ontario Canada, it is 7,701.91JPY / $70CAD. About double what it is there and not always available. You didnt demonstrate the bottle pour which is the only draw back. :)

    I always wonder whether the short necks and wide bodies on various Japanese whiskey bottles has something to do with the drinking culture. The way you pour drinks to each other. The fat bottles are harder to hold with one hand and you really need to hold the glass to the opening as well. So it's easier if someone holds the glass and you hold the bottle with two hands.

      @KanpaiPlanet  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is an interesting theory indeed. In this case, that is not what Taku Sato was going for. Whisky typically is not in the centre of a table the way sake or shochu are. However, there could well be some influence of tokkuri into bottle design!

    Another great review as per usual. I actually disagree with your assessment as my own subjective taste gets far more of the nail polish remover/acetone to the point it dominates the other notes. That said I loved your breakdown into the history of the product and how/why it first hit the market. Would love to visit the bar next time I'm in Tokyo. 😀

      I hear you... and in some of the less umami-filled batches I've had I would agree with you that at times that note sticks out more than usual. For me it's not been enough to spoil my time with any of the bottles I've had, but as you rightly say, each to their own!

    my only complaint is the bottle, am I the only one having difficulty from pouring this bottle, not only is the bottle is hard to grab due to the corners then the worst offender is the short neck making it hard to pour without some drops missing the bottle...
