  • New Zealand's capital city is famous for the Wellington Fault that cuts right through its heart, and extends along the densely populated Hutt Valley. But there are many other active faults that together increase the earthquake hazard over the whole region.

Lived in Makara for about 20 years, now In Tararuas. Scrambled all over those outcrops as a teenager and saw the difference but now understand it. Thankyou. Very interesting.

😕 That's not entirely Wellingtons fault. The whole country isn't what it's cracked up to be really. 😉

A very comprehensive summary of active Wellington faults, and the role of seismology in understanding and mitigating impacts. I recognized the Pigeon Bush site from one of your previous videos! Thank you again for making these interesting and informative videos.

When I was climbing etc in scotland, I battled, for years, with the mountain names mostly because of the Gaelic...
I am glad, very very glad I didn't emigrate to NZ...those native names are real tongue manglers...
Incredible videos people...keep it up and good luck...

Damn this channel! I've got things to do, but there's always "just one more video" to watch. :)
A little more seriously, I don't usually binge watch TH-cam channels, but this is the kind of content I love.

Having been brought up in Wellington, I have now lived most of my life in Auckland. It is very different here geologically and although I am interested in earthquakes and have always been the focus of "drop, cover, hold" we Aucklanders still practice this every year. Yet one quarter of all New Zealanders (us) live on a thin crustal volcanic zone that has produced vents every few thousand years, Rangitoto being one that Maori can recall from their ancestors.
Would it be possible please, to discuss this in a video, what would be the signs of activity, where would it most likely happen, etc. I have seen a video of one in the harbour which would be explosive, but there are also signs of the Panmure Basin, an old crater, swelling up again. Is this possible and how will Aucklanders be warned of an impending eruption when the time comes (eg Civil Defence alarm) and can we prepare for such an event? What should that look like? Thanks!

Anything on the faults that are a few kilometres offshore running parallel to Porirua and the Kapiti Coast? Over the last year i've noticed more quake activity there. Is it something people on the coast should be concerned about?

I am guessing the 2 , 4.5 (?) Earth quakes Wellngton regions had in the last couple of weeks happened prior to this being made
Which fault ruptured in the Hutt Valley - the 1st of the 2 , and which of the marine faults moved , north of the boulder bank , west of Wellington , as both of these affected other faults around Wellington , to some degree or other .

I've known for years about the fault on which the SH1 / SH2 is built. Since this is such a well known fault, what possessed the authorities to build the only transport corridor into the city directly atop this fault? Someone patently did not do their homework, and now the country is at huge risk of its capital being completely cut off of surface access! Is thee a fault running through, next to, or across the Wellington airport?

    • @OutThereLearning
      @OutThereLearning  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you for your comment. The fear is not so useful, but if awareness encourages you to get well prepared for an earthquake that is a positive thing.

If you live in a country that has, frequent quakes. You don't worry too much.

Quake in 1855 sent half the land drop many feet.

By briefly looking at the map, there is a fault running North/South down the centre of Wellington Airport.
That could be interesting “one day”!🛬

Yes, there is one close by, one of the many smaller faults in the region
