Ketamine Explained, The Next Big Antidepressant | The War on Drugs

  • For half a century, prohibition has been causing chaos and misery worldwide. Any attempt to shut down the drugs trade invariably sets off a chain of events that just makes things worse, leaving a trail of death, illness, violence, slavery, addiction, crime and inequality across the globe. The War On Drugs is a war in which everyone loses - except, in a weird kind of way, the drugs themselves.
It may lack the glamorous associations of cocaine and the hedonistic kudos of ecstasy, but ravers, doctors and therapists worldwide are united in their love for ketamine. The trippy anaesthetic has thrived despite global attempts to ban it and has overcome PR damage caused by teenage incontinence and knocked-out horses. Since it was first used by US field surgeons in the Vietnam War, the drug has quietly been winning battles in the War On Drugs across the planet, and today is adored by club kids zoning out at afterparties and pioneering psychotherapists alike.

The SSRI slavery will never stop.
Therapists want you complacent, not happy, not active and constructive.
They'd rather make you dead inside, preventing you from killing yourself (ironic I know) than risking making you ecstatic and you doing something stupid.

This bro same for me...at 42 I was getting finally ready to throw in the towel. Been on opiates since 19 from my military service to hardly any effect the anxiety and depression meds have rarely helped. Now with age things are worsening while I sit silently in my own nightmares unable to sleep withing in pain wish for death. I find no happiness in anything I love. Until 2 weeks ago when I had my first ketamine infusion. It's been a game changer but it hasnt lasted long but it gave me a break showed me I can still love things and myself. Has allowed me to sleep without nightmares. Medical science needs to know this medicine be it for pain or for mental health is the holy grail especially once its mastered. You need to have a good environment around you to take advantage of the benefits while they are in effect. Mine showed me my anxiety to new situations didn’t mean danger. The K gave me that small window of 4-6 weeks to tap into me again, it’s been 7 months since a treatment, but I’m thriving. Having been a member of The Cleveland Clinic’s Ketamine study around this time in 2018 (in an attempt to try to treat my OCD), I found that Ketamine is an extremely innocuous drug that when taken responsibly, can really help those suffering from mental illness.
Unfortunately for me, I was not one of the people it helped a ton. At its climax, I at most felt mildly tipsy.
I really don’t see any downside to this drug. I was always cleared to drive myself home right afterward so, technically with my current weight and height, I could theoretically get a DUI for having single beer. But after an hour of Ketamine, I was good to go.
If more medication like this were legal, I do not see people like myself needing to self-medicate as much with actual dangerously hard and fatal drugs or alcohol by any means.

Ket has wonderfully therapeutic qualities. Even though it’s an anesthetic, micro dosing helps you disarm from social situations you may initially find uncomfortable. One thing: watching somebody go through a k-hole is a little freaky. If you use it recreationally be careful and don’t mix it with other substances.

I've used ketamine (very small doses) just for the sole reason of trying to get out of a depressed state. It helped me more than all the other drugs that were ever prescribed to me, and it does so instantly. It's not a miracle that's going to fix your depression just like that. But it snapped me out of that lifeless feeling and made me remember what it's like to feel a bit of joy. It's not permanent, but it can give you a jump start and a different outlook on things, and hopefully find ways to get better.

For chronic pain it's amazing. After three brain surgeries and a failed back procedure within a year, I was starting to get ketamine infusions to leave the hospital. This was after they tried fentanyl, morphine, dilated.
Thankfully for chronic pain there are centers with ketamine infusions as an option for pain therapy outside of the hospitals, but they're very expensive. If those were more affordable and talked about, I think a lot of people could get off pain pills and that would be beautiful.

This experience gave me a lot of confidence about my self and my body. A bunch of bad thought / behavior patterns were broken. One of these was pretty bad OCD that made me wash my hands a lot. It gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip: Everything is alright. The main reason for the trip was my severe depression and it definitely helped me (although it's not gone). Before all I could do was lay in bed. I’d lived with chronic depression and depressive anxiety my entire life. The first time I attempted suicide was age 7, and daily suicidal ideation was part of my entire life. In 2021, I wound up in a psychiatric unit after another suicide attempt. SSRIs and talk therapy had been insufficient. My psychiatrist recommended ECT or ketamine treatment. I did 6 infusions at a clinic over the course of two weeks. My life ever since has been more tranquil and manageable than I’ve ever known, my friends find me easy to be around, and I don’t obsess or catastrophize anymore. Ketamine is life saving. Those 6 sessions two years ago made me a different person in so many healthy ways.

I was quite well-connected with harm reduction groups when I started dabbling with ket so I was fairly well-informed compared to many regulars.
I had some incredibly positive effects from my first two or three small sessions of it but then I had some insidious post-use depression which absolutely destroyed all mental health progress it had provided me with.
It was like the post-MDMA mid-week dumps, but slower and harder to recognise, plus seemingly far more aggressive depression than anything I’d had before.

I have worked in private security 15 years. In my experience people on ket tend to be difficult to deal with. (non medicinal, non controlled dosage etc) I have seen everything from simply passing out to extreme violence. One guy took a dose in the bathroom then walked into a club delusional and attacked several people with a glass bottle.
While i can appreciate its use medicinally, like the vast majority of drugs careful moderation is the key. Too much of anything is bad, and with ket the dosage difference between a good time and the worst night of your life seems to be very small.

I tried it recreationally and the next day felt amazing. I called it my ketamine reset. Then it was such a profound mood lift I researched to find all the antidepressant properties. It's truly amazing medicine.

Microdosing ketamine every few days as a sublingual tablet has absolutely changed my life. I have been on anti-depressants since I was 12 (17-18 years) and found some relief, but nothing that brought me any kind of real stability. With a number of attempts to end my life in my past, the ideations plagued me daily and the simple act of waking up in the morning was a battle. Since adding ketamine to my medication routine I feel a relief I could have only dreamed of prior. While I can't credit ketamine with all my success as I have also done intensive therapy, I don't know that I would be typing this from my own apartment pursuing a life I actually look forward to without it. I can finally see myself and the world around me without the shadow of harmful ideations plaguing me. I hope more research and development are done regarding ketamine, I wouldn't wish the chains of major depression on anyone.
(I should note that I have never really been "high" from it as my dose is fairly mild and I take it before I fall asleep, so I can't speak to any of the harmful side effects that were only briefly touched on.)
