      Some guys don't take rejection very well......
      some also harbor grudges for an excessively long time.
      In all seriousness though, the marriage proposal was purely a political move in order to get control of England. The invasion of the Spanish Armada was because 30 years later he still wanted to get control of England. So yeah, even though one didn't immediatley follow the other, they did have the same motive at the root.

      @@snowangelnc That is where you are mistaken, it was not because he wanted to gain control of England, In fact he was completely reluctant to attack, it was only after reports had reached Philip of Elizabeth persecuting Catholics, and Elizabeth sending pirates into Spanish territory that Philip eventually declared war upon Elizabeth.

      You're right. The actress that played Mary wasn't ugly. That said, from the portraits I've seen of Mary, she wasn't ugly. What I read was that the ravages of a difficult life had taken a toll on her. She had suffered a lot because of Anne Boleyn, her parent's divorce and her father's rejection of her. She was, also, in constant fear of death. Poor Mary. She had formerly been the apple of her father's eye.

    • @holabuenas7200
      @holabuenas7200 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Just Getting By not really. It was one of the nations who helped to overthrow the Spanish rule. France, the United Provinces and The Ottoman Empire were the main nations that fought against Spain. England did it by supporting revolts and rebel forces that opposed the Crown, such as, for example, the Dutch. The main problem for Spain that came from England was pirates, not much more. The useless rulers, the politics, internal revolts and national problems were the main declive for the Spanish Crown, as well as the simultaneously multiple enemies that fought against the empire, having the country about 18 years of absolute peace in the entire 16th century. Spain, throughout it's history, has won about more than the 65% of the wars that has participated in, and casually, the country with it has fought the most is England, historically speaking, winning about 70% of the times. These statistics do exist if you do search for them. In conclusion, England was just a minor factor inside Spain's recession of power.

    • @holabuenas7200
      @holabuenas7200 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Just Getting By I beg you pardon, I wrote this late at night, and I did mess up statistics. I have taken into account the draws during these wars, as well as nuclear results. In fact, the real percentage does not pass 45%. I do agree that in the Tudor era (1485-1603) England was a great power, I would never deny that. You state correctly everything regarding the intervention of England during the Spanish Succession war, and I am glad to see that you know what you are taking about. We may agree that a simple response like "by England" can lead to confusion. If it is indeed true that you ment that England was one of the many factors that resulted in the decline of the empire. I once more apologize for that insultingly wrong number.

      @@holabuenas7200 personally i always saw tudor england as being very close to a super power in terms of potential.
      Unfortunately because of the personality of the tudor dynasty the country could never fufil that potential since there were so many rebellions stopping any true pusb for dominance (granted alot of these were under the rule of henry 8 but elizabeth had her share)
      Not to mention the religious upheaval of henry making the country protestant, then mary reversing it and then elizabeth playing a reverse card again. By the end no one was sure what religion was going to be official causing high levels of public strife.
      Then you also have to remember that by Elizabeth's time england was full of poverty and starvation meaning production would have been low as well as support for a costly series of wars
      Its because the navy wouldnt be able to operate fully that we hired privateers to raid anything not flying the english flag
      In short, we could have been a one of the strongest but had so many domestic issues it wouldnt be feesable until a couple monarchs later when we began to really profit from our colonies

    It was mainly her age that turned off Philip. She was 38 and he was 26. 38 was considered old for a bride at that time, and while it's true she was no longer as beautiful as when she was younger, her portraits as queen certainly don't show an ugly woman, in fact, I think she remained attractive even as she grew older, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. The Venetian ambassador at the time described her as plain, but not unattractive.

    The reason I like this is because this really shows how life was do very hard for Mary. Also there is a pattern between Catherine of Aragon: Anne Boleyn and Mary:Elizabeth
    Catherine lost the love of Henry to Anne and Mary lost the love of Phillip to Elizabeth. True facts!!
    Furthermore Mary got a rare disease that gave her all the symptoms of being pregnant when she wasn't. Thus happened twice.

Which is honestly the only thing I respect Charles V for doing coz when they were betrothed she was like 8 and he was already like mid twenties so... yeah, well done Charles V for having the decency to not marry a literal child when you were in your late 30s to early 40s.

    Philip liked to keep it in the family. Mary was technically his first cousin, and after Elizabeth rejected him, he went on to marry his niece, Anna of Austria.

    She WAS beautiful when she was younger. But years of heart ache, fear, and stress took a toll on her looks. Like how her mother Katherine of Aragon went into early menopause after years of failed pregnancies and stillbirths.....

    During that era Spain (the Spanish Empire) was the most powerfull coutry in the world, but England was not second, not even near it. There were too The Holy Roman Empire and France. England had then only perhaps second strongest navy after Spain

    Thing is the English laid down legislation meaning Philip couldn’t
    A- inherit the throne
    B- have any of the power that came with the title of King
    C- place any Spanish councillors in government.
    So the only power he actually gained was a theoretical alliance and the power to convince Mary to go to war. Which he did, because she was a loved up weakling

      @@cerysfalmai8644 I haven’t but I noticed that children in America often find history boring so a show like this might help spark an interest. If they see that learning it can be fun and memorable
