Can you be saved but not walk in the Spirit? Can you accept/believe in Christ and at some point later choose to reject Him/your belief in Him and no longer be saved?

Faith is a gift in the sense that food is a gift. It is a gift, available for all to pick up. My wife is also a gift from God, but I still had to woo and marry her.

Salvation is the gift, and we access it by faith.
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
      - Ephesians 2:8-10
If you look at the Greek, the gift here is neuter, meaning that it refers to the whole clause ("by grace you have been saved through faith"). The NASB95 has a footnote saying "i.e. that salvation".
So God showed us grace (unmerited favor) in that (despite the fact that by our works we would rightly be condemned) He made it so that whoever has faith in (or trusts in) Christ will be saved.
But it's not as though works are unimportant as you can see in verse 10. It's just that they don't have any effect on our salvation. Instead, our salvation has an effect on our works.
Basically, works righteousness is putting the cart before the horse. The problem isn't that there is a cart, but that you're trying to get the cart to pull the horse.
Suppose a man cheats on his wife and his wife finds out. He gets home before she does and does the dishes, sweeps the floor, and meets her at the door with a bouquet of flowers and acts like nothing happens. Will his wife accept that or slap him in the face?
On the other hand, another man cheats on his wife, his wife finds out, and he realizes what he's done. He goes immediately to his wife and asks for her forgiveness, even though he doesn't deserve it. His wife sees that he's genuine and accepts his apology, taking the burden for his actions upon herself.
The second man, after being reconciled to his wife, gets home before she does and washes the dishes, sweeps the floor, and meets her at the door with a bouquet of flowers. Will she accept the flowers? Of course, because they have already been reconciled, and he's doing it out of love, not to win her favor.
