I think one thing that a lot of people don’t realize, which compounded this state of mind he started to get into before he quit, was that his best friend Bill had died in a tragic accident in that time period. They lived together as roommates and played music together. Bill played an upright bass and was something of a virtuoso himself, and they had spoken about starting they’re own little weird musical project. Before they could ever make that happen Bill tragically died in an auto accident. The song Smile from the Streets you Hold is written about him.
Thanks for sharing. I always wondered what happened to Bill because John woukd mention him so frequently from 89 to 91. How do you know Bill died in a car accident? I always wondered what he thought of John dropping out of the band and getting on drugs
@@WhiteChocolate74 hey no problem! I have read and watched so many interviews and it’s hard to track down where, but I know it was mentioned very briefly somewhere in one of those. I can’t remember if Anthony mentioned it in “Scar Tissue” somewhere (I’m thinking maybe it was mentioned in there), but for sure, %100, he talked about it before he played Smile From the Streets you Hold at one of his solo live shows, I think La Scene in Paris 2001, and mentioned how the song was dedicated to Bill and was very emotional to him. Despite him having to restart the song a couple times it was such an amazing live performance of that song. And he plays the part that was dubbed over originally on the recordings. He said he felt that part of the song was too personal and dubbed over it for the album.
@@WhiteChocolate74 It wasn't Bill. I don't think he was a musician. It was a guy named Rob Hayes. They met when John was 15 or 16 when they enrolled in the guitar institute. And their weird avant-punk project was called the Three Amoebas. Stephen Perkins of Jane's Addiction and Dick Rude (on various found objects as percussion) were also members. Yes, the guy graduated as a sophomore.

Seeing John Frusciante in this video is painful on an almost physical level. The only thing that struck me more than John's terrible mental and physical condition was his incredibly sparkling chemistry with Flea.

Pretty impressive. My point is the fourth dimension is really the separate reality and warriorship. Sometimes people act like balls and bounce against other ones. The ticket is -- did you know that would happen?
It was a drink that JOHNNY DEPP supposedly concocted and handed it to John to pass to Phoenix. Bc apparently all of them were drinking that shit. They were just too fucked up themselves and uneducated to think about the strength of the drink or to look out after him after drinking it. River wasn’t stupid, he knew that they weren’t just giving him a regular drink of plain whisky. But he didn’t know exactly what was all in it and how much was in it, sadly. The only reason he went inside of the viper room that night was to score more drugs and jam with Johnny Depp/Flea. He was already high on something before going inside from what his girlfriend said. He shouldn’t have been so careless but he was broken at that time and still very young and naive, as well as Depp, John, and his other close friends were. They were all so immature, too self absorbed, and clueless about what anyone else was going through or getting high on. They were all just addicts or drug lovers and did whatever they could to escape and feel good. You have to hold everyone accountable for what Happened, even river and his girlfriend. You can’t just point your finger to one person 🤦♂️
Incredibly telling that he gives no credit to Chad or anthony for their part in creating blood sugar sex magic. Sure he was in a dark place at the time but it sure seems intentional.
Yeah idk I'm sure he didn't mean it but throughout the interview it sounds like he really despises Anthony not so much Chad but I'm sure he would think differently now
To be fair, did you ever watch the doc of them recording bssm? John worked his ass off, and you could see him getting frustrated at times that the others weren't listening or weren't focusing as much as he was. He went celibate and went through a weird phase of extreme dedication to the album, and to be, again, fair, he's highly responsible for all the best parts of the album. There wouldn't be a bssm without him, or it wouldnt have been nearly as successful. You also hear him at the end sort of not knowing what to do now that he's dedicated so much time to this thing and now he has to go back out into the world. He's not happy about it. The whole doc is really interesting, you can see the dynamics of the band in those earlier days. I love them all, but John, along with Flea, carry the band.
And I wish people would stop giving him any kind of credit for the garbage solo albums he put out during his drug days. None of it is good. It's not avant garde. It's just a sick sick man rambling and screaming and it should never have even seen the light of day.
I think there's a few good songs on their not my go to albums but some aren't of the songs aren't bad Like mascara or been insane on niandra lades but not nearly as good as his 2000s albums
