  • The best buck to doe ratio to find on your deer hunting land may surprise you. Keep in mind that if you see a large number of does for every buck, there is likely someone else in the neighborhood experiencing the opposite. you have a choice for what buck:doe ratio that you find, by managing your hunt and habitat well. If you have a small deer hunting parcel and want to see a lot more bucks this deer hunting season, then you need to make sure to follow these buck to doe ratio improvement strategies.

    Hey Jeff ! I definitely have too many doe on my property ! My food plots ate to the ground is the proof of that ! Im only planting fall plots. One is an Acre , 1/2 acre and 1/4 acre. And the rest is hay fields woods and cover. I've always had lot of doe even before my food plot plan. Any feed back would be great! Thank you so much !

    Normally on out property we have 4:1 does to bucks. This year and I still haven't figured it out why but our ratio switched to 4:1 bucks to does. We haven't done anything different this year either

    I'm the guy in the middle with a 20, west is big time hunters with many plots, to the east is a group of older hunters who have time to "live" in their blinds, north is state land, a large area. Tried to bait, food plots, ect. but really had no effect, I am just a wide spot in the road on the way someplace else. so---------- made a shooting blind on south side of property with a nice wide shooting lane all the way to n. lot line about 800 yds. Added your rub and a waterhole at about 300 yds. planted a little rye in it. bought a 7mm mag. and now I sit in a heated blind and shoot a 8 pt. or bigger every year. used to be mad about not being able to compete, but you have confirmed my method of let the other guy do the heavy lifting. People on the state land chase them around all day, so I hunt all day, easy to do warm and dry. Just tune up your long shot skills before you do this, a deer is not very big at 300 yds. even with a strong scope

    Very good information Jeff. Always look for your latest post in the AM. Read all the books, putting in the work for plots this fall which allow for bedding and looking forward to what happens after. Thanks

    Could you go over food plot placement for different situations? It is the only topic I find hard to see clarity of what you recommend. Today, you mentioned having food plots on one side. Before you mentioned putting cover on the outside and food plots in the middle if you have neighbors who hunt. Once you mentioned putting food plots on the outside next to a golf cart. I know there won’t be a single rule but was wondering if you might have a top 5 or 10 rule set to cover this that can be the used to make decisions on food plot placement.

    • @weswilson3758
      @weswilson3758 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I have understood from channel is that he puts food plots that are well screened from the neighbors parallel to his borders to keep the deer moving parallel to the borders so they don’t go onto other property a high percentage of the time.

    • @williamschablowsky5764
      @williamschablowsky5764 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wes Wilson thanks, that is a good point. Still I wonder if there are more points that could be added in if certain situations occur. Like is there a certain reason to have all food plots to one side. I think you pointed out rule number one, but maybe a full list with other rules for going through situations.

    • @williamschablowsky5764
      @williamschablowsky5764 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was actually planning my food plots in how you mentioned to have deer move parallel with the borders, but the food plots would be on both sides. Which made me wonder about other recommendations like having them all on one side.

    • @weswilson3758
      @weswilson3758 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes if you have all food plots to one side that leaves the rest of your property for bedding cover and other habitat features. If you have a large enough parcel than I’m sure it wouldn’t matter if you had food plots on both sides. I know I’m not Mr. Sturgis himself, this is just how I understand his videos on the topic. I would look up the concept that he originated and that is depth of cover, he has videos on the subject too. Good luck this year William!

    Great video Jeff. Thank you for pressing on with this "Great Escape" into wildlife habitat improvement moments. For many us, the state of the nation and other stressors is becoming overwhelming, your insight, though a habitat managers eyes, gives us an escape to our 'other lives', lets our minds go to our lands where we work hard and play harder. Do you consider rye planted the previous fall to be summer doe food? They hit it hard in the Spring, but typically it will grow tall before the Fall.

    Thanks for the great content Jeff. I’m completely new to hunting, so I’m still at the learning phase. I hope to someday apply what you teach on my family’s land. We’re lucky enough to own a 35 acre parcel in northern Wisconsin that’s had minimal hunting pressure on it. It has a lot of potential and at least I can start developing the land while I actually learn to hunt. Any other resources for new hunters would be greatly appreciated from anyone who reads this. I’m an eager student!

    Great info. I see about 4 to 1 ratio. I plant soybeans and corn in summer and then fall plots in the corners for bow and gun hunting. Not a ton of ag around me (hunt in n central Wisconsin). I know you advise against Summer food, but we are trying to build herd. Had fun seasons where we saw 0 deer. Considering switch grass for next year instead of beans.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mark...thank you! Actually too...I advise to plant Summer food all the time and always have, when you need to build a herd 😉 One if the main reasons too. When you have too many deer, the first step is to cut the Summer food...
      Hunting pressure is also a huge culprit too in most cases....but definitely, always plant food...like I have said for roughly 20 years...if you need to build a herd. I was given the 2004 deer manager of the year award from the QDMA, for publishing my summer food plot herd building program ☺️
      Good luck on growing the deer numbers!

    Very good video!
    Your drawing with the river got me thinking.
    I have always wondered how much a river influences deer movement. How wide or deep does it need to be to reduce deer crossing? Will bucks cross more readily than does? Are they less likely to get wet when cold out?

    May be a dumb question Jeff but literally closing on a purchase of 160 parcel 95 acres young maples ash some hemlocks 10 acres of low sage up top and cedars 5 acres of two ponds in middle and 50 tillable ground. Whats would be your first move wait a year see what you have for deer and movement then make the approach or start your own creation of movement with the food this summer for fall and winter plots? Or what book would be a good starting point? Thanks Jeff!

    In the southeast when you are surrounded by pine forests, will food plots (approx 8 acres total between 5 plots) on 100 acres with mixed hardwoods attract too many does when there is a good deer population?

  • @brendonstreeter368
    @brendonstreeter368 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    what if you maybe see 1-2doe with fawns during the summer and fall and countless different bucks? 97 acres total with 30 of it being AG with another 60 acres of AG next door.

    i just got my property in October shot 2 doe a nice buck without getting chance scout or know the ground. my house sits in the woods quater mile back total wood parcel is 400 acres both east and west open to big ag fields over 100 acres each the sides them connect to ether 100-200 acres of woods behind the woods opens to 60 acre ag field . infront my drive way across road opens up to 350 acre field go left and right is 500 acre wood lot.. with 3 mile radius its total 5 hunters. im only hunter on my side. i got 4 acres food plots that maxim i can do i get groups 20-30 deer daily come through which i have great doe buck ratio but my fear is my food plot will get over ran when the farmers harvest whats my best food plot options really. i wanted do peas and turnips but i fear itll be destroyed quick. there wasnt a day i sat where i seen less 15 deer that was before i cut food plots put corn on. i average 8000 pictures of week going through 350 lbs of corn i dont have alot varmints

    Love your videos Jeff, was just wondering what a person can do if they have a ton of ag with pockets of woods. Unfortunately I can't replace the ag because it is needed to run the farm. Is there any way that I can improve my land without removing any ag land?

  • @ryanhill7115
    @ryanhill7115 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    How much of this philosophy can transfer over to areas that have little to no ag? We have 500 acres in South Central Missouri with only Hay fields on neighboring properties. We plant ~12 acres of Soybeans + fall/winter crops into them late summer. Is that still a failing strategy?

      Absolutely not. Too many bucks...no bucks on the land during the daylight. That's the old way if thinking and why there are lands with more bucks than does...and a lot of lands with a lot more does than bucks.

    • @jimf1964
      @jimf1964 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whitetail Habitat Solutions You need to spend a couple more seconds reading comments before answering. It was clearly a joke about bucks getting plenty of "action"
      It since you're answering, you seem to be implying that the land can't be used for other purposes, so as to not disturb the bucks, but would that just be during the rut, or you need land that is pretty much left alone all year? I don't know many people who can have a lot of land and not at least log it a little

      I too have a "son" that came late to the party, he really had no idea how to hunt. The biggest thing was his choice of shots, far, running, ect. Well, that lasted one day with the rest of us. Simple---- My land, my way, and give him the list of " NEVER @#$%$&** AGAIN" Now if he wants to be a part of all of it, he will go along and get along, If he doesn't know how, put someone with them in the blind until they get with the program, 100% in or out. no room in the hunting woods for someone that hunts cause he has nothing better to do, and no consideration for the other hunters in his group
