  • The two Slovak double-unit electric locomotives “Old Twins” 125-802 and -801 and 125-819 and -820 drive a freight train with empty open wagons on the broad gauge track in the direction of Uzhhorod (Ukraine). The train passes Kalša stop on the Košice - Chop (Ukraine) line, which is laid out in European standard gauge. I intentionally let the locomotive drive into the picture from behind, because looking to the west, the locomotive would approach in the late afternoon in total backlight.
Kalša is located at the two-track, electrified main railway line Košice - Chop (Ukraine). From Čierna nad Tisou border station to Chop, the line consists of the European track gauge as well as the Russian track gauge of 1,520 millimeters. Directly north of the platform (in the left of the picture behind the fence) takes course the broad gauge line Uzhhorod - Košice. This single-track railway line is used to transport iron ore from the Ukraine to the steelworks of U. S. Steel Košice in Haniska, southwest of Košice.
