I think it’s because - being English - he knows what the Henley Regatta is like. It’s probably quite difficult for him to break his british sensibilities around people who are just trying to enjoy the races.

I used to watch Ali G well before he was a big thing (I was studying in UK when he first emerged) and my favourite was always Borat. And this has always been one of my favourite Borat sequences ever. He's so funny in this and I love his boat racing commentary :) And he shows up the stuffiness of the toff crowd wonderfully :)

You can really see he has not "perfected" the charakter as much as in Borat. He even does the Ali G hand gesture in the beginning. The mannerism and voice is so much different in Borat!
