Part of the reason Fromsoft trailers work is that, despite technically depicting backstory, the characters shown are usually the bosses you find in the game.
The story trailer for shadow of the erdtree had me gasping and shocked at its lore revelations. It worked tremendously well for me! They just know their audience and play to it extremely well. I also think the experience of piecing together the lore from that trailer is more relatable to the experience of narrative in Elden ring than a more direct story explanation would be.
I believe it! That’s the experience they’ve set up for their fans, but all other games are not in the same position. So I think they should be super hesitant to copy trailers like that.
when I made my first game I made every mistake you can think of, including this one. Your insight is highly appreciated - at the end of the year I'll need to make a new reveal trailer for my current project.
My main takeaway from this video is that story trailers should include gameplay. Alternatively, I think it would be a good practice to have a gameplay trailer accompany a story trailer.
Haha yes 100%! Supergiant Games' motion graphics/VFX artist is AMAZING 😱 But as long as the visual design of the title cards fits then the trailer is in good shape.
The people who say they will play any game as long as there's good story will probably change their saying if the next From Soft is indeed a match 3 lmao
I think story trailers can also work well if your story, setting, and visuals are just REALLY interesting, like Death Stranding which started out with dead sea animals along the beach and an invisible being creating hand prints in the sand then we see Normal Reedus naked and hand prints appearing all over his body then a baby in his mouth lol. Kojimas storys and settings can be so unique and visually captivating that you really can't take your eyes off it.

Yup! People who are familiar with their games can get excited at the thought of fighting the characters 😄

I hope it'll be easier going when the time comes!
@@DerekLieu thanks to your advice I'm definitely more confident. The most important gameplay will start from second zero on.
Another straightforward, brutally honest and useful set of advice. Thanks for sharing your expertise you're the trailer king!

You got it 👍🏼
And, as an aside... Why the hell wasn't the Elden Ring story trailer the opening cinematic of the game??
Huh, no clue! 🤷🏻♂️
With title cards, it helps so much if they look sick! See Hades and Hades II trailers

Fromsoft trailers work because we can trust VaatiVidya to explain them to us
Hahahahahahhaha 😂
Kate Willaert sent me this way after she suggested this video on Insert Credit.
Super cool! I hope you enjoyed the video ^_^
What do you think about the dying light 1 trailer? It isnt exactly a "lore" trailer but it does connect to to the backstory of an important character
Which one? When I search I see at least 4 trailers.

Yeah, those are good examples of story trailers which show what happens in the game while you’re playing.
This is so wonderfully broken down and helpful. Wow!
Thank you!
oh...i thought you are a cinema channel🤔but still good👍🏻
@@AlejanderLong I’m a trailer editing channel that’s mostly about games, but I also do movie stuff VERY occasionally.
An Elden Ring RTS sounds absolutely incredible
Haha I'm sure someone could think of something interesting 😂
Damn it, I want to watch LOTR now
Hahaha, do it.
