- Cafe Madras, another institution on Bhaudaji Road serves authentic South Indian food in Matunga. The aroma of filter coffee can be felt even outside the eatery. Inside, it is always full with enthusiastic locals who have come down to devour their favourite dish and even those who have come a long way just to enjoy their favourite food filled with nostalgia. We tried a lot of authentic South Indian dishes which had their own taste and flavour. Paan Poli is a rare dish to be found in restaurants, one that came enwrapped in a banana leaf and was a sweet made of rice, banana, jackfruit and jaggery. I stayed in Matunga for 26-27 years. In Matunga there are lots of south Indian hotel.Rama Nayak, Ram Ashray, Apsara, Sharda Bhavan,Arya Bhavan,Anand Bhavan,Manis Idali, Durga Parmeshwari etc.

I ask because it seems to me that you review only eateries that serve food fit for vegetarians.
I prefer eating non veg food sometimes but homemade. I have shot a few restaurants serving non veg food but mostly I have veg food only when I am out.

I raised this point because there seems to be a deep misconception among non-southern Indians, that the cuisine of southern India is almost entirely-if not completely-made up of vegetarian food.
*There is a very wide variety meat-based dishes in southern Indian cuisine...* dishes (and cuisines) that many persons are blissfully unaware of!
I would say that the lumping together of the diverse cuisine of the different states/regions of southern India (under the nomenclature 'South Indian cuisine') is itself an injustice of sorts... especially when taking into account the fact that when one considers the cuisine of regions such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, the individual cuisines are identified individually by name-Maharashtrian food, Gujarati thali, Rajasthani cuisine-and not by a collective term like 'Western Indian cuisine'.

Very very tasty food,,, I had been going there in 1979 to 1983 .. Rasam wada,, Onion Uttapa and Mysore Masala were our Favorites...

Kya baat hai Alka, maza aa gaya. Yummyyy food. Actually pesarattu is famous in Andhra. Tamilians thoda alag tarike se banate hain and it's called adai.
Woh sweet aapne jo last mein khaya, it's called elai adai. Elai matlab pattha (leaf). Filling can be of nariyal or fanas (jackfruit). Summer mein zyada banta hai because it's jackfruit season. Great video thanks so much

My husband used to literally search for it in every restaurant and every city that we have visited in South India as he has childhood memories of having this as prasad in Swami Chinmayand Ashram at Powai and we found it here in Cafe Madras. I don't know why they named it Madras cafe because they have ruined the name and fame of Tamil cuisine.
By the way the price is too exorbitant. Not worth at all.
