Let's fix a melted GM Cluster!

- This cluster is from a low mile 2003 Silverado HD 6.0. Interior fire was started at the headlight switch location and was put out quickly.
Sometimes you just have to do the 'ol Louis Rossmann to get things working right.
I would have been heading to a junk yard for another one. I never would have thought anything would be salvaged. Awesome job.

Great job, Jeff, love watching you work Your right he got off easy , I don't know what the clusters cost but it probably a lot more than your services. Back in the 80's , did repair of smt's on ceramic substrate for naval radar, things have come a long way. Thanks , keep up the good work stay safe and enjoy the ride.
Thank you. Yes repair service is quite a bit cheaper than a replacement. Since this truck is a 2500 they cost more, plus no refurbishment center would take a melted cluster in as a core. So it probably would have cost him $500+ for a remanufactured programmed unit without a core return credit.
Smoke is corrosive. Learned that from a house fire my mom had that caused metal parts on furniture that was not damaged but was covered with smoke to rust.
Great videos. I am a handyman who often takes on projects that even though I have never done I am able to figure out how to fix. I have an 03 suburban that I bought the Amazon kit for I tried not going with the cheapest but not sure if I succeeded in that. I have been very hesitant in doing my cluster (owned the truck and kit almost 3 years now). I now have no power to my cluster so going to have to step up and either attempt to fix myself or pay someone, which is probably what I should do but I also want to learn how to do this myself... looks like either way you will be getting lots of view time from me...lol

WOW! You are great! if It were my truck, I'd think that was toast and I'm sure no one else would even touch it. I don't know if you remember me but about a year ago I sent you my HVAC digital climate controls to my 06 Yukon for you to replace the back lights. Works great I sent it all the way from California and the price was very reasonable! Thanks for a job well done!

That was cool, thanks for sharing! About 20 yrs ago I had a display that flickered, looked close a found cracks in the joints on a chip, quick heat to melt them closed, worked!

You should totally get an ultrasonic cleaner like Louis has, it seems like it really works. Should help with the initial board cleaning. Great video as always!
The thing is, clusters don't get spilled on and peed on like laptops. Liquid and fire damage is rare.

Great video Jeff. I've actually done a couple fire damaged cluster rebuilds before. The oxidation on the SMD components caused by the fire made it notably harder to rework the common failure points. But I must say, mine were no where near as bad as yours. I didn't see any water damaged components in the ones I've repaired.

I have an 06 Silverado I bought at auction. Cluster works fine except no check engine light. Where do I find the correct LED if it were removed? I haven’t pulled it yet to see what’s going on because I wanted to have all parts and tools ready before I took it apart. Thanks.
You'll need a 3528 SMD orange. Unless it's just covered up with a peice of tape.

The truth is, if you don't have/can't get replacement stepper motors, you can easily take them apart and lubricate them(just make sure you're using something almost liquid lubricant, otherwise they won't work either). I had to repair my servos, because my speed and revolution gauge both had a stiff pont( after 18 years of use) where they tend to get stuck for the next pothole.
These servos(at least in my car) look almost the same as tipical chinese alarmcloks from the inside.

Can you suggest where to check on my 02 Sierra cluster? PRNDL/ODO display only illuminates when key is turned to accessory position. Red battery in message center is constantly on but alternator is putting out 15v to battery running. Fuel gauge is pegged E all the time. Not sure if these are 3 separate issues or where to start looking. Thanks

Randomly came across your video, quick question. I've always been interested in what it would take to make custom gauges in a stock bezel, and the simplest place to start was gauge faces. would you happen to know the material(s) is it made out of, and where could I source it?

I think it's great you made a business out of repairing those clusters. Hopefully you can still do it for another 10 years. With our throw away technology, it's awesome when someone can make a few bucks and save people from having to pay hundreds for something they cannot get anyways.
I restore and resell old lawn mowers and snow blowers. The newer ones are pathetic and have no quality or last very long. With the price of a New one, rebuilding just makes more sense.
My old LX176 mower and 1032 blower are trucken along nicely!

A properly remanufactured reprogrammed cluster with trans temp without a core return typically runs about five to six hundred dollars. My rebuild service is 130 plus the cost of a new lens and shipping.

Hey Jeff. I have an 04 yukon and swapped the cluster with a junkyard one.. it has the x25s and sweeps perfectly but my speedo reads wrong the error percentage varies between 9-12% so I can’t calibrate it by playing with the tire size in the ecu. Is there anything to be modified in the cluster itself or it just gets a direct signal from the ecu or maybe it’s just because of the x25s
Sounds like either the stepper motor is damaged, or whoever installed the new motors didn't properly set/calibrate the needles.
jeffescortlx it sweeps perfectly and smooth... but still it’s an x25 so I will try to swap it to an x27 and see
jeffescortlx I’m the one who installed it, no broken pads or anything and it’s calibrated right, I mean when the speed is 70 I’m actually going 75 and when it’s for example is 90 im going 110 so the error isn’t consistent, maybe the chip is different between trucks?
@@saudifixes9715 I think "calibrated" police spec clusters go to 140mph, maybe somehow your board got swapped for one of those.
jeffescortlx yeah that’s possible but it’s not available here in my country and when I swapped the board I was sure that it was the same clusters the only difference was the trans temp gauge
i have access to about 200 integument clusters. They are out of the vehicle however,I do not know functionality of any of them.

What/s the general cost on this repair? This is one of those things I'd always assume can't be fixed because replacement components would be non-existent unless you pull parts from other clusters and the repair costs would outweigh a replacement. Fascinating to watch. Are the bulbs motors and plastics things that can be bought separately or are these pulled from other vehicles?
Rebuild cost generally runs half of replacement cost. But there is no such thing as a "new" replacement. When your buying one from the dealer or parts store your just buying someone elses refurbished cluster. You you might as well save a buck and have your own cluster refurbished. Yes the important parts are available new.
Fantastic repair! Do you only work on GM products? Got a Honda cluster with what seems to be a bad speedo and tach needles. IOW it's misreading the actual speed and engine RPM.

I don't reccomended LED's.
I just rebuilt a gmt800 frame up and when I sent power I only got a battery light and my gear selection . Nothing else lit up or moved . I’m thinking grounds in cab ... any idea? Thanks in advance . You do great work btw
Probably missing a ignition circuit power, or maybe constant 12 missing.
Check for blown or missing fuses.
I ran more grounds on the truck last night and now I have all the power I’m supposed to . But my odometer isn’t working but the cluster did get soaked when my grange flooded . I’ll need it rebuilt leds, steppers , if I can get screen fixed . I’m going to email cprice in tn.

His i.c's should float away on a river of flux.
I watch him a lot, but he gets too silly at times.

Question: I have a PCM from a 2001 Tahoe and have been successful in using it on the bench to test the temperature gauge and fuel level gauge.
Tachometer is easy as I can just use a square wave directly to the cluster.
Speedometer not so easy. I have tried sending a square wave to the VSS inputs on the pcm and get nothing out to the cluster and shows 0 speed when watching it with a scan tool.
Any insight as to how to simulate a VSS input to the PCM?

I'm pretty sure I feed the VSS directly to the cluster for that generation to test the MPH.
What do you charge to fix these clusters I have an 04 silverado just did a motor and trans swap so mileage isn't right any more as well. It should read 108256 not 241
I'm sorry, but the state I'm located in the odometer has to represent the mileage of the chassis/vin not the engine.

No offense but I feel as if the junkyard would have had a cluster for less than $20! By the way how do you know where to reinstall the needles for the gauges? Years back I swapped the speedometer in a Crown Victoria. Re-used the original odometer so the needle had to come off and back on. It is not keyed, so I literally spent a couple of hours with the cluster disassembled driving down the road with my GPS trying to get the needle set as accurately as possible. Had to pull it off and reinstall multiple times. What a GD pain that was looking back at it!
Junk yard core value for 03-06 full size GM is typically $40, for the broken non working ones. Working ones sell for around $50 to $100 at junk yards, unprogrammed with random miles and condition. If the junk yard sells reworked ones it's $150-180 with core exchange (obviously they would not excepted this one as a core). Proper parts store/dealers reman/programmed starts at $220 with core ($300 core). So that's over $500 for a non trans temp reman programmed cluster with out a core. Now with a 2500 cluster with trans temp your looking at $600+. Ever time some one says they can find them at the junk yard for $20 I say sure, tell me where I'll buy every single one of them. As of now it's never been true.

So I've gone threw 4 clusters trying to fix a non moving clicking speed needle ...and it's the only gauge in the cluster that's not electric ...I admit I was trying to change the face on them....might I need that needle tool em I braking it somehow....but I also installed one I hadent messed with atall and still I just get clicks but no movement.....any help would be amazing ...keep up the fun work

I actually bought a new backing for my gauge cluter for my 2000 gmc jimmy sle... it's currently black but I got a blue one one with grey and white flames and I'm looking for a professional to clean my gauges cluster and do the upgrade

Do you only do GM? My 2013 RAM 1500 gauge cluster has lighting Gremlins. When the brightness is set to it's lowest setting it occasionally flickers, sometimes just completely going out. Mostly when it's cold outside too. Never does it at the dealership so they can't fix it

if you have to swap it for a new cluster how do the info from the ODO get transfered?
With a programmer or eeprom swap if the replacement cluster matches the same options.
