EKKO's 1,000-mile Shakedown Trip... MISTAKE or JOY?

- 1,000 miles from home in our new RV/Van/whatever-it-is EKKO... what can go wrong in our first six nights? What's it like driving... sleeping... cooking... showering... and just living in in this Winnebago Ekko. We done our and we share it with you.

Definitely an adventure, and one with humor as well. I love your choice of buying the Ekko and predict many more good times and adventures to come 😎. It is hip to be square, (telling my age now). If I may add a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt that was in a story in my local paper this past week. Even though she said this years ago, I thought it was very appropriate with our rv lifestyle. “ The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” - Eleanor Roosevelt. Being from Canton, Ohio, the “taking the Browns to the Super Bowl” remark is funny on many levels. I watch the Fitrv channel and they own an Ekko and I like it for many reasons… the bathroom is probably the biggest.

Our summer is very quiet, going from our cottage at Depoe Bay when it is hot in the Willamette Valley to our cabin in the valley when it is cooler. Back and forth, 1 short trip down the Oregon Coast for a week. Garden and a new yard to develop since we moved our little cabin down by the pond last fall.
We don't drink tank water. We carry 2-1 gallon water jugs,. From that to our 1 pint water bottles, 2 each, rotated in and out of the freezer section to freeze, thaw in refrigerator, and drink. We fill gallons with a filter or at a store filtered water, fill station. We really like the waffle weave cotton blankets, light and airy but warm when needed. We like a little weight, to hold in place on the bed....James
You guys are so real, we love it. We watch every video each week. Love the new rig, it suits you. Retired full timers we are. Love to see you all some time.
I was about to take my first bite of some delicious homemade brunswick stew when Owen's foot appeared on the screen. I settled for a few crackers to settle my upset stomach!!! Happy travels.

I tuned in after a busy month of company and fun, and I was like, 'wait, what? what?'. Now I see you two have made yet another great decision that keeps the Trekking Lifestyle going but with more space for those long trips. I'm sure the storage will come in handy for the grill and e bikes etc. I'll be looking forward to this new phase of Trekking adventures!

Loved this episode, so funny about the browns and talking to people when their walking by made me 😆. The shower conversion was pretty cool. It will be fun to see what y'all have in store in the future with the ekko.

We live in Illinois, close to Missouri and have stayed in several state parks there (although not the ones you were in.) We have never been disappointed. Although, we’ve stayed in Tennessee too, and those have been nice as well. Can’t think of a time when a state park (or COE, for that matter) has disappointed us. LOVE that Ekko shower/bathroom setup. I’m tired of sitting on a wet toilet seat! 😜 Have fun!

We own a Winnebago view 24V which is about the same size. We like it real well. From what I have seen, the Ekko is well insulated. We use a water additive in our tanks to supposedly sanitize the water/tanks. Put the additive in and fill the fresh water tank. So far no problems. We have onboard filters as well. I think the EKKO is a great combination of nimble and room. Happy tails in your new home away from home! Congratulations! And, as always, thanks for taking us along.
We are about the same size and I agree it is a great combination of being nimble with some extra space. Thanks for always following along.
I haven’t really upgraded my camping since my tent days. I still fill a few gallon jugs with water from the campground and put them in the Travato’s Murphy bed garage and then we pour that water thru a Brita before we drink it. This is our fifth RV, all have had some sort of inside sink - even our little pop-up - and we’ve always done it this way. I’m just not comfortable drinking water that’s been sitting in a plastic tank that may degrade from summer heat and give off VOCs. Flushing toilets is all we use our onboard water for. And the Truma. I do get tired of tripping over jugs of water, but probably that will never change…
Your chicken looked good but what we made tonight when we got home from a concert and it was late was one of Debbie’s meals. She & John had a 500 mile day and when they got into their campspot she whipped out a can of Progresso lentil soup, which we always have around, and some leftover rice and she chopped up some leftover spinach. We had all of that stuff on hand and I threw that together and we had dinner in 10 minutes. But I’ll try the chix tortellini Alfredo. Looks yummy! And I’m so jealous of your outside kitchen!
We struggle with drinking out of the tanks also. We’ve carried a Brita in the Travato but we would use the water in the tanks to fill it up. I got a water tester then and still use it. On the Revel we used a filter on the kitchen sink with a water tester. I’m not sure what we will do in the Ekko. Your meal sounds great, we’ll have to give it a try. Thanks so much for sharing, it is much appreciated.

Not totally surprised you purchased the EKKO. We have a 25’ Winnebago Navion and we appreciate the extra room on days we’re stuck inside. Our inside kitchen mimics yours and is the smallest we’ve ever had, it can be a challenge but it works. Now! Your outside kitchen is awesome! Might be a little jealous. Loved the video and sweet Maggie sure loves the lakes and the chicken too! Keep on having fun!,

yep... definitely hip and square here too! (thanks Huey lewis and the news for predicting this!) I can almost feel your thoughts on going square after the van-life. I think hubs and I went through that thought process as well... but yeah, for this grammy and grandpop, square gives us the space and amenities we really want for comfort. New adventures await!!! and the views are still gorgeous!!

I have a MAD and it came with both lithium 300 watts and a 2800 onan generator ....of course with solar---just wish the wet bath had that magic transformer door. Love watching your adventures.

I LOVE the bathroom...Owen cracked me up with his bathroom commentary...greeting passers by from the throne! He reminded me of the Wizard greeting people from the little round portal to Oz! Lynn, I love the kitchen and Maggie speaks English very well...she wanted some chicken! We may have to visit Defeated. That was beautiful. Y’all were in a great site on the lake (beautiful sunset and deer there. So much love from SC, Jane❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻
All I will say is Owen is a little Crazy… he does keep things interesting. It always surprises me how much Maggie can communicate with us. Much love!

That was a great shake-down trip! I saw that Cottonwood blowing and started sneezing lol. Those Missouri campgrounds looked so peaceful; water was beautiful too. It wasn’t a surprise that you switched to a larger RV. I actually went to an RV dealership close to me and there happened to be a Revel on the showroom floor. The first thing I thought of was you and I hopped up those steps to take a look, took 2 steps and had to turn around and hop out. Way, way too small for me; my claustrophobia kicked in quick. Can’t even imagine 2 people being cooped up in bad weather in a Revel for a day (or more). The EKKO looks great and has more space for you and those long trips you like to take. We've been to three Huey Lewis concerts, it's terrible that he has had to stop touring. Like the Hip to be Square tie in. Following along on the map, you found some great places. Looking forward to a full walkthrough. You've shown most of the RV in bits. It'll be nice to see it all tied together in one video.

Hello to all three of you. How exciting, a new rig. Been watching you all since your Alaska trip. Thank you for sharing your travels. Right now I’m on the Oregon coast camping near the Octopus tree. I’ve lived in Oregon for many years and didn’t even know we had that tree! So we are on a van trekking trip in our new to us Winnebago ERA. We love van life. We considered an Echo so I’m excited to see how it works out. Enjoy

Sounds like you got off to a great start with your new (to you) RV. Visiting some new campgrounds was an added bonus on this trip. I vaguely remember going to Kentucky Lake as a child but it looks like I should add it to my list of places we should visit. Guess I’m hip to be square. Huey Lewis and the News was one of my favorite 80s bands. Like they used to say on American Bandstand, their music has a good beat and you can dance to it. 😉 Looking forward to your next episode!

Like the new rig,,,can't wait to find out more about it...We were, I say "were" interested in a van, but I think you may have changed our minds.
We feel it’s a compromise between a van and a class c. We loved both of our vans but we just feel on longer trips we would like to have a little more space. It really all depends on how you want to travel. We will share all we can to help you make a decision… good and bad.

Looks great. We have a View with the same Care Free awning, do not trust the wind sensor. Ours was gone in a matter of seconds with a unexpected wind gust. I enjoy your travels.
I don’t think we would ever trust a wind sensor on any awning. We just don’t use the awning if there the least bit of wind… and we never leave it out if we are not at the rig. Sometimes we do leave it out enough to cover the door when it’s raining.

Great stuff, now how’s about the hot water heater/ heating system? AC ? Refrigerator? The solar system? I’ve loved this unit since I first saw it, so now I get to try it out with you guys.
Think that outdoor kitchen will replace use of the Blackstone? Forgot to ask if that was a composting toilet? Like the shower set up.

Great, real shakedown trip! Love the Huey Lewis Hip to be Square reference. I hope he gets wind of it along with Winnebago! It would make for great advertising. We are in the planning stages. Can't decide Solis 59px, Travato 59GL or Ekko. We like to hike and bike so Ekko would be my vote. I love Lynn said it was lower to the ground than revel making it ok to drive for her.

We have been parked in CO since May 1st and you guys are giving us Itchy Hitch to get going on an adventure again. We have to be here until Oct 24 when the snow will chase us out of Colorado, LOL.

@@VANTREKKINGlifestyle We do our eldercare in Winter Haven, FL where we managed an RV Park 2014 - 2021 about 2.3 miles from the old Cypress Gardens, now Legoland of FL.
After much looking and figuring out how we will use the he RV we decided the EKKO would be great fir us but financially it would be tough for us to handle so I think the Solis is the one for us. Thank you for all the info we have gained fir both of y’all. Hope to see you on the road. #bradkarengeauxc

Great shakedown trip! Just be careful with the on board navigation as it can’t take a vehicle profile. It will take your 10’ 6” EKKO under a 9’ overpass, your 11,000 lb. rig over a 3 ton bridge, take you onto parkways in the NY Metro area with low overpasses and large fines and through the I95 tunnels in Baltimore where you are not permitted due to propane. For my EKKO I use a Garmin RV GPS and enter the vehicle profile for safer routing.

I liked the Ekko but got a no go from the wife. I think it would be better with a lift. Think they make a 2-3” lift. Love the storage and water capacity.
You have to make the wife happy because like Owen always says Happy wife, Happy life. I do think we will be looking into a lift.

On our way back home I’m going to try to stay in state camp ground, based on what I see in your videos most of them are pretty nice. We are departing Athens Texas to Maryland (home).
Please, more information on why you prefer a generator.

Hey guys! Long time viewer. We currently have a pleasureway lexor van and we're looking at this ekko. Like the normal entry door, more windows, and the Ford chassis. Big ? Is whether we'd have more livable space. Would it be an improvement over our van? Would enjoy your thoughts

We both feel there is more livable space in the Ekko over the Revel and the Travato. I like the bedroom being in a separate space which makes it feel like you have more space. I hope this helps.
We have a 1998 ,what we believe is a class b+. 21 ft. The size is absolutely perfect for parking etc. If we could just transplant your interior into our rig I could talk husband into some more long travel maybe. 22 years old and still going down the road.Why can’t u.s. r.v makers listen to the actual users and design more rigs this size? Nice choice you guys. Love the twin set up. The travato had twins right? Enjoy.
That is a Forest Service Campground, Not COE! Had a heck of a time finding it on the map while making notes for a future trip.

ONE POT CHICKEN WITH TORTELLINI
PREP TIME
5 MINUTES
COOK TIME
15 MINUTES
SERVINGS:

Ingredients 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts or tenders cut into 1 inch pieces 20 ounces of refrigerated tortellini 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons flour 2 1/2 cups chicken broth 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese 1 1/2 cups fresh spinach 1 cup cherry tomatoes halved salt and pepper to taste 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
Instructions
* Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat.
* Add the chicken to the pan and season to taste with salt and pepper
* Cook, stirring occasionally, until chicken is browned and just cooked through, 4-5 minutes.
* Remove the chicken from the pan; cover with foil to keep warm.
* Add the butter to the pan and melt; whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
* Stir in the chicken broth and cook 2 minutes or until slightly thickened.
* Add the tortellini to the pan and bring to a boil; cook for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally to make sure tortellini is coated with liquid.
* Stir in the cream and parmesan and cook for 1 more minute.
* Add the chicken back to the pan along with the spinach. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until spinach is wilted.
* Fold in the tomatoes. Sprinkle the parsley over the top and serve.

No rattles or the droning noise we used to hear when you were in the Revel! How is the different cab and driving between the Merc and this Ford?

I would love to have an opening window in my bathroom in my Ontour. I have the view, but not the ventilation. There’s times when a little ventilation would be good.
