One detail missed is that large shields, such as the Steel Shield, have a higher deflection value. This means enemies are more likely to be forcibly bounced backward after striking the shield. Hitting an enemy in that off-balance state deals extra damage. Even some bosses will be deflected when you use a large shield. If you have the Strength for it, the Purple Flame Shield is great against everything but magic damage(the Dark Silver Shield is a perfect complement item in that case).

I'm doing exactly the same thing now. I have royal on lvl 30 something but he is so squishy now just created that knight but I have a hard time with blue-eyed knights.
Please don't take this guy's advice he's a fucking idiot hiding behind a shield like that it's just going to get you backstabbed and trolled playing like that.. with how low his Vitality is... have fun quitting out every Invasion encounter.. they also Nerf the scraping spear effect and also the damage is not great in PvP for high-level.. Might as well use a dedicated strength Dex or Faith Build you'll have more fun with melee or just do what everyone else does and just use spells if you want to be boring.. just watch out for anti-magic field I'll be using that a lot LOL

Haven't played Demon's Souls since it released for the PS3, but this Black Friday I managed to finally snag a PS5 at MSRP and Demon's Souls for just $30. Super excited to get back into it, created myself a Knight because it was feeling right for me, but then quickly realized I don't remember anything about how to properly build a character in this game anymore. 😅 Thank you for this guide. Great video! I've based my character on this guide a lot. I started with a normal knight. At first I was sceptical about the winged spear but I see its worth after playing for a bit. I am upgrading it quite heavily alongside the long sword and a bow (a ranged weapon is always a useful option). I did not use the Phalanx souls for weapon upgrade (did not know this was possible) so I cannot turn my spear into a boss weapon but I still plan to attempt it with my bow and sword. Thanks again for creating these videos, they really unfold the game for me!
Besides playing this on ps3 and only getting past the Phalanx boss, this is actually the build I started using in combination with the Hoplite shield, I've defeated 5 bosses now on the ps5, it works very well! Only exceptions were Flamelurker & Leechmonger. Thank you for all of your tips and wiki & being such a huge part of the souls community, I've used your tips for years!

Just curious. You say at the end of the video to take the sharp path for the winged spear which scales with dex but throughout the video you have a winged spear +10. Do you keep the winged spear at +10 for the first playthrough or do you upgrade to the sharp path when you can?

I know it’s late and you’ve likely already upgraded and finished the game even but you take the spear to sharp for your first play through and NG+. Once you get your sharp spear you pump strength/dex. In his videos on builds he will sometime show different snippets of gameplay. Otherwise he would have to play 10 separate times to show 10 seperate build guides. What’s on screen isn’t 100% what your build should follow. Listen to his words is my take. Hope that helps.
What upgrade path do you suggest for the spear, and why? (in the video I see you use the standard +10) Also very nice build, I like it a lot as a Souls noob :) Keep up the good work!
Surprised you didn’t make this a “Tower Knight” build as it’s much more similar to that boss than Yurt. There’s also a red phantom version that uses a steel shield and spear alongside Biorr’s armor which would be a good fit. I appreciate that you added a little flair to this version though.
Best thing to do is to go find low level enemies and practice dodging there attacks once you've got the hang of rolling your good it's always better to dodge than block.
I went into NG+ at soul level 109 thinking it would be a breeze and cannot beat either the tower knight or armored spider. I’m disappointed because I don’t want to give up but I also don’t want to bang my head against a wall over and over. It’s pretty frustrating.

What would be the best way to get more damage out of this build once I have 40end and 40vit? Keep the +10 winged spear and go quality build pumping both Dex & Str or is there another way? Using magic buffs or transforming the weapon type maybe?
I'm in the same boat. I'm beginning NG+, and have my winged spear at +10 but it feels weak now. I'm trying to figure out what weapon I can transition to that is stronger and wont be a pain in the ass to be able to use it properly/effectively
This build is super fun, but I feel like I'm completely useless against magic damage with this. Especially in 4-2 I can't get to old hero for some reason. In that narrow path to the snail lake.
Against magic, I would recommend the dark silver shield. It blocks 100% of magic, and is found on Garl Vinland’s body in the maiden Astraea fight at the end of world 5. Downside is that it’s a small shield. Maybe keep two in your inventory and switch around?
I’m going to say that seeing you fought the spider with not the build even being mentioned or constructed…he used the cheese spot and magic. It would be nice seeing a build being built, and whatever philosophy is being explained is what is being used against bosses
I'm reasonably new to souls games but struggling between this, Soul Mage and Holy Paladin... And the rest of your builds. I'd love to do Holy Paladin but it seems quite advanced, with the world tendency... Etc. (as it says in the description!)
Don’t get caught up about the spear. You don’t need it at all for the Holy Paladin to be viable. Switch it out for any of the blessed weapons that suit your style. Mace, hammer, claymore etc. I run two blessed weapons. Mirdan Hammer and mace. If you keep your weapons a level apart the hp regen stack. So blessed +5 hammer and +4 mace and shield on my back.
I found that you can do pretty decent damage with this build if you swap to 2H. I used 2H on a lot of bosses and certain enemies where blocking was less important.
Still learning the game so got a dumb question. For the scraping spear is there a max dexterity to when the damage stops going up or do you just keep on going?
Sharp can only be applied to a level 0 weapon.. so you'd need a new Winger Spear to make it sharp.. I am not enough of a wizard in this game to understand why we would ever take Sharp over regular +10.. since we aren't taking any Dex..

@@Holysnowva Yeah there's no way you should be going sharp immediately in a build that is running like 14 dex for the first half of the game or more. I think that was a miscommunication in the video.
Man. Probably cuz it’s my second character, but I am having a crazy easier time with this setup than my royalty/magic build lol. I’ve hardly died to anything other than falling and a bad move on my part against adjudicator.. thanks for this, it’s been fun so far.
Your videos are all good quality and what I'm about to say is not directed at you in a toxic way, but I think that this play style is what turn this types of games boring and I think a new player would be better off trying new things instead of going with this type of "safe way" to play. Cheers
I first chose a knight, but then decided to restart and use a temple knight. Now that dude who practices soul art won’t teach me any thing and calls me a brute. Is there a way to fix this
He might be an NPC who teaches magic spells and not faith spells. Just make sure your faith or magic stats are high enough and they should teach you spells. Just note that there are magic spells and faith spells, 2 different categories, and requite different stat requirements.
The dragons will leave if you switch your world to Pure White World tendency. That will depend on the type of build you’re running. If you’ve followed Gloom Knight then it will be the Sharp Winged spear. Scraping is primarily for PvP. Strategy wise you bait him to do his rushing attack, last second roll, strike a few times and then back up. Any other attack just avoid altogether until you can bait his rush attack and then strike. Don’t get greedy. If your really struggling you can cheese him with lots of arrows and a good bow, just don’t move away from the fog wall and keep your back against the wall. Keep peppering him with arrows. Oh and you will need to equip thief ring.

Why not the Purple Flame Shield early on? I know it requires putting more points into Strength.
You can get the hoplite shield even if you don't have the digital deluxe edition

It’s a shame they didn’t let Bluepoint do DLC. More weapons would have increased build variety which this game is lacking

I feel like no damage will make many of the bosses hard. You can’t block through the flamelurkers slam.
Nah, the build makes you so tanks that flamelurker becomes really easy
you will still need to dodge the slam. and use white goop on your spear

50 dexterity is the “hard cap” for dexterity scaling, after that the damage you get is very minimal and not worth it

I know it’s an old comment, but sharp upgrades take away from strength scaling to add to dex scaling, so I suggest quality if possible, or just normal
