Amazing.production. i saw it and I love it. The singers are solo great. And the stage direction is so clever and strong. Thank you Bertrand Dubilly and Lydia Steier
I don't like the black staging, but I think I can understand why it was chosen. Otherwise, I love it. This is the first time I have heard any work by Spontini so it is a discovery that opens a new avenue for me, and an avenue I have enjoyed immensely. Thank you to Opéra national de Paris and to OperaVision for making this superb music available to the world.
I was lucky to attend this performance in person and the singing of Mr. Spyres and Mrs. van der Heever was great, but the scenography is dull and gloomy with a haunting apocalyptic and totalitarian context. I bought video broadcast and later reviewed everything in detail. Director was obviously focused on the stream as the production details only play out in close-ups and not in the huge Bastille auditorium.
I had the luck to attend this performance; I have to admit I went mostly because I wanted to hear Michael Spyres live at least once in my life ;) and it was definitely worth it. Truly a magnificent voice. Some of the staging details did fall away a little, especially in a theatre as cavernous as the Bastille. But then I can respect that design choice when it's done to enhance this stream, which makes this whole opera available to anyone who wishes to see it, for free, in very high quality. Wonderful to be able to see the singers' expressions so clearly - I was sitting a little too far away to do that properly, so this really adds a lot as a second viewing!
I have long heard about this opera but never seen a complete production. Pretty powerful work in my estimation. The obvious similarity is with "Norma" of Vincenzo Bellini as far as the plot goes.
I usually don't care for these "edgy" reimagined productions, but I have to say this one was poignant and well thought out, especially what we can call the twist ending. A pure joy musically as well.
What a way to distort the historical-cultural contexts of stage directors today. I devoted myself more closely to the music, the singers and choirs of the opera. The goddess Vesta represented the flame of the home and its joy, far from the darkness that the stage director shows us in this presentation and what Gaspare Spontini originally wanted to show us.
This trend of "all-grey" modern productions has been quite cliche for over two decades. All the same I love the orchestra and all solists. The cast is superb! The production itself is well done it's just that it's the wrong opera for the talent that was put forth - I hope they bring their creative forces together again for the correct show.
Great opera, and I thought aspects of the fascist-state production worked well, but I'm never going to be down with any production that completely alters the ending so the director can make a point. That's bullshit, and it retroactively ruins the entire thing.

Excellent production. I never thought I would see this opera in my lifetime. Thank you!
Beautiful music. Beautiful singing. Thank you.
