    Yes, to no drainage, clear glass vessels for anthuriums and alocasias! I get my glass vessels from the thrift store. You can also put leca at the bottom, your potting mix in the middle to cover the roots, and top with sphagnum moss for humidity. Because the sphagnum moss is just on the base of the plant and not on the roots, it's easier to remove when you have to unpot the plant 😊

      Nice! I do have one anthurium with Leca at the bottom, but for experiment reasons I didn't with these ones. Plus I didn't have any extra Leca on hand 😂 I want to see if the Leca or no Leca really makes a difference for the health of the roots

    Soil wetting agents act as a detergent to the waxy, impenetrable coating that can surround your soil particles causing hydrophobia. Breaking down the waxy coating, soil wetters allow the water to reach a plants' roots, ensuring it gets the goodness that it needs.

    Thanks Jeff. After learning about no drainage from another Canadian youtuber, I have moved approximately 25 plants into thrift store glass containers. I layer leca, then pon and finally the plant in a chunky mix. Almost all are thriving. I haven't moved any anthuriums into no drainage, as I only have a precious few.

      That is awesome! I didn't layer the bottom on these ones as I want to compare to the anthurium radicans one, which I have Leca at the bottom

    I have also been using no drainage glass jars for 2 yrs and the plants (zz, various pothos, bmarxe,scindap,agleo,sansev,monsteta) seem ok, with some pumice drainage layer. You're right, spraying is better to spread the moisture and replicate rain. What I do sometimes is poke a tunnel on one side of the jars so that air can flow a bit and dry the different layers of soil from top to bottom. My exotica is trailing and doing very well w/out drainage.

    Perfect timing. I am not growing any anthuriums at all. But I have decided to make that my 2023 plant goal: one anthurium. Interestingly, dorayaki is the one I want to grow and I've been doing a ton of video binging on no-drainage glass vessels for them. I'm still kind of confused on watering with no drainage. I'll be interested to see any updates from you on what you learn.

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think as long as it's in a clear container where you can actually see the moisture levels, you should be fine. Run into trouble is when you have a pot. You can't see the moisture levels. It's really tough to know how much or if it even needs water.
      The dorayaki is a beautiful anthurium and if you can get your hands on it I would recommend it. So far it's been a very easy going anthurium for me. Let me know if you have any other questions. I'll be more than happy to help

  • @MarisaAndChew

    I can't wait for an update on this mix and on these specific plants! For years I grew several plants in pots with no drainage with no issues, just didn't water as often, it would be nice to get a ride or die local (Canada) soil! I used to use the marphyl phytoplankton soil enhancer with each watering and my collection seemed to like it but with no real npk on it and it being fairly pricy I switched back to the synthetic. I loved that it was made in BC though and their process didn't deplete the ocean.

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah you definitely just have to watch how much you water in parts with no drain holes. There's nothing wrong with it. It just can be tricky sometimes.
      There was another fertilizer company that didn't specifically advertise their NPK values simple because it was not marketed as a fertilizer, the levels were fairly low and weren't able to give an exact percentage.

    When I put my plants in no drainage, I tend to go a bit chunkier than that mix because of the access to more moisture without drainage. I prefer pumice and more bark in my mix 🙂 But of course, substrate depends so much on conditions that you can’t really say “this is the best substrate”

    That mix looks nice and breathable but I personally really hate bark. No clue why. I'm guessing BC of my orchid days. I felt it never really held onto any moisture and was too fast draining l. I've still got about half a bag of bark but I never add it to anything. I recently got some plants at Safeway and they had the bark and they're there 6 only plants that feel and look dry (until I use the moisture meter) and when I lift them they are usually sitting in water. I just bought miracle gro potting soil, cactus and perlite today as I ran out yesterday and I'm planning to top dress with the potting soil so the moisture isn't only at the bottom. I tend to water in place so any plants with a decorative pot can it's at risk of being forgotten when it comes to emptying excess, unlike with a saucer that I can toss a microfiber cloth on and stick up the extra 🤷🏼‍♀️😬 #lazyplantparent

    I learned about no drainage potting from unplantparenthood and have been trying growing plants in it since, and I'm glad to see that other people are trying it as well because for the longest time people have treated the advice of having drainage holes as a rule otherwise you're sure to kill your plant. I am curious though, what was your reason for trying it? Was there something wrong going on with your plants in drainage or are you just experimenting?
    From my experience, no drainage allows me to look at the state of the roots and when I should water it, since I'm bad with guessing based on the weight or the moisture of the soil on top. I can also be less wasteful with my water and fertilizer, and my home also gets less dirty with soil because of the lack of drainage holes. I also have a layer of pumice at the very bottom, the purpose of it is so the excess water that pools down can slowly wick its way up to the substrate instead of sitting with the substrate and making it soggy for a long period. Think of the pumice layer as something similar to placing a bowl of rocks and water below a pot to add humidity, without having the roots sit on it.

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First off....love your name 😂. I have seen a few others using the no drainage method.....and the reason is simply curiosity. There is not ONE exact method to growing plants because there are other external factors at play...such as varying humidity, light and other conditions that are different among our homes. I simply like trying different methods to see which works best for my conditions....and I simply film it haha

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey sorry. It simply comes down to (at least I think it does) retaining moisture for plants that appreciate a slight more consistent moist soil. Then have the glass to see the roots. It allows you to see the moisture level and kinda goes against the 'must have drain holes' advice. Now plants that I would always recommend having drain holes are plants that have thin roots like cactus, succulents, hoya and even peperomia
