Jill Marie Jones miscalculated. She assumed that her success on Girlfriends would translate the same or better in film, but she was excellent on Girlfriends.
Where you are (place) matters as much as what you are (talent, gift). You can have the right talent and be in the wrong place and nothing works.
I remember her on the show and how she exhibited comedic timing with such skill, but when she took herself off the show and moved to the next thing before her time (I believe), she miscalculated her influence. She should have stayed on the show to the end and then moved on to filmmaking or did both at the same time.
One thing about Jaclyn Smith (Charlie's Angels) and Jennifer Aniston and the Friends' crew is that they stayed on their respective shows to the very end. Look at the people who left early (Farrah Fawcett and Kate Jackson) and see how their lives fared.

Jill Marie Jones was in over her head portraying the very nasty and challenging character of Toni Childs...Portraying the Toni Childs-character actually hurt Jill Marie Jones' career...She should have been cast as a more likeable character because a likeable character is an easier portrayal...An actor has to have a strong and versatile skill set to portray an unlikeable character while still letting their humanity show...And she just did not have it...There were some storylines that tried to make her more likeable by softening her up but it was not enough to overcome the industry's first impressions of Jill Marie Jones the actor... Just saying...

The Toni Childs-character should have been the breakout character on Girlfriends instead of the Joan Clayton-character and...If a stronger and experienced actor like Keesha Sharpe or Tichina Arnold and even Vivica Fox or Nia Long would have portrayed the Toni Childs that character could have been a whole lot more than just "Black famous"....Tracee Ellis Ross was a stronger actor than Jill Marie Jones... That's why when folks talk about Girlfriends they think of the Joan Clayton-character more often than the Toni Childs-character

@@markrichardson1657 I know this! When Jill Jones' contract was up on Girlfriends Did the show's producers offer her a spin-off--NO!! The producers actually made a Girlfriends' spinoff on Joan's cousin instead of the Toni Childs-character! Why? Because even though she is beautiful they knew Jill Jones acting was not strong enough actor to carry a spinoff show on her own...Despite all of Jill Jones's "connections" in Hollywood and the sports industry, her career after Girlfriends has been "average" at best! The Joan character was annoying but Tracee Ellis Ross acting still showed her humanity and still made you want to root for her and since Tracee Ross's career has had a good run which includes her role in the Oscar quality movie American Fiction
