the day that never come
I recently bought with my dear Mum's inheritance money, (She died of cancer in July), a Suhr Classic S Antique. This instrument is the finest, most well built guitar I have ever played or owned. It is a remarkable piece of craftsmanship indeed. Thank you John Suhr. Yes it was expensive, but isn't anything that is top of the line?

I love everything about this...except for the headstock. To me, it looks more like budget brand's design than that of a world-class builder. I still love my Standard and my Classic T though.

I have had a BB King ES355, SG Custom and a Les Paul Studio all I regard as outdated guitars. However, the les paul is chambered with 490/498 pickups with coil split I have put a String butler on to straighten the strings and it is as good as you get in terms of Gibson. Single cuts are not my favourites I believe the Pete Thorn signature is better than the Aura. For me I think there are a lot of people out there who want a better Les Paul, PRS to me is better for the cheap range and for more upmarket Kiesel and Collings have it covered. Joe Walsh switched from Gibson to Kiesel a long time ago!
So you retained the edge of the guitar the forearm rubs against. You had a chance to get rid of that ridge, but you kept it. It's the only thing I don't like about my Les Pauls. The damned ridge.
harlon57 agree! This is why I sanded down the bloody edge!
On the website he discusses that he always wanted to rid the guitar of the little imperfections...what could be more imperfect than that damned ridge?
You would have to try it. It isn’t evident but the binding is much thicker than a Lester so it has a nice radius which the Lester doesn’t have. Also the ergonomics are different with a deep dish carve and the tummy cut it sits a little different on your body so there is no arm bruising.

John Suhr sooo, I’ve built a Tele for my brother, but he was unhappy with the non ergonomic shape that a Tele body has. I wanted to go full strat carve on that guit, but then I got back to your way of a tummy relief and it worked! Subtle, elegant, something that is not distorting the original Leo’s design. Thank you John.
For someone looking to get their first singlecut how does that stack up against some of the PRS equivalents? I imagine both would be at similar price points?
The only way to answer this is play both. I'm a PRS guy but I've never played a Suhr that wasn't a phenomenal instrument. The bottom line is something about one of them will speak to you and only you will know what that is.
AndyNyle Play each of them and pick the one you like the most.
With either manufacturer you are going to get a high quality instrument.

Can a "pickguard" be mounted for those of us that like to keep our pinky on a piece of plastic while picking? Sorry to want to cover the 'burst beautiful top. Likely, I would want a gold top anyway.
You need to make a version of this for about 3k for next year if you do I will buy one and you guys would kill Gibson

I am a diehard PRS guy. With that being said - integrity, quality and competition are beautiful things. John and his team make stunning, top tier guitars and if someone choses a Suhr they're guaranteed to get an amazing instrument. Variety is the spice of life!
No, its a Suhr. We are talking apples to oranges here. Very nice apples to oranges. PRS has its own voice and Suhr has its own voice.
I play Suhr guitars but I'd say the 594 is a more unique guitar. PRS' single cut guitar is a better comparison really.
Aside from the standard & modern models, all the other Suhr guitars (S,T,J & Aura) are essentially custom shop reproductions of Fender & Gibson classics, along with some modern refinements. I'm not sure the Aura is supposed to have a unique sound of its own but simply be the best custom shop quality LP you can buy.

Seems like Gibson’s making worst les pauls these days..
The Les Paul isn’t a good design to begin with considering its headstock and string angle makes tuning a real chore and never stays in tune.
@john m well the thing is nothing can match the resale value of a Gibson Les Paul. Plus, the need for that 'headstock sticker'.

Nobody buying an Aura is spending their last $8000 on it. Your inability to see the worth in these guitars means absolutely nothing to anybody.

You're right. PRS are just concentrating on their SE line. Their NAMM booth (for a big boy guitar maker) was abysmal. Total disappointment.
