Did you know that the fact that spiders bite is actually really weird? Of all the arachnids in the world, spiders are the only ones with venomous bites! But crazy enough, they've also conquered the entire globe. So how do spider bites make them such dangerous and efficient predators? We're gonna find out.

Here at MyWildBackyard we investigate the secrets of the natural world- secrets that can be hidden in our very own backyards! I want to share the incredible world of insects, spiders and other wildlife with you and inspire you to explore your curiosity. Get out there, and find your adventure!
For those who read the description- we've updated the channel! I'm working on adding more features to videos to better expand our conversations about the secrets we find in the natural world! Introducing the Creature Tier System! There are four rankings:
1. Staple - These are the lowest tier creatures. They are the most common species in a given habitat, and while they're not boring, they're really only exciting when you're exploring a new habitat and you haven't seen them before. Not something to write home about.
2. Neat - These are a step up from Staple. They don't make your entire day, but they are worth taking a closer look at when found. Definitely can be exciting to have a productive day finding many Neat species.
3. Wild - These are exciting to find. Whether they have interesting defensive features that offer a nice challenge in the field, are particularly cool looking, or maybe a little bit rare, Wild species aren't necessarily the MOST memorable of encounters, but they definitely make your day when you see them. An adventure featuring many Wild species will truly be memorable.
4. Gem - These are special. Usually involving extremely interesting biology and significant rarity, Gem species are animals that you really do not see every day. These species can make your whole adventure, and will be very memorable.

still love your statment "they are kinda Dark Souls" looking 🙂
"Forgotten corners" Little bro is always right by my toilet in plain site. We have a contract. You stay there, I'll stay here. And we are good.
Love it.
Same 😂 I used to have cellar spiders (the only spider that scares me) that hung out by the edge of the sink. Whenever I went I kept a very close eye on them and gave them their space 😂
😂😂😂

(Lovely video as always!)
Gregor's doin his best to watch you at least! So glad you enjoyed!

I wanna share something that happened. I did a speech a couple weeks ago in my college public speaking class on "why you shouldn't kill spiders."
Well, before people started getting pulled to come up and give their speech, I saw a jumping spiders on the desk across from me. I picked it up, and the professor was shocked. He let me go first, and I held the jumping spider in my hand the whole speech.
Couldn't have been more perfect.
Aw!
This channel has not only allowed me to be around nature but has evolved my mind. Thank you for everything you do!
Some of these spiders are quite the artists with their webs . I know there's a tiny spider that build a larger dummy spider from all sorts of scraps or insect carcass.
They are architects of nature
I actually want to go into that a bit with orb weavers this spring or summer! So much cool stuff most people don't know about spider webs
@@MyWildBackyardDon't forget the Spiny Orb Weaver!
@@emilyadams3228 you bet. Those guys are so cool
@@MyWildBackyardI saw a fat-abdomen mature spider catch a bug, bring it up on its thread, then another spider barely the same size of the prey, wrap then eat.
I fvcking wish I had video.
Only two days ago. I'm going to look up wtf species it is.
Over 30 years ago, I was pulling the canvas off an army HQ tent near Kununurra (W.A) and discovered a large spider had taken up residence near the ceiling. It was sandy-coloured, and appeared to be a huntsman, but more heavily built. I captured it using a towel and took it several metres away before shaking it onto the ground. Rather than run for cover, it turned and showed a threat-pose, before it rushed towards me. I retreated, but every time I paused, it came after me again. It was disconcerting because I could easily have killed it, yet there I was, retreating from a spider! I ended up luring it towards a tree before trotting out of it's sight. It's the only time I've seen a spider display anger.
Spencer ‘there’s probably a spider in your room right now watching you watch this video.” Well i was watching this video. Now I’m more like listening to the video. Thanks man.
There's a cellar spider living in the lamp above my kitchen sink. It's been up there for a few months. I don't what it's eating, but it's molted twice.
there's actually two spiders watching me, because I have two tarantulas sitting next to me on my desk haha
Have you ever thought about doing a video on Sydney funnelwebs? If you ever get the chance to film one of course
I sure have! Soon as I get to go to Australia that’s my biggest target to film!
Yet another banger Spencer!! Truly fascinating how much there is to learn about subjects most people overlook… absolutely incredible little critters we share our world with :)
The most intimidating spider I've seen in real life was a sac spider. It wasn't afraid to do the threat pose when I put a stick close to it to coax it into a box. They have some serious attitude, man.
Spiders in my house posted yesterday. My backyard today.
Life is good.
Travis’ brown recluse video was excellent!
@@MyWildBackyard both videos were excellent. The only thing this one didn't have was a show tune 🫠💀🤣😂🤣👻
3:27 is this the Arizona's fang?
Florida actually. She died end of January unfortunately so I used her as another specimen. Have the Arizona one pinned in a case
I bet we'll even discover a new species of spider in Antartica one day.
Oh that would be wild.
There are a million videos about spider out there but I really enjoy how you present the information. Always looking forward to a new video.
Thanks so much! Glad you’re enjoying, what should we cover next?
Maybe a more detailed look in to the spinnerets. It'd be cool to learn about the different kinds of silk spiders can make and how they are able to do that.

Great idea. Thinking of a deep dive into orb weavers and other web builders for this very reason!
Man, I can’t wait until your channel has millions of subscribers. The work you do and research on each topic is awesome! I’d rather watch your channel than anything that’s ever been on TV. Never seen a video of yours that wasn’t fascinating!
Spencer both you and Jack are in my opinion the two best wildlife teachers on social media, and I hope one day to see the both of you expand your knowledge and love for nature to main stream media,so the whole world will be educated and entertained with your expertise on nature🙌
That would be incredible! To be honest though I almost wonder if TH-cam and other social platforms are becoming the new mainstream, possible that this might be where Jack and I make our claim!
This was an awesome video, I particularly loved delving into the lesser-known tidbits of the spider's physical abilities, and honestly their ancient history as a species makes more sense when their successful strategy is broken down and ezplained in more detail.
Ti seguo spesso, sei una persona molto coraggiosa e molto preparata. Grazie per i tuoi video.
I freehandled a huntsman spider earlier today and as an arachnophobe it was terrifying, but yeah i'm getting there😂
Wow, nice one. I’m an arachnophobe, too, but I couldn’t even handle an small house spider.
Hi Spencer . Hope you're doing well . Every single one of those Spiders Creep me out . The larger ones even more so . Very informative Video . Have a great weekend . 🎸
Oh My God !! That Wandering Spider at 11 : 25 is a dam nightmare !! I'm trying to get over my Phobia by watching your Videos , but I might be making it worse . LoL !!
"There's probably a spider in your room, right now, watching you while you watch this video"
Yep! There's a Giant House Spider chilling above me right now.
The Texas wolf spider came back! I’m loving these more science oriented videos and a bunch of nice footage to boot.
I have really enjoyed watching your content in the past two years. It is nice to see how far you have come and your production quality improving. You deserve your channel success Spencer, I am proud of ya mate!
Spence, this video may just be the best introduction to spiders and getting people to respect them I've seen. You nailed every single point and didn't exaggerate anything to scare people. I even learned a bit from it (chelicerae mouthpieces).
Your channel is 100% the reason I am no longer afraid of spiders. I respect them, but I don't scream when I see them now. 😌So thank you for that!
Brother. Amazing video. I am so stoked your channel is growing so fast. I predict in the next 10 years, you and Jack will become among the worlds most popular nature documentarians.
Keep it up bro! And try not to get bitten by accident too much :)
PS. You guys need to take it easy as well though. As the size of your Gigantic Balls are putting us men to absolute shame here!
I have the same giant house spider who comes out every night and crawls onto my face to say good night. One of my mates witnessed it once and completely freaked out. Spidey seems to know when I've been out as well because he rushes out and reaches with front legs until I let him crawl onto my hand.
Fact: Spiders do have feelings, but unlike a dog or a cat, they won't bond with you. In fact, they likely won't even recognize you, so spidey is just curious.
So, yes, there are a few species of spiders that can absolutely harm humans. But actually, those are few and far between. The bigger issues is whether or not you're allergic to a certain species of spider.
Back when I was 19 (many years ago), I was bitten by a spider in my sleep. It hurt and actually woke me up, after which I proceeded to kick my legs until I'm sure the thing was obliterated.
The next day, it itched so bad I almost couldn't stand it. A couple of hours later, the site had swollen to the size of my cupped palm and itched so badly it was literally all I could think about. I used the medic kit at my job and put cortisone cream on what I felt was the center of the bite. I couldn't see it, so I didn't know. I just aimed for the middle.
An hour later it was larger than my cupped palm and itched so much I couldn't stand it. I went to the bathroom and dropped my pants to be able to see my shin. I removed the bandaid I'd placed over the cortisone to find a tiny white head.
I pinched it with my thumbnails and when it opened, it erupted like a volcano with white cheesy drainage. I gently pushed and it gushed again.
I started working my way in from the outer redness towards the center. Copious cottage cheese erupted out of that tiny hole. I worked my way from outside in, with the hole erupting, but the redness disappearing on the outer edge.
I kept on pushing from the outside in until I had no more cottage cheese coming out. There was a tiny bit of redness around the hole I'd made, and the itching stopped immediately.
The next day, you wouldn't have been able to tell there was a huge, cupped palm sized red area. There was no redness. No itching. It was completely healed.
I have no idea which spider bit me. I obliterated it in my sheets, half asleep.
What I do know is that I was absolutely reactive to the venom. The itching was the worst. It itched so bad I was panicky. Once I was able to drain the site, the itching stopped immediately.
I wish I hadn't obliterated the spider so that I could identify it. But, I was sleeping when I was bitten and the obliteration was instinctive. I never experienced anything like this before, and not after.
Thank goodness! That itching was intolerable.
5 months ago i recorded a video of a garden spider that caught an anole lizard, it was the first time that i seen one prey upon a reptile. Good video spencer.
“There’s probably a spider in your room, right now watching you while you watch this video…” you didn’t have to do this to me 😭😭
Love having such great footage of our states native wildlife. I use you clips for my students often. Ty
Great video, as always! I love learning more about venom. The fact that so many different species have developed venom - and that venom can vary so widely in its effects - is what makes it so fascinating to me. Plus there’s so much we can learn from it!
Love it! Thank you for such an educational, fascinating, and awe-inspiring look into these magnificent animals. "The business end of these fangs" is somewhere I surely don't want to be 😅
This was a fantastic watch. Very informative and entertaining, you're a natural on camera, and I love your passion to educate people about these creatures. I'm not going to sit here and say I think spiders are cute and cuddly and that my pulse doesn't jump a little bit when I see a big wolfie in the corner of my room, but videos like these have definitely helped to give me more of an appreciation of these animals.
Great job as always Spencer and as usual very informative. Keep up the good work 👍
Fantastic informative video Spencer you really do some very cool ones. I look forward to Saturdays to see what next you're going to tell us.
Have to watch after work tonight but CAN'T WAIT!!
Let me know what you think! These past two weeks I've been trying a bit of a different approach while I work on getting some new trips lined up, hope you enjoy!
I've been subscribed for a while now, but this might be my favourite video (I'm maybe also a bit biased because of the topic)! Gonna share this with my friends and family to turn them from arachnophobics into arachnophiles just as I did once I learned more about these amazing creatures.
The three pet spiders just chillin in my house:
You have made me less afraid of spiders so thank you spencer
0:01 Mashallah mr spider
Very interesting :) Thanks for your videos!
I woke up the other day to a tiny spider showing me a threat pose. It was about the size of my finger nail. You gotta admire it. Being so tiny threatening something my size the back off warning took guts. 😂
Fantastic video dude! GOD I LOVE SPIDERS 🤩
Wait till we go to Peru and Australia and find some PROPER spiders 👀
I really wish you didn’t make that comment about a spider watching me. I won’t be able to sleep tonight.
I used to play with insects when I was a kid. I stopped doing that after a lady bug bit me. I stopped playing with catapillars when the hair on them got into my skin. It was a very unpleaseable experience. I used to play with bees until I got sting about 5 times. I guess I was a dumb kid
I wouldn’t say dumb just fascinated while life
god every vid you make continues to be great! I loved the format of this one, obvs i love all kinds of vids you do but this was such a good introductory video to biological evolution :D
You should do a video about pseudoscorpions. Id love to learn more about them.
The vinegaroon is especially interesting.
I’m allergic to yellow jackets so this clip brings me much schadenfreude. 0:13
Knew it would be a hit 😂 I was shocked when I found that spider too
Sometimes, I think that 'why'd you bite me' question's answer could simply be this: "Look homie, no offense but I'm famished, and was hunting for some grub before you came along, and you're about to let me get back to it." Every once in a while, you eventually cross paths with someone that could use a Snickers.
Hi!
that is a cool looking spider. that would make a good pet I'll bet. love them hidden critters no one can see. great show {q}
*me looking around my room*
Cool 😎 spider 🕷️
Lmfao, did you really just say the whip scorpion looks like a Dark Souls enemy? 😂
Have you thought about making a video on sea spiders? They look pretty interesting, I'm not sure how difficult it would be to find one in the wild to present to cameras though lol.
YES. I actually know a spot a couple hours from me where they’re findable. Gonna do some research on them so I can see what neat secrets they’re hiding
Nice stuff brodercito
The same defense mechanisms employed by some critters also work against them when it comes to humans. We're a destructive species that is not content to live and let live when another animal is a threat(perceived or real).
Haha I have 4 watching me, I've noticed my bold jumpers like to watch my computer.
Best content on YT! ❤❤
Spencer great subject venom enjoyed that thanks
I'm hearing you , but Spencer , surely Ants are the real champions of survival
There are some spider species that prey on ants by mimicking them and also steal their prey.
Did I just see a clip of an Ant-Lion?!🤯🫠My favorite insect larvae!
I think there are insects more frightening than most spiders. Giant killer katydids, raspy crickets, Jerusalem crickets, and giant water bugs are definitely intimidating and can be aggressive. Even crustaceans such as the Japanese spider crabs and coconut crabs maximize on the creep factor. It has been highly suspected that coconut crabs were the direct cause of death of Amelia Earhart. As in, they ate her alive as she lay injured from her crash; unable to move or escape. 😵💫
you deserve millions of subs
Thank you! We’ll get there one day for sure
Me: laughing with 100's of jumping spiders for pets in my room
😂
Out of all the toxins out there, the Braz Wandering Spider has the biggest disrespect of all time. Why?!
Erector set
I like this show over that other one with the stupid guy who over acts getting bit by everything...here I feel like I'm learning something about all the critters roaming this world.
Glad to share! Once in a while I’ll take bites too but really only if it’s for mythbusting purposes. Most of the time these little things really don’t want to bite at all.
A fascinating video.
The spider watching me watch this video keeps telling me how they're way prettier than these "superstar model" spiders you keep showing. :p
I ♥ Spiders
2:27 DARK SOULS
Because they love you, that's why.
HA! Jokes on you Spencer. I’m watching this video in my kitchen, and I KNOW FOR A FACT that there are at least 2 house spiders that live here. They always watch me, their names are Jerry and Samantha. Much love brother 🍻
2:11 WHAT IS THAT!? I NEED TO KNOW!?
No spiders in my room.
Spencer, did you see in the news that a man has died from a Gila monster bite in AZ the other day?
I DID! Very unusual! Seems to have been an extremely bad reaction to a bite from a captive specimen, but their venom definitely is no joke!
I have four spiders in my room. You all don't know how many bugs crawl in your home. The girls are very welcomed 🤗
Is that a "funnel web" spider at 11:04-11:07? If not, what kind of spider is it?
"There's more than one way to skin a Womp Rat." - Obi Wan Kenobi - The Clone Wars
Hello there
@@MyWildBackyard General Kenobi! You are a bold one.
They bite for getting food and self defence 🕷
Blame it on the parents. It starts there. We need accountability.
With different cocktails of venom, how can we really be sure of true effects of a spider bite. I would think that means that no 2 bites are alike and that isn't even taking into consideration of how people react differently... Or am I overthinking this? 🥴
That is absolutely the question! Our best method is to gather data from confirmed bite reports and make inferences based on the symptoms we see, and compare with what we call “venomics” (basically a protein sequence of an animal’s venom). This plus lab tests that show what each compound does (painstaking research) reveals a good guess of what compounds they inject. Venom science is wild.
fear and food is why spiders bite.
why do we need to eat?
yea im still only a fan of jumping spiders and wolf spiders. big brain spiders with non lethal venom 😎
I wonder if there’s a spider watching this video with me 😁❤️ 🕷️
There’s spiders in my room right now please don’t say that 😢
So, why do spiders bite?
Womp rat video when?
Spiders actually LOOK poisonous.
Yet another reason I love spiders. Yellow jackets are MEAN
Mind boggling man..
That should've been it but new comera with female widows and humans at the same time I 'm like bro..,
Did you determine if you were actually envenomated by that red widow or if it was dry (or semi-dry)?
100% envenomated. Just only had a split second to latch on so it was a low dose. Had I let her stay there and pump me full of venom it would have been a lot worse.
@@MyWildBackyardOuch. Looked like that widow was out for blood for whatever reason. That's the problem with small spiders like that, as you can't read their body language and, even if you could, they're way too fast to do anything about it.
Would you try to handle another red widow? Do you think they're naturally more aggressive/defensive than browns or blacks?
spiders will evolve into mammals. Screencap this
Spencer, this shows me of GOD'S handiwork, and NOT evolution.
Fishing Spiders are so neat! Not to mention, adorable! I always have a hard time telling them apart from Wolfie's. I remember as a kid, my mom took us brats down to the Rio Grande to blow off steam and I saw this HUGE Fishing Spider! It had beautiful orange red legs and when I waded too close, it dropped into the water and ran away! ON THE WATER!!! I was in awe! Haha 😂😅
I always they hate me, same as god?
