Absolutely crazy how they use/need a helicopter when filming because of the size of the waves and how fast these gladiators are moving. These dudes got balls
Living in Jersey, we don't get big waves. Well, big compared to Cali or Hawaii, but we do get some 10-15' swells. Usually in the winter when it's 20-40 degrees out and snowing. But I've gone out a few times when the waves were reaching 10-12' with a few rare sets hitting 15'. There was one time in particular where I was in the lineup and a huge set me in and we all had to paddle way out so we didn't get smacked. As I went up the face I had to ditch the board and swim through the lip but my board was sucked over the falls and the leash pulled me back over the falls too. It was one of the worst wipeouts I've ever had and I wasn't even standing or moving fast. The initial pull was rough and the drop was painful and it def knocked some air out of me. I was rolled and dragged and I truly thought I was gonna drown cuz I couldn't get up and didn't even know which way was up. Luckily the second wave was bigger and crashed further out so I wasn't held down again or smashed. So I can't even imagine what it's like to have the same thing happen at a place like jaws, Mavericks, Puerto Escondido, etc. If I had a gas vest I would def feel better but not by much. These dudes got huge balls
Came here after watching 'Take Every Wave: The Life of Laird Hamilton'. So amazing.
