I know these are AF but how’s your experience with manual focus on these lenses? I love the idea of having AF if I need it but I would like to mainly use MF
Obviously they're not as good as actual cine lenses for manual focusing but I manual focus quite a bit with them and have no issues. There is a manual focus adapter that goes in the front which apparently makes it a lot easier and accurate.
I think you forgot the most important detail. That there are contacts in front of the lens. This is not disclosed yet, but there is possibility they will introduce either electonic VND or at least VND you can turn using this contacts. Small chance for anamorphic adapter too. If eVND is true assumption this will be huge, cause you can turn any sony camera into FX6 (kinda).
I didn't want to mention it because I didn't want to speculate to much! Yes the contacts are for accessories but none have been mentioned yet. Like I said I literally had the lens for a day and will continue to test as much as I can! But yeah a vnd type device will be incredible!
As soon as I have time! September is my busiest month this year for weddings, so its either away filming or stuck in the office editing! I have plenty of footage with it which helps!
T-Stops (from the ASC Manual) are light transmission compensated “F/Stops”… it’s really handy as it means lens swaps at the same T-Stop will be the same but it also means the job of working out light transmission has been done and any light meter should now line up a lot better. For me it’s also a good indicator of how good the lens is… this is probably a F/1.8 aperture (in mechanical ratio size) so at T/1.9 very little is lost… pretty dam good. Interested in what comes next for this set and what adapter they have for those front contacts
Yeah but it really wasn't the video to get into details of what a t Vs f stop were. Haha. Yeah I know very little about the front contacts so didn't mention them, I didn't want to speculate and get it wrong!
@@JayGilmourMedia I just put the actual definition out there before people start saying “they’re more accurate F/Stops”… they’re not, it’s just good to see them on an auto focus lens, usually have to consult DPReview for that data
I would love to! Unfortunately I'm still in the middle of a busy wedding season! Hopefully more content to come later. If you do want to know anything specifically, feel free to message.
Very little to none from my very basic tests, certainly none I can see straight away. But probably need to set out some stricter perimeters to see for sure.
Cine lenses have focus breathing. If you want a lens completely without breathing you’d need to spend tens of thousands on arri lenses that zoom slightly to compensate for breathing
This is such a random questions as the video is about the Samyang lenses (which I think look awesome). Buuuut! I am looking for a vlock solution for my Atomos Ninja and I saw that you are using some sort of cable! What cable are you using for it and how are you powering it? :) Kind Regards Jørgen
So I have a core swx and moman v mount batteries. I use a d-tap to locking DC cable which connects to the power output connector you get with the ninja. Hope that makes sense. Feel free to message on Facebook or insta for more info 👍

What is about those contacts on the front of the lens. It’s like a second lens mount where it should be the lens filter…..
No. The idea is if you want a cine lens, and prefer manual you would move to the vdslr range. These slot into the gap between them and the photo lenses.
I have had this lens for a day before announcement so not much time to fully test. I'm using it at a wedding coming up so will be able to get into more detail then with a subsequent video. At time of writing this there is nothing released on pricing unfortunately.
Since the optics are based off of their photo lenses, isn't this just a photo lens with a cine label added to it? I guess having all the lenses using the same form factor is a big thing if you do a lot of gimble work, but I feel like the "first af cine lens" claim is sort of disingenuous on Samyang's part, unless I missed something... In other words, if I took a Sony photo lens, attached the rubber threads to a focus puller, would it then become an AF cine lens? By this definition yes, but obviously not in reality. The weight thing is cool though. I could see this being helpful for drones, gambles, and robotic camera systems.
I honestly couldn't go into the physicality of what makes a cine lens what makes a photo lens but it's certainly built different, focus breathing is practically zero, the focus throw is less. Cine lenses and photo lenses are different. So by definition you're incorrect when you say to just throw a rubber thread on it.
@@JayGilmourMedia Thanks for the response and it's good to know these things, I didn't mean any disrespect. Also, I'm glad there's more to it than just throwing a rubber thread! I was very confused by what exactly was meant by "cine af", since it's more expensive. @@rorycowieson5924 Or have a camera body with breathing compensation.
Which will not work here, since samyang is 3rd party lens :(.
No, no, and just no
Samyang XEEN lenses do not have focus breathing at all. But this one has. I think it’s size is too small not to have focus breathing.
I can’t wait to test these lenses out. Thank you for this review.
Is it a true manual focus ring with hard stops? Or just a linear response ring
Unfortunately no hard stops but unlike the new photo lenses the focus throw is a lot shorter.

For accessories, I didn't want to mention anything in this video as I didn't want to speculate, but there's a few things I'm hoping for!
Are you able to put a VND on the lens?
Yeah the thread is a little further in past the connections. It's a 58mm thread. You can see the threads at 1:04
want to buy this and use it for photo? i wish samyang makes a 20mm 1.8 tiny series though
I think there is a 20 or something coming in the new line up, I'm not 100% on that though!
No distance markings for manual focus? Is it a focus by wire?
No. The idea is if you want a cine lens, and prefer manual you would move to the vdslr range. These slot into the gap between them and the photo lenses.
