This is the best video that I have seen for annual maintenance on the Harman p68. I found the list of tools very helpful...great idea to use a paintbrush. Good job on the video, I’m new to pellet stoves and just bought a house with 2 of these Harman stoves in it. Watching your video gave me some much needed confidence, Thanks. I also liked and subbed. Great couple of helpers you have there.
@@DIYJIM Hi Jim. I have a question about the pellet stove. I had it installed in the basement and made the mistake of putting a smaller screen on the outside preventing it from getting the air supply , took it off and cleaned the pipe as far as I could go from both ends, I need to get a better brush to run it from end to end it worked better, but the smell was giving us headaches, so I shut it down until I figure out the problem ! I've been watching videos and reading up where it says to install a outside air intake, that this allows the carbon monoxide from building up , I believe that is part of the problem ! Do you recommend putting this in and do you think this will take care of this problem ? I'm also going to get a carbon monoxide detector that is recommended ! Thanks for your help !!
@@raymondhoagland4976 I have a cold air intake on mine it is right below the exhaust. I have never had a problem. It should actually run much more efficient with a cold air intake.
Great video. We have bats in the area. One year a bat made it all the way into the stove and died, leaving all kinds of debris in the stove pipe. So now I cover the stove pipe cap with a mesh metal screen. I remove it in the Fall.
It's supposed to be fairly warm tomorrow, so I'm going to do a good cleaning tomorrow. I hadn't used my P68 in two years, so this was a great refresher course for me, thanks. The only question I have is that I noticed that you don't have a Tee with Clean-Out Cap in your exhaust system. I was told that they are required by code for pellet stoves. Great and helpful video, brother!!
Not sure about that, I was not told when I installed. Maybe the code has changed, but not sure why you would need one. My stove works great without it. I only clean my exhaust with the brush once a year.
@@DIYJIM I'm not sure if it's a local, state, or national code. I also used a 90 at the back of my pellet stove for several years with no problems. An HVAC guy was at my house for an unrelated issue (to install a new duct for my central A/C) and told me this. He said something like this: Instead of ash accumulating in the elbow, it falls into the lower part of the tee. Also wood contains minerals in the ash that can be too heavy for the venting system to push up and out. Either they'll settle in the 90 or, even worse, they roll back into the stove when the blower is turned off. Either way, restricting airflow. IDK how true this all is, but it made sense to me and I replaced my 90 degree elbow with a tee and clean-out cap before the next heating season. I can tell you that, like you, I only clean my vent once a year, but I take the cap off and empty the ash two or three more times a season and there's usually at least an inch or two in there each time. I guess the theory is that heavier contaminants, via gravity, will settle in the lower part of the tee, thereby removing them from the exhaust system completely.
I had a St. Croix pellet stove for 18 years until a lightning strike took it out. I replaced it with a Harmon. I hate my P-68 pellet stove! I've had nothing but trouble with it and Harmon won't even give you tech support. It's a $4000.00 pos, but live and learn. I'm stuck with it for a while now. Thanks for the video! I appreciate it, brother!
Was your ST. Croix easy to clean and did you burn the same amount of pellets? Why did you not buy another one? Asking in case I ever want to change my stove.
@@DIYJIM I never had to do anything with my St. Croix for 3-4 weeks at a time, except pour bags of pellets in. There is an extended handle that scrapes the heat exchanger without opening the stove. The burn pot is self cleaning too. The bottom of the burn pot is about twice as large as it needs to be and moves, slowly (probably like the minute hand on a clock) back & forth cleaning and scraping the burn pot as it runs. Regular cleaning and yearly cleaning was MUCH easier. I definitely used about 20-25% less pellets in the St. Croix. The Harmon is definitely less efficient. I'll post my saga, as briefly as possible about my issues with my Harmon in the next post. BTW, you have great videos on your channel!!
@@DIYJIM OK, I decided to buy the Harman P68 because of good things I read on some forums. Many Harmon owners swear by them. So, when I get it home, I noticed that the standard pellet stove vent didn't fit the exhaust of the Harmon. I called the dealer where I purchased it (the only one within 150+ miles of me) and he told that they drill two holes, fill the gap with high temp silicone and use two self tapping screws. This just didn't seem right to me. After some research, I found that there are actually adapters for Harman stoves (to reduce the size for standard vents. Harman won't sell to the public, so I had to order it from the dealer, wait almost two weeks and drive 75 miles to pick it up. That solves my first problem, but my problems were just beginning. I decided to just put brand new 4" good quality venting and start new. I fired up the stove, and the odor of smoke was pretty bad. I checked my vent and all seemed fine. It was coming from the stove itself. Since the dealer didn't even know about the exhaust outlet, I called Harman directly for advice. They will not speak to customers directly and told me to call the dealer. They came out and told me I had to use 5" vent and they wouldn't warranty the stove unless they did it. $650.00 later, with the 5" they installed and said to wait 48 hours before using it. After firing up the stove, the odor of smoke was worse. They came back and fixed leaks at the joints and told me to wait 48 hours. Again, strong odor of smoke in my house. They came back out and said I needed a cold air intake. $450.00 later, I fired up my stove and....strong smoke. At this point I called Harman for help and, you guessed it, they wouldn't talk to me and referred me to the incompetent dealer. He came back out and changed the gasket, I waited 48 hours and again, my house was filled with strong smoke. Nearing the end of the winter, I gave up and figured that I would try to deal with it during the spring or summer. This is the end of part 1, but it gets better
Good work Jim. Very thorough and yes you are definitely helping me. Thanks. Do you have any tricks to limit the darkening of the glass as it needs cleaning quite often?
Exactly what I needed to see. We have the same stove and I have been cleaning it pretty well each year but I definitely learned a thing or two here that will help me do a better job this spring. Thank You!
Excellent video! I am in the market for a used stove now after my Home Depot Englander circuit board went bad. Found a P68 locally that I hope to buy for $1500 as I cannot test the stove. Hopefully not taking too much of a chance buying a used one.
My stove has been a good stove. If it is not to old and was taken care of should be a good deal. You might be able to plug it in and test it just to see if all the motors work.
Hey Jim, My distribution blower may not be running at full speed. I noticed that during the test function the d blower runs faster, but not so much during normal operation
If you are on face book join the (Harman pellet stove owners) group and put a video on there and ask that question. There are a lots of people that will help you.

Not trying to second guess, but I usually leave my vacuum hose running inside stove when cleaning instead of running stove fan. This keeps you from breathing any of the ash.

@@DIYJIM I love the idea of a video on the different pellets and maybe how efficient or the best ones for your buck. I know the Harmon can burn any type of pellet and supposedly efficiently, so it would be awesome a video about that and which you feel is the best. Thanks Jim !! - very helpful info -- working on our Harman P-68 right now --- replaced combustion fan motor and blade, and the pellet stove worked great for a few days - then stopped feeding pellets - so i replaced the auger motor - and several other smaller items -- the stove works now - for the most part -- keep getting an alternating 6 red lights and other times 5 red lights... So i am thinking i need to replace the upper and lower door gasket and since i have the item i will also replace the firepot gasket - hopefully then, the stove will run . If replacing these door gaskets and firepot gasket do not resolve the issues - i'm not sure where to go from there... (replace the controller board ?)
We have a Napoleon NPS45 A lot of the basic cleaning I do daily...or every other day. Cleaning the box, heat exchanger tubes and glass. The motor and convection blower I do every ton I burn. Bottom line is stove runs way better, And I don’t have that god awful mess you have at the end of the year. I clean the flue once a month...no big mess there either.
This was very helpful. Thank you! I thought having a deep clean would get my Harmon (same model) up and running this season but I keep getting 2 flashing lights. It will work through one cycle and then start flashing or it won't work at all. I even replaced the ESP. Any advice? My local dealer can't get here until probably January at this point and its getting cold. Thanks
Our pellet stove does not feed pellet correctly it is Harman P61 on test mode the feed screw only activat for 10 sec instead of 1 min also the fan are full speed all the time Is the control board bad? is there a way to check it?
Hi Jim Todd here again just curious what pipe cleaning brush kit ya bought for your pellet stove. I found one made from brush tech that looks very similar to yours I also have a 90 degree elbow to get past just curious did ya cut the plastic handle off so you could insert it in your drill or did it come like that
Hi got a question Jim just bought a pellet stove getting ready to hook it up soon . I am in the process of hooking the pipes up soon . I also have a basement set up a tee coming off off the the stove adapter then a 3 foot duravent attached to a 90 degree elbow then straight out the wall will another 3 foot peice then a cap. My question is do I need to high temp silicone every pipe. Some say yea some say no. I wanted to know what your thoughts are. Also were I come out the wall it's only about 2 ft to ground level for exhaust. Manuel says that's the minimum but wanted to see what your thoughts are. I was orginal gonna vent under a high deck but I'm afraid of gases causing moisture and rotting my deck out.
I did not use high temperature silicone on every connection I think the only spot I used it was the first connection coming off the stove. I agree I don’t think venting under your deck would be a good idea. Make sure you also meet your codes for where you live. Sounds like you are doing it correct, I think I’m about 3’ off the ground where my vent comes out
Ok thanks Jim I got one more question for ya when you switched from a wood stove to a pellet stove did you notice a difference in heat loss. I ran a wood stove for 15 years and I'm gonna try a pellet stove for the first time. My wood stove was a 50,000 btu and my pellet stove is made by king is has twin blowers and supposed to put out 48,000 btus

Brought it home and punched a hole in the wall for the flue and we haven’t looked back since During a typical winter, we will burn around 4 tons plus. So far no issues with it. But I’m glad to have found you so I can be prepared.
@@jbmaine Very glade i could help, i normaly would burn 3-4 tons but this year i am burning 2 tons because when it is around 30 deg or warmer i use my heat pump. If you are kind of handy you could put one in they are awesome for air conditioning also. amzn.to/2vWAdmd
Jim, I have been thinking about getting one actually and have watched a few videos on them and a lot of people up here in Maine are getting them especially for those warmer days during the heating season and for those hot hot days in the Summah.. 😁 Might be a new How to Video.....

Great video definitely helped me!!
Glad it helped! Thanks for the comment
Thanks this was very helpful.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for the comment it helps my channel
Can you recommend a pellet stove brush with a sturdy flexible attachment? I have a pipe that goes up about 7 or 8 feet before going through the wall. Thanks so much for any advice.
I think this one would work for you. amzn.to/3meVHoB Hope this helps
@@DIYJIM Yup, thanks for your help. This looks just right~
Very, very well done sir. Thank you! Peace.
Thank you hope it helps or gave you a couple pointers
I am having a Harmon P43 installed tomorrow and your video helped me a lot to prepare and know how to maintain my new stove.
Also I would like to know how your corn burning goes and if it would cause any issues to the stove.
Thanks for the comment, and thanks for subscribing if you did. I can not always see who subscribes, it really helps my channel.
@@DIYJIM I in fact did subscribe Haha. Your videos are very informative...I kinda binge watched almost all the stove videos and shared them with my husband haha. Keep up the great content :)
awesome thanks hope my videos help you out
@@crimsnbetrayal if you think of another video i could make of the harman let me know i think i kind of ran out what to do, until something breaks. I am going to do one one different pellets when it gets colder
@@DIYJIM I love the idea of a video on the different pellets and maybe how efficient or the best ones for your buck. I know the Harmon can burn any type of pellet and supposedly efficiently, so it would be awesome a video about that and which you feel is the best.
Your videos answered all my questions about "what to do if" , like the fuse, ignition, window seal and thermostat.haha
Do you ever put anything on the pellets to help keep the dust down in the house that gets air borne when dumping bags into the hopper?
No I have never done that, the dust does not seem that bad
Have you ever have the smoke smell like burning plastic.I have a Harman p43 .I am using Logistics premium plus.I have watched your videos on how to clean my stove I want to say Thank You I clean my stove every week,so it's not to much for me.Then once a year I have it serviced any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have never had a plastic smell. Did you try different pellets?
helped a lot thanks.
Glad it helped
Good luck I have not had to replace any motors yet. Hope everything goes good
@@DIYJIM - aye - Thanks - will let you know what happens...
Nice video. Thank you.
Glad you like hope it helps you
We have a Napoleon NPS45 A lot of the basic cleaning I do daily...or every other day. Cleaning the box, heat exchanger tubes and glass. The motor and convection blower I do every ton I burn. Bottom line is stove runs way better,
And I don’t have that god awful mess you have at the end of the year. I clean the flue once a month...no big mess there either.
Sounds like you really take care of your stove should last a long time. Merry Christmas and happy new year
What setting do you use for feed rate?
I have a video on how i set my stove, setting 4. Plus 13 others th-cam.com/video/TbTDxnr_4A0/w-d-xo.html
Thanks
Are you on Facebook if so join the Harman Facebook page. You can post videos and will get a bunch of answers. Sorry I can not help
Our pellet stove does not feed pellet correctly it is Harman P61 on test mode the feed screw only activat for 10 sec instead of 1 min also the fan are full speed all the time Is the control board bad? is there a way to check it?
Sorry I’m not sure never had that problem. Let me know if you get it figured out. Thanks for watching
How did the corn go?
Bad very very dirty
Hi Jim Todd here again just curious what pipe cleaning brush kit ya bought for your pellet stove. I found one made from brush tech that looks very similar to yours I also have a 90 degree elbow to get past just curious did ya cut the plastic handle off so you could insert it in your drill or did it come like that
3' flue brush and rods amzn.to/33N78q5 I think this one is just like the one i used in my video hope this helps
Ok thanks alot Jim I'll check out the Amazon link
I think I bout the one I have from lowes
Ok thanks Jim I'll check out lowes also
Hi got a question Jim just bought a pellet stove getting ready to hook it up soon .
@@toddswatsworth4118 definitely no, but I do spend a lot more money on fuel. When I Burnt wood I used to get a lot of free wood.
Ok Jim thanks for getting back to me I greatly appreciate it. Keep up the great videos they are very helpful and thanks again.
Great Job and thanks for all the Great Info!!!
thank you, and thank you for subscribing hope you stove gives you many good years of warmth
DIY with JIM , I bought my P68 about 7 years ago used, and it was already 5 yrs or so old.
Brought it home and punched a hole in the wall for the flue and we haven’t looked back since
During a typical winter, we will burn around 4 tons plus.
Might be a new How to Video.....
Mainah114 I would do another how to video on the mr cool heat pump but I already have three. One in my bedroom one in my living room and one in my basement family room. I paid $6000 for my 3. I think I would have went with the mr cool diy and did it my self it would have saved me $2000 and I would have had three separate units. That would be nice in the summer because I could run two on cool and one on dehumidifier mode. If you do get one use my link on my video it helps me out. I can find you the couple videos I watched on TH-cam about the mr cool heat pump.
Great Vid ! Thank you for your help !!! ;)
Glad it helped!
