Do u know what happened the day he died? His song Edmond Fitz which was true included the line "In the maritime sailors cathedral" is real place even today. Once a year the descendants of those sailors journey down and ring that bell. The day this man died, they walked down again and rang that bell for him.
30 times. 😊
…and I cried.
From 1975 until the Day Gordon Lightfoot died, they rang the bell 29 times...30 times on the day he died.
@@Fred-vy1hmincluding Gordon made 30.
Yep they rang the bell thirty times.
This is one of my favorite songs and one of my favorite artists. The late Mr. Lightfoot wrote it to his wife that he was getting a divorce from and trying to explain why. He had fallen out of love with her and wanted to end the marriage. Sundown was a story about the woman he was seeing after his divorce who he couldn’t trust. It’s a great song even without the backstory. His most famous song was The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald a sad but wonderful song. Unfortunately, Mr. Lightfoot passed away on May 1, 2023.
Thank you for taking the time to explain the context of this great song, much appreciated!
no. Gordon had certainly not fallen out of love.
"cold on the shoulder..Your love belongs to us"
"Same old Obsession... someone is weeping"
"if children had wings... my love still goes on"
the feeling he can't get back is her lost feelings for him not the other way around.
"heroes often fail" is such a great line.
My favorite..So, hauntingly beautiful and heartbreaking
So is his song Beautiful. 👍
As a 80's kid, loves metal, goth, industrial, punk, I freakin love this song! took my wife to see Gordon a few years ago, and so glad I had a chance to see this genius live. RIP Gordon, you were amazing, and this song is so so powerful and great
This is one of Gordon’s most personal songs, about the breakup of his first marriage………Warning!! GORDON LIGHTFOOT IS ADDICTIVE!! He has a never ending rabbit hole. One of Bob Dylan’s favourite songwriters. Has been covered by a who’s who of artists…..Elvis, Johnny Cash, Barbra Streisand and more!! ENJOY!
A Canadian legend.
The guitar work is incredible in his songs.
One of the greatest artists…..such a beautiful piece! 😊
Gordon is one of the greatest story reller ever, listen to his greatest hits
I hope you eventually listened to this on a good recording. You are missing both vocal and musical nuance with this recording. Glad you enjoyed what you could hear. Gordon was a pure treasure.
Folk music's GOAT.
Gordon Lightfoot was the premier storyteller/songwriter/singer of my generation and is a true national treasure in Canada. Do take the chance to listen to more of his music. It's a wonderful adventure.
RIP Gordo... highly recommend the following Lightfoot selections: Carefree Highway, Rainy Day People, Beautiful, and Sundown for max easy listening. His masterpiece, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is legend. ❤
for non east listening ,"endless wire," "too many clues" black day in July" ballad of Yarmouth Castle"
The Woman that broke his heart brought out the best in Gordan's music. His pain had shown brightly in his lyrics. He was a wonderful writer and human being. Try Gordan's "Railroad Trilogy".
Beautiful, On a Winter's Night, and so many other older songs are my favorites.... ❤❤
Lightfoot's Canadian and this is the song that enabled him to break into the American market only when a Seattle dj discovered it on an album, started playing it and his audience really loved it. The single had never been pushed and the album had mostly been ignored on store record shelves.
Thanks for the extra information - much appreciated!
Lightfoot broke into US market when Peter Paul and Mary recorded his brilliant "Early Morning Rain" in the late 60s as far as I'm concerned. I admire his lyrics as much as his singing.
Makes me cry every time
Harry Chapin called his songs "Story Songs" as they all told stories. The most famous were "Cat's in the Cradle" and "Taxi"
I was a young impressionable girl when this came out - still love it 50+ years later.
You're off to a good start! Just relax and be yourself. Recommend all of Gordon Lightfoot! Also Recommend joni Mitchell as well. She's like a female Gordon Lightfoot, who also happened to be a friend of hers.
Check out Rick Beato’s podcast tribute to Gordon and his breakdown of this song. Lightfoot is a marvelous songwriter, guitar player and singer when he was on his prime (1965-1976).
Picture it, America, February 1971. And playing on the radio, "If You Could Read My Mind" by Gordon Lightfoot. Priceless..
Your friend did you a nice favor recommending this. I grew up on this music, and Lightfoot was a legend in his own right. It was okay for us to have ballads and story songs back then. No corporation was controlling the artistic process. You or your manager pitched your songs to radio DJs. Back when people listened to radio, if the response was good, they played your music more often. The audience decided what was best, not a suit in an office in some city far away.
Thanks for your comment - you're so right! It was all about the music in those days. Now it's all about profit and most music you hear in the charts sounds soulless.
.and they actually played the music with real instruments!
look up his live Germany or Los Angeles concert. BBC has a full concert from 1971
Someone else probably mentioned it already but his daughter, who was about 12 at the time, helped him write this, and managed to make the song far less impact full and less mean.
There is no longer love,But the chains upon his feet.Is the piece of his heart left behind.
One of my all time favorite songs. Still hear it to this day.
The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald. One of the best songs ever written. It's a lyrical masterpiece. A once-in-a-century work written by a master bard.
Gordon Lightfoot was an amazing singer songwriter, this song as well as Sundown and The Wreak of the Edmund Fitzgerald are among the greatest classics of all time, he could brilliantly tell stories in a beautiful and melodic way.
My favorite Gordon song!
Ah! Canada! Gordon Lightfoot and Ann Murray "Snow Bird."
He used to perform in Toronto's Massey Hall. Always amazing live!
Quintessential storyteller...
Probably Canada's greatest gift to the USA.
Beautiful song
I suppose you never heard of Jim Crocce's "Time in a Bottle" either.
No, I haven't - thanks for the recommendation!
Loved him immediately when I just a kid in the 7th grade.
Thank you for making this my most popular video! Stay tuned because there's another Gordon Lightfoot song coming in the new year - and it's one that hasn't been reacted to before! So sub and bell so you don't miss out!
I got to meet him in '75. Somewhere is a picture of us together. Jr was extremely nice and down to earth. I was just a child.
I typed, him, not JR.
Can't edit anymore, even if the software messes with my words.
He not him. That was my fault.
Recommendations: Sundown, Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald are among his more popular.
Grew up listening to Gordon. My favorite songwriter and the man. Rest in love, Gordon. 💔🌠🌻💙
He was a great singer and song writer, they broke the mould when they made him. Check out the pinned comment for another Gordon Lightfoot video.
Theme from Midnight Cowboy 1969
Harry Nilsson- Everybody's Talking - Midnight Cowboy
Soundtrack - Midnight Cowboy (1969). Amazing!
Thanks for the suggestion!
The arrangement is absolutely beautiful. He wrote this song when he left his wife for what was essentially a drug pusher/groupie/monster. The same woman who gave John Belushi his fatal drug overdose. The song is beautiful, though.
Yikes!
My favorite song by him. The lyrics resonate with life
Check out Gordon Lightfoot's Canadian Railroad Trilogy, commissioned by the Canadian government for Canada's 100th birthday in 1967. It's not new, but is one of Lightfoot's best.
I play three songs by Gordon's songs " If you could read my mind" "Sundown". And. "The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" fun songs to play!! Have a great day!
It's a very sad song and a very beautiful song. Gordon was a bit special. And his lyrics are stunning.
I am an old timer here and am loving your comments on one of my fave artists 🙂
Thanks! Feel free to explore the rest of the channel.
As a Gen Xer myself, I remember loving this song since I was a kid, playing the heavily scratched single on our record player. My older siblings had played it to death, and yet I still loved what remained.
Definitely check out his Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. He is a master storyteller, and while Sundown went to #1, WEF is his most famous song - and rightly so. One of the most haunting songs ever.
Gen X here too, and I love him so much.
This is a lovely song. I bought it in the 70's, or 80's and played the album over and over.
Beautiful song. Thank you for this.
You're welcome!
Hopefully You've heard The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by now...:)...I was a teen in the 70's...I feel blessed to have Heard Gordon's works for half a century and thousands of times...They just get better with time too! :)
It's depressing as hell. Beautiful and painful . Just leaves me sad.
Check out his Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, for peerless story-telling.
In a musty old Hall cheers brother thank you for that input
Check out The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald. Probably Gord's best known work. Amazing! (Like all of his songs!)
Rainy Day People-We find each other!
He should be in Rock & Roll HOF !
I read somewhere that the girl he didn't trust was the one partying with John Belishi who gave John the Speedball that killed.him.
I look forward to more reactions from you. Anything by Lightfoot is good. If you want to stand out among music reactors do a reactions to Gordon Lightfoot Cotton Jenny. You'll be the first. Joni Mitchell is will also take your breath away. A Case of You or Both Sides Now. Don't give up. You did good.
Thanks for the encouragement!
Incredible Great Song!!!
There is very little new music, time to go back in time to the beginning in Grenwich Village where " it" all started.
FRED NEIL IS A PERFECT STARTING POINT, he will lead you to Dylan, Perer Paul and Mary, CSNY, Richy Havens.... Start at the beginning for a ride that only musicians can decribe.
You want a suggestion for a beautiful song about a love affair? Listen to Midnight Blue by Melissa Manchester. It was a hit in the mid/late 70s. Beautiful song.
Listen to Lightfoot’s, Too Late For Prayin’, and Shadows. There is a treasure trove of brilliant Lightfoot music largely undiscovered by many at large!
My guilty pleasure is (Do) The Hucklebuck by Coast to Coast. The first single I bought as a 10yr old. The fast pace matched my youthful energy, and I liked to sing along! It reached no. 5 in the UK singles chart in 1981.
brendan boyer ... do the huclke buck
Ever wonder how Canadians got their reputation of being mellow folks? Gordon had a lot to do with that.
1 of my faves
You should listen to Sundown. Its a little lighter musically anyway, yet a great story.
Going reaction...keep reaching back. Looking forward to more reactions. Try to get the music blended with the voice if you can. Almost ready to subscribe.
Hey man check out blue October! Best modern day story teller you’ll find! Try feel again or light you up or almost anything by them!
Try to listen to Happy Chapin
Ray Lamontagne - Empty
You want to hear a good story telling song listen to Juan Gabriel in Spanish with subtitles song called AMOR ETERNO. I doubt you'll listen to it anyways.
I truly hope you will listen to Gordon Lightfoot’s The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (be sure to use the lyric video) which is arguably his greatest hit. Gordon was an incredible songwriter/storyteller and any of songs are worth a listen. I was a teenager/young adult when he was at the peak of his career and his music always touched me.
No one today spins a tale like Gordon Lightfoot. Taylor Swift comes close, but there is no one like Gordon.
Every react is If You Could Read My Mind or Edmund Fitzgerald. Where is the great Black Day in July?
Or Don Quixote?
Great
It doesn’t say Canadian but you can smell it 😂
Alpha male genius
Gordon Lightfoot used to tell stories That's what his music is about but you going down the rabbit hole
Dude looks like a young Hanz Landa
I will forgive you that you have never heard this before, despite being genX because you are not Canadian.
Please do the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Try John Smith, Save my life.... A masterpiece you'll love it
Are you listening on a cassette player recorded off an AM radio?
Sprit in the sky by gorden Lightfoot. Try it.
For amazing songwriting today, my go to has to be The Mountain Goats.
Any song in particular?
They have a bit of an overwhelming discography, which I am still working through myself. From their low-fi period I highly recommend All Hail West Texas as a whole album. As for more polished albums I would recommend either The Sunset Tree, or Tallahassee.
A good choice from one of his classic albums. Gordon Lightfoot is 84 years old and still performing today.
Is he? Because according to Wikipedia he died earlier this year. I didn’t fact check, to be fair.

Gordon passed away May 1st, 2023
@@shaynelachance8828 I was corrected on that, but he had continued to perform doing the casino circuits right to the end.
I know nothing about new music. Might I suggest a compare and contrast between old music and new music.
Odd it’s such a mellow song because it’s about a painful divorce.
Iisten to Miguel by Lightfoot!
Is the audio bad?
I hope you choose a higher quality track for your play list. This seems kind of mushy, not clear. 😊
Music quality is way off. Old album?
Sorry about the music quality, it is an old album.
@@sofareacts76 Did you play an actual vinyl disk? Otherwise there are copies of the recordings that don't have these issues.
@@steveullrich7737 I'm sorry about the sound issues. I think it's Stream Yard rather than the video, but I'm trying to fix it.
Something a little off with the recording…
Sorry - storytelling died in the ‘80’s…
Al Stewart is still out there doing it.
Sorry audio is unlistenable
Sorry about that. It's one of my earlier videos when I was still learning. I have since uploaded another Gordon Lightfoot video where the sound is a lot better. See the pinned comment.
Thx
Poor audio
I know, sorry, but this was an early video when I was still figuring stuff out. I have since delt with the audio issues and in the new year, I plan to react to another song by Gordon Lightfoot so stay tuned!
Your audio is messed up volume is in & out sounds like a warped vinyl album 🦻😢😢😢
I'm sorry about the sound issues on this video. It was one of my first videos and I was still learning. But I've figured it out and now my videos sound a lot better.
lousy recording ... shouldnt sound like a tin can & choppy .... amazing song
