Steve, Logan Stanley was their 2016 1st they got from Chicago when they reacquired Andrew Ladd. The 2017 first they got in this deal was Kristian Vesalainen.
The Jets actually traded the pick they got from Chicago to move up to take Stanley. They traded with Philadelphia to move up in the draft from 22nd to 18th.
Good idea but unfortunately Sportsnet won’t do a trade that doesn’t involve a Canadian team in some way. Seriously. Check the playlist. The closest one is the Lindros Tree and this one
@@quasimoto7662 I wish they would do more that aren’t just with Canadian teams, but they did a couple with the Jeff Carter, Rick Nash, and Joe Thornton videos. But yeah definitely need more American teams.
It's funny looking back on this video that the draft pick on the Rangers side of the tree was moved to Dallas for Detroit to move up in the 21 draft. Grushnikov was traded for Chris Tanev and after trading down the Stars took Wyatt Johnston.
It's me, I'm the fan passionate about the Thrashers history as Jets history (cause it is!). Thrashers ownership sure was... Questionable. Sigh. I'm happy the franchise has a good home and I'm happy I went north with the team.
Trade tree is actually well detailed until That last part, LIKE LITERALLY LAST PART. Jets are one the best in drafting in 1st round (most of their picks are actually good), but Logan Stanley is a 2016 draftee and 2017 Jets drafted vesalainen. Even jets fan are aware those are the 2 most disappointing 1st round picks of their team yet. But Logan Stanley could be a effective late bloomer, and vesalainen probably have this year as his last chance.
I used to be a Thrashers fan; ironic given that I live in Calgary, the city that took their _first_ team away from them. But they had a great young offensive core in Kovalchuk, Heatley and (former Flame) Marc Savard, they had a baby blue alternate/home jersey that looked just gorgeous, and they had a goalie in Kari Lehtonen who'd put geeky stuff like Final Fantasy characters on his mask. What's not to like? Unfortunately, I think Heatley's little accident did more to damage that franchise than I think people fully comprehend, to say nothing of their ownership group's internal squabbles that led to them just ignoring the team altogether... The crazy thing is, I still think Atlanta could work as a hockey market, they just need to be given a *real* chance for once; I just realize that with -Philips- State Farm Arena's renovation into a basketball-only arena, _and_ with ATL behind in the count 0-2 already, that's not likely to ever happen again. Shame... Ah well; as it happens I kept cheering for the team even after the move, the Jets are my 3rd-favourite team now, behind the Flames and Canucks. :P
Honestly if the team had better ownership they could have survived, having 7 owners who can't seem to agree on anything except 1) the Hawks are the priority and 2) they hate each other really really really hurts a team that's about a decade old and has won nothing.
The Thrashers were acquired by Atlanta Spirit Inc. from their previous owners in a package deal with the Atlanta Hawks, but they didn't want the Thrashers. They only cared about the Hawks, so they horribly mismanaged the Thrashers. Legendary goaltender Dan Bouchard helped out with goalie coaching, and he said that the Thrashers GM informed him that he was only needed once a month, and that "goaltending wasn't important." Atlanta has a massive hockey market and TONS of rinks and leagues. Please for the love of God give us our team back
Sounds a lot like the Pegulas who mismanaged the Sabres for the past few seasons while at the same time, are reveling in the success of the Bills. Or the owner who cares more about the New York Rangers than he does about the Knicks.
I did hear one time that originally they wanted Winnipeg to be an expansion and not a relocation of Atlanta, but it never worked out and thus Atlanta sadly lost their team.
A nice trade to look into I think is Philly sending Mike Richards to the Kings for Simmons and Schenn a nice little trade with some names that immediately helped the kings win the Stanley cup in 2012
That trade also eventually turned into Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost for the Flyers. Out of Mike Richards, the Flyers got atleast 3 core pieces across 2 hockey generations.
Thanks for the "We forget a fanbase lost their team." As an Alabamian, I have only split my Red Wings loyalty when the Thrashers existed. I was even a minor Jets fan after the move until their media and fans kept giving Thrashers fans the middle finger. The retro jersey being devoid of any little nod was the final straw. Winnipeg can lose every game from now on for all I care. I don't know why you would want to throw away potential fans (i.e. merchandise dollars), but the franchise, fans, and media all decided it was for the best. So, screw them.
I'd recommend how Anaheim trading Teemu Selanne to San Jose got them Corey Perry and Rob Niedermayer. While it's not directly linked to the trade tree, when Scott Niedermayer signed later, he explicitly mentioned wanting to win a cup with his brother, so interesting footnote to the tree. Whole thing started as seeing if Winnipeg/Phoenix got anything out of the trade, and the only interesting thing was Oleg Tverdovsky being traded from Anaheim to Winnipeg as part of the deal, then getting traded back to Anaheim, then getting traded WITH Teemu this time.
The Ron Francis PIT-HFD trade in '91 is an absolute monster. Parts of that tree helped Pittsburgh draft Fleury 12 years later, helped bring Rod Brind'Amour to Carolina, and played (an admittedly) minor role in the Shanahan-Pronger trade in 95. You'd probably need to make a feature-length documentary to cover the whole thing, but it's pretty wild.
Hey Steve, a while ago you took a request and did the Jeff Carter trade tree. Even though how the pick used to select Carter wasn't explained (gotten in the Daymond Langkow deal with Pheonix, before that Langkow was aquired by PHI and Mikael Renberg), it was very entertaining. Now I propose: How the Mike Richards trade to LA lead to a Blues Stanley cup or something like that. Thank you!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Robert Bortuzzo (the 2007 3rd rounder) flipped from Pittsburgh to the Blues in 2015 for Ian Cole, then winning a Cup with the 'Note in 2019. Am I missing some other aspect of that branch feeling incomplete?
You gotta go back and do the daymond langkow tree for the flyers. It can technically start earlier in the mid 90s with mike sillinger. It is still active today
Staal was pretty serviceable last season paired with Troy Stecher. When the Wings resigned him for $2M, I was OK with that. Yzerman was paid a pick to take on a garbage contract, at zero cost to him, as he had cap space for miles and expected a dismal season. Sound asset management. Add to that, he managed to squeeze some good value on the ice from the year of that contract, and then resigned a solid veteran at a significant discount. More good asset management. After fleecing Washington for Vrana and a first round pick in the Mantha trade, things got interesting. At the time of the trade, most would have expected that first round pick to be around 30th. because how are the Caps not going to make the ECF? They are a wagon, right? Wrong. Their first round exit bumped that pick all the way up to 23rd. Moving up 8 spots from 30th to 22nd really isn't that much of a value increase in terms of the players available (usually). A club isn't often going to pay to do that. However, if you can move up 8 spaces and be in the top half of the first round, that can really get you a great player. So he then flipped that Staal pick with the Caps first rounder to trade up in round one and snag Sebastian Cossa, who could become a significant asset in goal. He also had to trade a third pick to move up, but all three picks were picks that he traded to acquire. He made sure to keep all of the Wings picks, as they were the highest picks in every round. Even on the micro level, his asset management is solid. I would normally say, "Who is this guy?", but I already know. IN THE YZERPLAN WE TRUST.
Steve you forgot that Winnipeg turned in the draft rights for Leveille to the league and were given the same pick in the following draft but one round later (2013 59th) which they used for the new backup goalie Eric Comrie so I think that should be a branch also. Do not believe you can still return 1st rounders and get compensated with a second anymore so i am sure thats why you probably missed it.
Dangle, you HAVE to look at the deal that sent Brendan Shanahan from St. Louis to Hartford in the early 90's. Not only does it involve a few future Hall of Famers, but it eventually leads to St. Louis drafting Jordan Binnington, who was a key part of the Blues' first Stanley Cup. Please look at this tree!
Speaking of Staal brothers, could we get an episode on the Jordan Staal trade tree? I've worked out a few trees from the last 10 years or so and the Jordan Staal tree is *so much bigger* than I thought it would be! That one was a really interesting deep dive.
If someone gets taken from the expansion draft we should include the next most valuable player in line for the trade tree, as technically that player would have been gone if they traded the player who did got taken prior.
sorry im a spitfires fan and logan stanley played for them he was drafted 18th overall in 2016 just had to let you know not trying to be rude who they took at 24th in 2017 is Kristian Vesalainen who was a very good pick at 24th

Wanna feel worse Thrashers fans? They originally had the 8th overall pick before trading down with the Sharks to 12. Now the 8th pick was Devin Setoguchi. Not bad, had a 30 goal and 60 point season in 08-09. But 11th overall was the real prize they missed. Anze Kopitar. As a Kings fan, I thank you and all of the other 9 (I don't count Pittsburgh cause Crosby) for passing on him
I hate criticizing videos that I enjoy, but I'm just going to throw it out there, I'm not a fan of the little rock track in the background. It's not that the music itself is bad, it just sounds like you're contending with the audio track, and I prefer the old subtle background music. Great video as always, I'll watch them either way.
The Cam Neely Trade Tree (if you ever do it) would have to be one of the WORST trades in history because it starts with Boston GETTING Cam and a FIRST ROUNDER for Barry Pederson! The first rounder BTW would be THIRD overall. And it just goes from there. It's not long but yeah....that one doesn't go so well for Vancouver.
This tree starts BEFORE this with the Thrashers sending the 8th overall pick to the Sharks for the 12th pick, the 49th pick, and the 207th pick. The 8th overall pick? Devin Setoguchi. If that name doesn't ring a bell don't worry.....he was dealt AWAY from the Sharks to the Wild.....if you're a fan of either team you know that trade.....BRENT BURNS!
It's bonkers that this is titled the Marc Staal Trade Tree when in reality its the Devin Setoguchi circle, here we go; when the dust settled on the 2005 draft lottery ATL had the 8th overall pick, San Jose had the 12th and NYR had the 16th. Firstly, San Jose sent picks 12, 49 and 207 for pick number 8 (Devin Setoguchi). All the stuff in the video for WPG/NYR holds true but if we follow Setoguchi then he and Charlie Coyle and a 1st rd pick in 2011 get traded from SJ to MIN for Brent Burns and a 2nd rd pick in 2012. Setoguchi spends 2 years in MIN before being shipped to, you guessed it, WPG for a 2nd rd pick in 2014. The second round picks ended up being Pontus Aberg and Vitek Vanecek, both of whom were also traded thus creating even more branches. Would've made a much better video in my opinion.
You would think brothers would lay off each other? I'm not saying Eric shouldn't have hit Marc but Eric hit him pretty hard, I mean that was a good hard clean hit but, c'mon man it's your brother..smh, lol... Of course the Lindros brothers fought once - Eric and Brett, lol... Interestingly enough I don't recall the Sutter brothers ever getting into it with each other, and when you consider the type of blue collar game they played that's pretty crazy.. I mean I'm a Hawks fan and all of them played for the Hawks except for Brian, he was the Hawks coach tho..
Steve, Ondrej Pavelec was an AWFUL goaltender! 22-16-8 = 24 games he lost, 8 in OT/Shootout. Even his .920 season he was only good against the WORST teams in the NHL, and went 3 months... THREE MONTHS, without beating a single team who ended up making the playoffs! I know that stat because I had to tell people how bad he REALLY was!
So Atlanta had bad management that traded away good players for crappy players, hmmm kinda reminds me of the Calgary Flames in the 90s LOL not to mention the Flames sucked at drafting as well(Rico Fata and Daniel Tkaczuk, both 6th overall picks come to mind) I'm glad the Thrashers got better after they came back to Winnipeg at least
Horrible ownership never gave them a chance, they can’t put it together on the ice the fans won’t show up also a factor but that starts at the top. The coyotes are going to Texas but a good group could make Atlanta work
"Why didn't Hockey work in Atlanta?" Maybe because it is in Georgia? With the exception of Florida and Texas, there are 8 states in a row, from south Carolina, to New Mexico that don't have an NHL team. Why? because those are some really hot states, New Mexico is mostly desert. To be honest I'm surprised that Arizona has been able to hold on to an NHL team for this long.
I think the only reason they didn't move around the same time the Thrashers did is because Gary Bettman really wants an excuse to to go Phoenix for work.
and this is where Steve falls down on things, The pick he is talking about, started the day in San Jose. Not Atlanta. Thrashers traded their 8th to san jose for the 12th, a 2nd and 7th and when they flipped the pick they got the 1st and a 2nd. So by trading down twice they screwed the pooch. Who did the thrashers get? Alex Bourret, Ondrej Pavelec, Chad Denny, and Myles Stoesz. Now that is bad
Penguins traded Markus Naslund for like nothing. Curious if they (Pens) got anything that led to their good fortune out of that or if it really was all one sided.
Steve, Logan Stanley was their 2016 1st they got from Chicago when they reacquired Andrew Ladd. The 2017 first they got in this deal was Kristian Vesalainen.

It was a side deal so that Vegas wouldn’t take Toby enstrom
@@kylesigfusson1174 thank you for clarifying that 🙂
I comment this on a lot of Trade Tree videos, but do the Dan Boyle Trade Tree!!! It's a complained one that ends in Andrei Vasilevskiy
I wonder if the Steve Downie trade out of Tampa is connected to any trade tree...
The reason the Thrashers didn't work out is because the ownership kind of hung the front office out to dry and their drafting was atrocious.
Make a sandis ozolinsh trade tree!!!! Will not disappoint!!
So Atlanta had bad management that traded away good players for crappy players, hmmm kinda reminds me of the Calgary Flames in the 90s LOL not to mention the Flames sucked at drafting as well(Rico Fata and Daniel Tkaczuk, both 6th overall picks come to mind) I'm glad the Thrashers got better after they came back to Winnipeg at least
anyone else completely forget that E. Staal was a Ranger??
Horrible ownership never gave them a chance, they can’t put it together on the ice the fans won’t show up also a factor but that starts at the top. The coyotes are going to Texas but a good group could make Atlanta work
I'm so glad someone else knows the kickass and chew bubblegum phrase haha thanks Steve!
"Why didn't Hockey work in Atlanta?"
Maybe because it is in Georgia? With the exception of Florida and Texas, there are 8 states in a row, from south Carolina, to New Mexico that don't have an NHL team. Why? because those are some really hot states, New Mexico is mostly desert. To be honest I'm surprised that Arizona has been able to hold on to an NHL team for this long.
I think the only reason they didn't move around the same time the Thrashers did is because Gary Bettman really wants an excuse to to go Phoenix for work.
You guys should do the pat LaFontaine trade tree
This is one I could get behind
Stanley was protected and will probably be on the third pairing with Demelo to start the season
and this is where Steve falls down on things, The pick he is talking about, started the day in San Jose.

I'M LEARNING
Steve you should do the tuukka rask trade tree🤣🤣
Sandis Ozolinsh and Owen Nolan

Do the Tukka rask trade tree
When he said you guessed it for the dupis (sorry for spelling) I thought he was gunna say rangers again
