I watched a show on the History channel about the P-38 earlier this year, showing pictures of McGuire and lindbergh next to each other but never once mentioning McGuire. Pissed me off

Thank you. He is a New Jersey native and has an airforce base named after him.

Sounds like he wasn't shot down; he downed himself.

McGuire and his colleague P-38 were shot down by an old Japanese army fighter (Hayabusa) operated by a Japanese ace pilot. Hayabusa operated by another Japanese ace pilot also shot down and killed the US ace pilot, Neel Ernest Kear in his P-47 in March 1944.

McGuire wasn't shot down. He performed a dangerous maneuver at low altitude, at too low a speed, and with auxiliary fuel tanks still attached. He lost control and crashed.
Neel Kearby was shot down trying to dogfight at slow speed with an otherwise inferior Ki 43 Oscar. He managed to bail out but was killed when another jap pilot shot him while he was still in his parachute.
