  • Elizabeth Comer is the President of Catoctin Furnace Historical Society, Inc. and an Archaeologist by training. The Catoctin Furnace is a Historic Iron Forge and Industrial Village located within Frederick County that had highly skilled enslaved and free laborers. The Forge was owned by the Johnson Brothers, one of whom was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the first Governor of Maryland. The Johnsons provided Cannonballs and Cannons for the Revolutionary War, and were major contributors to the foundation of the United States.
The Catoctin Furnace Historical Society, Inc. commemorates, studies, and preserves the rich history of this historic industrial village, including the architecture, cultural landscapes, lifeways and foodways of the enslaved Africans, free African Americans, and European immigrant laborers and families.
InSpired is a 1-hour nationally broadcast PBS documentary about Frederick Maryland. While in production, we will be posting filming updates, historic photographs, and interview snippets (like this!). We have interviewed over 50 people for our documentary for the purpose of capturing the entirety of Frederick City and County. With over 50 hours of interviews that will not make it into the 1 hour documentary, we occasionally cut snippets of those interviews for people interested in Frederick. So make sure you are following so you don't miss anything!
