Removing the Lock Cylinder From a Holden HZ (HQ-WB Too?)

- Getting the lock cylinder, or key barrel, out of the steering column on a Holden HZ isn't obvious... and it's probably the same for HQ through to WB models too. I found only 3 tiny clues on the internet for how to do it, but pieced them together to get it done on Trixie, my HZ one tonner. So, I thought I'd share it with you, in case you need to change your lock cylinder as some point too.

It’s great that people like yourself share this info, someone somewhere will be wondering how to do this, if not today, 5 yrs into the future even. Might apply to many makes as well.
I just cut out a large piece of the firewall this weekend, where it overlaps near the drain hose. I noticed rust along the seam and as I peeled it back I found it was thick with crusty rust between the two layers. Followed it til it stopped and put some new metal back into it. I reckon they overlapped it in the day and only sprayed what was visible with primer. Glad it’s done as this would have come through the firewall and into the cab one day, you wouldn’t know it’s there except for the seam showing a trace. The metal is thick so it had a few years yet but I don’t fancy pulling it all apart again!
What a good but bad discovery... now I'll have to check Trixie's firewall more closely! And Scotty (husband) is battling through hidden rust is his Torana's plenum too.
But you got it done and can move forward. Great hearing your progress Spyder.
Great video Stace. Thanks for taking the time to make this, I've learned something new for when I do reco my steering column too. Thank you 👏
Thanks! Have fun when you do the reco. It might be time consuming, but satisfying.
Great bit of info. Thanks for providing this Stace, it will save heaps of people time and frustration. Also enjoyed your episode about removing the windscreen. Love your channel🙂
Stuart thanks for hanging around. I know the tonner videos are not frequent enough but you know... life and stuff.
Thanks heaps Stace. About to do my HQ column. This vid saves me a lot of head scratching. Cheers.
Excellent 😁
Gday Stace, it’s fantastic your sharing bits like this, this will definitely help someone in the future, great job mate, cheers
Thanks Matty! I hope it helps others... these are the kind of videos I look for but often can't find. Thanks for coming back!
Thankyou! But ermagerd I’m down to the jiggly wiggly bit and I can’t seem to get it to release (after spending a month just trying to get the steering wheel off before finally relenting and buying a puller set
It's definitely fiddly and you might need to try the key in different positions in the lock... I cannot recall which position worked. Either On or Acc.
