My OKC went undetected for 2 years from my dentist until I was bursting with pain and a swollen check and had no idea what was wrong.... then the dentist pulled up the old x-ray from 2 years prior and it almost quadrupled in size. I then went to see oral surgeon who put in the drainage tube to give the jaw some tone to grow back as my jaw was too fragile to have the surgery to remove OKC as it was pencil thin and could collapse. I have since had the surgery and hopefully okay. I am a 35 year old female

This is like reading my own story! Mine was found on an xray in November 2017, officially diagnosed in March 2018, and I had a tube for 16 months before the cyst could be safely removed. They said I'd had it a while, 8-10 years, and it was the biggest their dentistry program has ever treated. They also didn't understand how I'd had no pain, headaches, toothaches, etc, due to how big it was. I'd been clear of it since 2019 but my dentist just found it again on an xray last week and I had a biopsy with my oral surgeon a couple days ago. It may not have been found had I not been having some pain, and when my surgeon cut into my jaw for the biopsy the site was infected. They went ahead and inserted a tube since they're 99% sure it's recurred. I was so hoping to be done with this, especially since they'd used the 5FU to clean the cyst site with and had had 100% success rate with no recurrences at that point, and my xray 6 months ago was clear but this thing has come back with a vengeance and very quick. My jawbone is paperthin on that side and I'm restricted to soft mushy foods only until the bone fills back in more, they were really worried that my jawbone would shatter during the biopsy the other day. 33F

@@booknerd78 hi booknerd- wow what similarities you are right!! I am so very sorry to hear about your recurrence- it’s a paranoia I live with and I’m sure you do too wondering if it will come back. Can I ask if you had any pain before it came back? Just a week ago I have noticed some discomfort in my
Jaw on the troubled side and I’m getting stressed!!! I do have a dentist appt on 8/28 so I’m going to insist on an X-ray. My dentist is also married to the oral surgeon lol so that hopefully helps
Hope you take care and recover …. Please keep us posted!!

    • @booknerd78

@@heymmaammaa I did have pain with the recurrence. It started a month or so ago and was more like an achy pain, like my jaw was tired or strained. When they cut into my jaw this time it started oozing pus, it was infected. Not sure how long it's been infected or what caused the infection. My dentist wasn't going to do an xray last week when I went for my cleaning, but when I told them about the pain they did and found it. My dentist sent my xrays to his brother who's an oral surgeon, and he referred me back to UK. My oral surgeon is in Lexington, where I used to live, so now instead of a 10 minute drice to an appointment it's a 3.5 hour drive one way. They're the closest good oral surgeons that will treat OKCs though, the ones more local to me won't touch them.

In cases where entire buccal cortical plate is involved what needs to be done? I have a case where the okc is in between both the mental foramen & has perforated entire buccal cortical plate right upto the lower border of chin. Only the periosteum must be sticking to the mucosa. Have done decompression & Hoping for buccal plate to grow back before i proceed for enucleation & carnoy's solution.

It depends on patient age also... In young patients mostly bone will form again.

Kcot is not valid anymore as the PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) and Ki67 both that are tumor markers are not constantly evident.
It was stated as a Cyst back again in 2017
