    You're doing a great job here, standing in those skinny tops. But Dave is really remarkable catching the tops and letting them slide gently. So nice to have someone like him around in these circumstances 👍

    I felt that in my stomach in the end of the video when that tall skinny tree shook like that. When I first started climbing, I hated how it felt when a tree shook like that, especially when you are roping from the same tree. It would always feel like it was moving in one direction, like it was falling over. I know it was rocking but those first couple milliseconds felt like it was just coming over

    Your balance and stability are amazing!
    When I tried spur climbing the columnar aspen removal down to 4 inches I could barely keep from swinging around sideways. I switched to standing in choker slings which slowed things down a bit but at least they were more stable. I believe I need alot more practice using spurs. Also, I plan to file the gafs more to the shape you showed on your previous video. Thanks for posting these enjoyable videos Reg.

    I know that bark is slick but what is your though of 2 wraps and a daisy chain hitch to help cut some time for your ground guys taking out those granny knots?

    • @Recoates
      @Recoates  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dave's only been working with me for a couple week....so I'm sending down all kinds of knots just to see how he does. The cows hitch is a very reliable cinching knot which retains a lot of the rope strength, so he will have to get used to that one. We'll probably switch to knot less rigging with slings, when I happy that we've covered enough knots. I think whatever you choose, above all else it better not slip or it'll cost you. Speed comes second. On this particular job, those few tops was the only rigging we had to do. The rest I just cut and held. We were well ahead and under no pressure to rush.

    Do you use shorter spikes on these smooth bark trees that help with fitting the gaffs in on those skinny tops?

    • @Recoates
      @Recoates  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, I find short gaffs too abrupt compared to long ones. They are perhaps more comfortable to stand in, but less piercing and stable.

    Couldn't see what you were roped on to most of the time, bud. The fattest of the tops, the last one you dropped at the end, i suppose. I've got a thing about what I'm roped into... So I'll have my main line on something pretty fat, maybe below my feet (just in case), and a secondary on the skinnier stuff at the top. I usually know in my heart that my pick of the top anchor won't fail, but still it's nice to know i have a backup.

    Off topic Reg I know nothing about forestry and conservation but would respect your opinion on the Fairy Creek protests couple of my children are involved helping them out. Do you have any thoughts? Jan

    • @Recoates
      @Recoates  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      If not for protests, places like Clayoquot sound and Carmanah Walbran would've been leveled years ago. Unfortunately the protesters are not only fighting the logging company and the so called justice system, but the provincial government and the media....who all serve the same masters. At least 800'000 hectares have burnt down through the province this year alone, mostly second growth....but apparently it's a good idea to continue to eradicate the remaining Old Growth ecosystems ? The saddest part is not many people actually care. They turn the other way and pretend they didn't know....but instead join hands with the media and celebrate the construction of yet another new cycle lane, or electric vehicle, like that is what really matters. The government and media are so predictably diabolical here, that I cant find a bad enough word within my vocabulary to suitably describe them. At least, that's how I feel.

      @@w762nato6 you should be proud of your kids. Folks die fighting endless wars to protect democracies, and that includes the right to protest and speak their minds. I have seen not so well informed protesters in younger cottonwood trees. Then I have seen them in some of last 500-800 year old growth in particular drainage that did not need logging doing what I thought was a good protest. Humans can fit in. There is plenty of good logging going on in PNW forests USA.

  • @joshuadavis2470
    @joshuadavis2470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm curious about your tie-off method. Most of my experience has been using the running bowline to chock off a branch for rigging. Looks like you used a girth hitch with a couple backup half hitches? Do you find one has an advantage over the other on skinny stuff like that? Or was that just the knot you chose to tie that time?

    • @Recoates
      @Recoates  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a cows hitch. It's a good cinching knot, especially for heavy loads because the rope retains much of its strength because of the way the knot is configured. In this case though, I used it because the end of the rope has gone very stiff with resin, so not suitable for a bowline

    Nice one Reg, smooth as usual. Tell me, do you have any problems with the bar on the battery saw when in horizontal cuts. As in giving the problem the same as when a bar needs dressing. Regards will.

    • @Recoates
      @Recoates  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've noticed that it starts to get trapped once the chain has been filed past half way. I'm assuming because it gets narrower with each sharpen to the point where the edges of the bar then starts getting stuck in the kerf
