When Hoon mentioned: "The atmosphere changed" it is because the sad part of the story starts. This is when the man starts telling that he used to live happily until he met this person who fell in love with. and now she's making him suffering, he sees life as a painful thing and he realizes that he misses this person and thinks of her a lot and again, he continuos suffering because of her love.
Juan Gabriel was best known because of his compositions, his songs and how he could make us feel really glad or really blue... His songs will remain forever in our hearts.

I do recall that this was the 1990 concert that Mr. Gabriel performed at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City.It was a remarkable performance.
The truth is that in Mexico most of it's people keep the older music alive like a tradition. They are very proud of their great singers and even the new generations know about the older music. So, it's not really that you have a older generation of Mexican subscribers, it's just that you have more Mexican subscribers.

I got to see JG for free at a festival. He sang a song without a mic and let me tell you the man had a powerful voice. I was blown away. RIP you made us so very proud.
Juan Gabriel was such a legend!! My mom and sisteres listened to him when I was growin up in the 90s and even as a kid I loved his songs. His music is treasure, Im not Mexican but man I feel like he was part of my family. When he died the whole world lost a wonderful artist but he left us his songs which will stay with us forever. I’m Chilean and I grew up with Juan Gabriel’s music, as my mum and granny loved him and watched concerts and play his songs in family gatherings. My granny passed less than 2 months before he did in 2016. His music, his lyrics are ICONIC in Spanish speaking countries, and for many of us hold special memories to a different time in our lives. It’s amazing seeing people who have never heard or listened to him before reacting to his performance.

I don’t know from when the video of his performance was. But I can say that he performed the same way pretty much his whole career. With mariachi and his outfits and all. He was a great artist. Loved by so many. An artist many youth know because their parents and even grandparents loved him.

It is a very sad 80's song. My cousin worked with him at that time, in the chorus section. She says he was a polite but very straight person at work, very professional. He passed in 2016. That video was from a presentation in 1991! The song is older than that from 1986 I believe, he wrote it for his mom who abandon him, and then when he was older, he looked her up and found her and this amazing song is the result of that meeting

Although the video is one year old, I just found it; and i loved it XD. Just a few things about the song and it's context (many bits have been covered in previous comments, but I think a summary is not bad).
The song "Until I met you" is, indeed, from the 80' (1986 to be exact); but it's one of the most classic Juan Gabriel song's. He produced more material since, but people still listen with love and passion hhis greatest hits, including this one (around 2010 a biopic of his life even used the name of the song as its title because the link with the singer is unmistakeable).
"Until I met you" is a kind of sad song: the singer states he was a happy person until he that "someone" the song is dedicated to. Since then he has known what is pain and suffering from a broken heart. The "someone" bit is left uncertain because it's been known that Juan Gabriel used experiences in his own life for his songs. Since he was gay, there is a strong chance the person who inspired could have very well been a man (although the feelings the song touches are universal: the pain of love).
Juan Gabriel was kind of eccentric for everyone's tastes, but he was a great showman. He could extend songs adlibing whole phrases and sections (that's why this live performance lasts for more than 9 minutes). He also has one of the most interesting moments of tv because of that: in the late-late night show "Not a bad night" he agreed to extend his performance around five hours (way into the early morning of the next day). Of course, he sang different songs but bascially he gave an marathonic concert in a tv show never designed for that.
The video you watched was filmed in one of his early performances at the Palace of Performing Arts in Mexico, one of the most important stages for culture in this country. But the firts time he sang there it was quite a shock for the cultural community. Back in those days (and still now), Juan Gabriel's genre (named, as a whole, "mexican regional") is considered a "lesser musical genre". When the then director of the Palace opened the space to Juan Gabriel many were shocked the Palace would soil its sanctity (reserved for ballet, orchestra, opera and other forms of "high culture") to give space to a "common musician" singing basic songs about love. Even though, they day of the concert many of those critics ended up singing and dancing to Juan Gabriel's songs and the singer would return around five times to that stage, before his death.
Juan Gabriel was (basically) a self-taught singer, musician and songwriter (he was close to a music teacher in high school, but his musical exploration was mostly on his own). He saw his songs as "poems with music", that's why some consider him kind of a "basic singer". His high popularity, though, indicates that with his own musical understaning he struck something inside people. Even at the time of his death many got very offended when a journalist dared to call the singer "basic" in national press.
He was not gay, he was flamboyant
This video is from the 1980s. I think his music is timeless though. Playing all the musical notes in a way that fitted him and the song, which makes it universal and timeless. He is unique. He wrote this song for his mom. His mom never accepted him. She rejected him. In his many years of stardom she never wanted to see him sing live, never wanted to listen to his music. If that's not a heartbroken man idk what is. This song is filled with those feelings, he sings it with the heart break. But he performed it in a way to not break on stage.

I think the reason a lot of the older music videos are recommended is because to us they are timeless. We grew up listening to this music because of our parents and the talent is so amazing we listen to them still. I’m 24 and love this music and so do a lot of other people my age not just the older generation. Thanks for taking the time to listen to the music of our culture :)

The song was a homage for the singer "Juan Gabriel", 1st time the National Palace of arts were open for a pop singer to perform a concert, it was the year of 1990, and the songs he sang were composed/singed/aired from years 1970 to 1990, some were re interpreted by the composer (Juan Gabriel) to fit a huge success that it was.

The song does talk about never having to suffer until he met someone he once loved but actually I think that this song is a satire of his life. He was orphaned as a young boy because his mom could not support him and his dad was abusive. Then he was falsley encarcaleted, thats where he composed a lot of his songs and this song captures all of his feelings of pain, suffering but shows how he overcame all of this and became what he is. An Icon.
