I want to read The Fraud; I really enjoyed On Beauty, liked N.W. & for some reason when I read White Teeth got distracted towards the end 🙈 (may return to it one day!)
Yesterday (while in a local indie b’shop), I treated myself to the new Claire Keegan (So Late in the Day) & The Complete Poems of Walt Whitman, plus a cup of hot choc 😌 On the b’shop counter was displayed a lovely paperback copy of Demon Copperhead with aqua blue/turquoise coloured page ends. Wow! (I already have a copy so resisted, but I held it for a bit)!
I’m currently reading a library copy of If I Survive You (👍) & also have on loan Prophet Song (I’ve requested the other Booker shortlisted titles). Already read Western Lane which I liked but it’s not a winner imho 😬

Just finished North Woods by Daniel Mason, definitely autumnal ,slightly supernatural vibes. I wasn't sure about it at first but as the chapters went by they built a wonderful history of the land, house and the people connected and it ended as one of my favourites of this year.
North Woods was one I almost included for the autumnal cover picks, as that cover is sooo autumn. I’ve heard from a few other people it takes a while to get into but am looking forward to giving it a whirl.

There’s now an audio version of Prophets Song which makes things easier.

Ooh I hadn’t thought about the Torres being autumnal. I guess the border is. Though not sure about the big block of black, that’s very bleak winter for me. Hahaha.

Simon, you have the dream book collection and library. I could adopt you just for your books.😍❤️📚I have bought loads of books because of your recommendations. Some I have had to buy from the UK. When my husband sees the receipts I always say, “Simon made me do it. It is his fault!” 😂😂 The book, “If An Egyptian Could Speak English,” sounds fantastic. I just bought Lauren Goff’s book and Emma Donahue’s new book. I am reading the second book in C. J. Samson’s Shardlake series. I am really loving it. It is better than the first book. I hope school is going well.
Oh blimey your husband probably isn’t my biggest fan with all this book pushing. Hahahaha. I really want to head back to Shardlake, mum has reminded me of them and now I have a Sansom craving.

Heather O’Neill’s new one sadly isn’t out in the UK but I managed to order it from Canada in hardback and will heads to it at some point as I loved The Lonely Hearts Hotel. I think I actually have all her books on my shelves.

Lolly Willowes! It’s a sneaky brilliant one, in my eyes. I had heard so much about it, I was then so delighted that the reading experience was such a special one for me.

So glad we’re finally in to Autumn and we can fully indulge our cosy inclinations! What an amazing selection of books on this video. I am most excited about The Beholders and The Other Side…. I’m a big fan of anything Victorian.
Listening to the audiobook of Learned by Heart at the moment, and really feel like I’m going to need to read it too, so I can really absorb it all 😊

I love a good Victorian novel too. I’m not sure why I find that time period so particularly comforting but I do! I’m sooo looking forward to Learned By Heart. Sooooo many good books this autumn!

After a bit of a disappointing spell, I have now discovered The Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch. I had seen them around and thought they were about rivers hahah. Well, they are but not in the way you'd think. Have you read them? Anyway, I have just finished the first one and though it's the sort of book you have to just 'believe' I really really enjoyed it and couldn't wait for my reading time in the evening. I reckon it would suit autumn even though it's not actually set then. There is even a spooky house and I know how you like a spooky house!
I haven’t read them. I’ve heard amazing things about them know and the supernatural shenanigans in them. Maybe one day, I do love a spooky house. Ha.

Fab shirt, Simon. I love that color. Great list of books to check out too. I was so taken with the Emma Donoghue book with the sprayed edges that I tracked it down and found it in a bookshop in Scotland. The shipping cost is more than the cost of the book (yikes!) but anything to get my hands on a coveted edition!
This shirt has some real fans. I’ll be wearing it again today for a special video mum and I are filming for later in the month 😉
My spring TBR (I'm in Aus) is becoming ENORMOUS...so many books. I've recently finished The Fraud, interested to hear what you think about it.

Hi, Simon, lovely to see you again! You do have a colourful reading list for this autumn :) I've been saving 'Our Share of the Night' for this autumn, hope to start it next week. 'Mexican Gothic' is the only book from your list that I have read, I still remember it quite vividly - very atmospheric, not too scary, and the author weaves reality with nightmares together so convincingly that it's not only Noemi who can't understand where one ends and the other one starts. And I love that cover too much! After all this time (two years? ah, no, it's three already, just checked 😄) - every time I see it, I'm like - why is it so pretty?

It’s such good telly. I’ve been to Anne Lister’s house a few times in the last few years and can’t recommend it enough. I may have some content I never used that I filmed there I could wedge into that vlog when I make it.

Definitely read Our Share of Night! Every time you ask for recs this is what I want to suggest. It’s chunky but really well paced. I’d love to hear what you think of it!
I have read it and was completely immersed in it. But I don’t think it’s a one read book. I’m sure I missed a lot of the symbols and references to the horror of the real dictator times in Argentina.
It’s definitely on the periphery for autumn. I feel like I may need to make some kind of ‘project’ out of it so I definitely read it. I’m actually chatting to the publishers about a possible spooky something.

I listened to The Other Side of Mrs Wood after seeing it on your channel. It was good mix of gothic/fun. Also interesting to explore the hype around spiritualism in the Victorian era. Love the cover too. Thanks Simon 🍁🍁🍁

Thanks for some great recommendations Simon. I’ve had a great reading month, some highlights include ‘Once there were wolves’ by Charlotte McConaghy, ‘Yellow Wife’ by Sadeqa Johnson and I loved Daphne du Maurier’s ‘The Birds’ short story collection, I’m also going to pick another collection by her ‘Don’t look now’, her short stories are quite wicked and a bit spooky, perfect for this time of year xxx
I have McConaghy’s Migrations on the shelves. I’ve been meaning to read that for ages. I am a HUGE Du Maurier fan, I’ve read all the short stories and they’re absolute Autumn corkers. So are most of her novels, well the ones I’ve read. I’ve not picked her up for ages.

I’m currently reading Ring Shout by P. Djeli Clark. I think you’d enjoy it, historical and horror combined. One quote says “A fantastical cross between Ralph Ellison’ Invisible Man and Buffy the Vampire Slayer” 🎃

It’s a huge hit with many, On Beauty. My mum loved it. I just found it really dull. I don’t love books about academics though so that could have been part of it.

We didn’t do it in 2022 so that one won’t be findable (if that’s a word) the bonus one for 2023 (which should be findable) is a book about a mother and son.
Thank you for letting me know, don’t how I missed the bonus one, but I’ll add it to my list of prompts. Enjoying doing them each month as it gives me a focus at least each month on what’s on my shelf rather than buying more books, which lets be honest I’m still going to buy more books 📚 😊
