My grandfather (born mid 1920’s) told me about going to the nickel and dime movie theaters as a child to see Buster Keaton shorts before they had installed sound. He said that the nickel theater would have a live piano, but the dime theaters had popcorn and an organ. I’d love to take in a movie like that in my lifetime.

@@MusicalZombie Intresting. As someone actually intrested in tech, this was a fun read. The first thing was your complete misunderstanding of the word “joke” Second of all, you forgot to mention many things in why cameras now are more complex, such as: compression, frame rate, bit rate, the actual codec and quality of comonents. And if you were actually really into it, you would know that they used silver hallide crystals.
Plus, we didn’t start from scratch. We still had all our knowledge on lenses, projection, and foucousing. Tv existed ever since 1926, and we knew how to create a raster scan of an image, plus, we knew about photo-sencing materials that sent out electricity when reacted, either directly, or by restricting previous current flow. It isn’t TOO hard to make that a digital signal. I’ll even do it here: take the analogue frequency, find it’s intensity and map which of 256 shades (assuming you use 8 bit colour ) it is nearest to, and then to display it, take the info, and restrict current flow very precisely according to the ones and zeros (or essentially a dac).

One day millions of people will vanish, the rapture is near! Accept Jesus as Lord and Savior! And Live a Faithful Holy Life! He doesn’t want anyone to be left behind! time is short!
Call me a crazy person if you want too, but what I’m saying is the truth and you don’t know and realize, that you need Jesus! You don’t know Him, because you don’t go to Him! He is your only Hope.
Accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, that He died for you and all of our sins, acknowledge that you are a sinner and that you need Him, repent and ask forgiveness, and believe and have faith that He is real

It's a miracle that "young" Buster Keaton got through all the crazy dangerous stunts he did without getting killed. Probably no one would be allowed to do that today. I know he survived because I've seen the "old" Buster Keaton interviewed on TV. 😮

    • @Nigelsmom2136
      @Nigelsmom2136 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

His parents were vaudeville performers. As soon as he could walk his father incorporated him into the act. Today the father would be arrested for child abuse. Buster was tossed around the stage like a sack of potatoes. It's a wonder he survived to adulthood!

    • @TheHappyBachelor
      @TheHappyBachelor 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@Nigelsmom2136 Exactly. In Buster's autobiography he said that he had so much fun being thrown around that he'd start laughing, but he said the audience didn't care for that, so he put on a hang dog face as he got thrown around and they loved it.
Interesting too that when the family went to England, the crowds over there thought the throw-around act was too violent so they had to tame it down a bit. The "do-gooders" as Buster called them were always trying to get their act shut down. One time, in New York, Buster as a kid had to go to the Mayor's office and strip down to show that he wasn't being abused by his Dad and he could take the falls.
There was no fall that Buster Keaton couldn't take and get back up. I've loved the guy since I was a kid.

    Thanx so much for sharing!
    Buster Keaton.
    What a man.
    He could do it all.
    And did!
    No CGI. No camera tricks.
What you saw was all Buster.
Wrote. Directed. Produced. Acted. Comedy. Drama. Composed, played, and sang. Conceived and executed stunts. Designed and built machines and props for gags.
The famous watertower torrent broke his neck! (Sherlock Jr. --- Buster didn't account for such water pressure And he didn't know he'd broken his neck 'til years later at a routine exam when his doctor told him so.)
And, oh, that well-known falling housefront bit! (Steamboat Bill Jr. --- He only had about a 2" clearance in that window.)
    Quite impressive!
    The Great Stone Face.
(Buster found out during his time in vaudeville with his parents, that if he laughed during a bit, the audience didn't, so he trained himself to keep a straight face all the time.)
    The Greatest of All Time!
    A really great guy.
The true Iron Man: broke most every bone in his body, and kept going.
And . . . He had pinpoint accuracy with a custard pie at 27 feet, even in his later years!
RIP, darling Buster, and thanx so very much for the magic, music, and memories.
(Yes. I absolutely adore Buster Keaton. For 70+ years now.)

Sorry for the interruption, I know this has nothing to do with the video but its for you, to whoever is reading this and its urgent.
Now once you accept Him, you will receive the Holy Spirit, now while you are alive, read your bible, follow God, and live for Him.

I can only imagine the joy and laughter of people in the past watching this. It makes me sad as someone born in the 21st century, a someone who's mind has been ruined by internet, humanity's worst and best invention, an algorithm that runs on reactions, a devil which treats dopamine as a currency to trade for engagement. We live in an era in which art is an entertainment and entertainment is an art. What happened to us?

Several years ago at the Somerville Theater (just outside of Boston) I saw Steamboat Bill, Jr. (one of Keaton's two best feature films, I think) done with a live 3-man group called The Alloy Orchestra, who write new, original scores for silent films. It was not only a great experience to see a film like that in a theater with live music, but it showed me a part of the experience I would not have imagined: hearing the audience.
With more subtle "observed" humor (like something being missing that he expected to be there) the laughter was lower in volume AND in pitch -- it was adults "getting" the subtle jokes. When it was slapstick (big, physical comedy), the children would laugh as well, letting out high-pitched, loud laughter, a wonderful sound. Plus, because the music was just an "atmosphere-setter" (important as that is), people talking, commenting, explaining what just happened, even shouting at the screen (kids: "Look out!"), etc. was NOT a problem, as you missed nothing and it just added to the general enjoyment and hubbub in the theater. I wish more theaters would show family-friendly silent comedies (so, all of them!) with or without live music -- it is a great experience!

That's why I stopped watching modern movies, especially from Netflix, and started re-watching old classics from the 1920s to the 1990s. And there are a lot of people like me. Apparently this world has really gone crazy and at some point everything went to hell, including "modern art".
