Hey matt another amazing video! More and more people around here are carrying walking sticks to defend against bold coyotes and other vermin ,including the two legged kind! This spring I do plan to start walking to work for extra fitness. I definitely will be bringing my 5' walking stick made out of ash wood as I work a lot of evenings.
Thanks for the video. This video is great. The jo is a fun weapon. I might not get one because I like the added exercise benefit of spinning my heavy bo, but the jo is very cool.
Hi Matt, I really enjoyed the technique, aspect of this video, but again I find the suggestion of a fairly weak strike to the groin as a first goto move, most people who are using a Jo staff like myself as a mobility device cannot strike his testicles hard enough and fast enough to do serious damage, and once we've struck the game is afoot, and the advantage moves directly to them. I much prefer, that turning and almost fully extended strike to the eye socket or the side of the head/neck area, it's almost undetectable from a passive position and you can even get two hands on the staff as I'm sure you're aware and turn it into a very powerful fast strike even for an old disabled gimp like myself. I have to strike from an innoxious appearing position, due to probable witnesses and our laws. I"ve had a few attempts over the last 5yrs, all conflicts with multiple attackers, from the homeless camps and halfway houses, that Trudeau has forced into our areas as part of his diversification schemes. This is so whites mainly, who are now elderly and who've moved to the country for a quiet life are still forcibly exposed to the problems too as well as us ruralites. This is also a political move to break the voter base. My Jo length staff came into being because I could no longer use my walker or two walking sticks as my wrists are now worn out from 30yrs of dragging myself around on them. I took my Jo, oak with a simple triangular section on it which assists in getting to one's feet if you go down, it also has a hole through it to hold two loops of rope through a stiff piece of leather, which works as a great support and a very fast weapon when aimed at the eyes. I've had it police-approved, as they will confiscate certain walking sticks that they deem weapons. When confronting these people, they mostly wear something baggy in the Ball area so an upward strike or kick is rendered less effective due to that. a Bayonet strike to just above the pubic bone, solar plexus or throat would also remain centerline targets for me if that roundhouse-style blow was out of the question. Not trying to, and sure I can't tell you much about self-defence, but when you lose you're strength and speed, and have a disability it really changes things, especially against multiple armed attackers. Best Regards Ian
Is there any specific techniques for a normal type walking stick? I think I could use most of what he teaches but my stick is shorter and I need to hold it differently. Also what about footwork? As I don't have great balance.
Hi. We use the hanbo, 36 inch staff for a traditional walking stick. See more here th-cam.com/users/livelBUMH8pczLw?feature=share For balance, focus on a wide stance with one foot in front of the other. Knees slightly bent and chin down for better balance.
Sciatica runs through the glutes and the legs. Stretching helps. Especially the hamstrings. Also strengthening the glutes. Cane assisted air squats might help for sure
thank you for posting this i like it
Your instructional videos are awesome, the jo staff is such an excellent tool and makes for a top tier walking stick.

Ok this is good stuff but how do you stop the assailant from taking the stick away and using it on you.
master what is weight and length of the stick that we use
Hello matt How can I go about taking some online classes with the walking stick with you?
