- Bonanza - Episode 16 - El Toro Grande - Ben sends Hoss and Joe to Monterey California to buy a prize seed bull. Along the way they have several encounters.
El Toro Grande
Director: Christian Nyby
Writer: John Tucker Battle
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 2 January 1960 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Ben (Lorne Greene) sends Hoss (Dan Blocker) and Joe (Michael Landon) to Monterey California to buy a prize seed bull. Along the way they have several encounters.
First, two men (Duane Cress and Don Kelly) try to steal the $15,000 Hoss is carrying. Second, Joe butts heads with a jealous neighbor, Eduardo (Armand Alzamora) over the purchase of the bull. Third, the bull disappears when his young caretaker, Epifanio (Alan Roberts) fears the Americans mean to eat his beloved bull. Fourth, Don Xavier (Ricardo Cortez) Lasaro's daughter, Cayetana (Barbara Luna) throws herself at Joe and he's almost caught in a compromising situation with her. Fifth, Hoss has to fight (bare-handed) a bear that wants to eat the bull. Sixth, Cayetana stows away in the bull's wagon and insists that she's going to marry Joe. Seventh, Eduardo, Cayetana's fiance, comes to fight for her and Joe has to duel with rapiers. Eigth, not only do Hoss and Joe have to take Epifanio with them, because where the bull is the boy is, but they also have to take Epifanio's parents.
Ben is not happy to find that Hoss had to pay extra for the wagon and team to bring the bull back, but he's also not pleased to have the Mexican family along. But, there's always plenty of room at the Ponderosa. Adam (Pernell Roberts) asks if they had any trouble. Hoss and Joe quickly recite their adventures. Adam thinks that's a lotta bull.
Reviews:
"I guess Ben Cartwright can't send Adam on all the missions so Hoss and Little Joe go to old Mexico to purchase a bull from big ranchero Ricardo Cortez. A prize breeding bull but he also comes with a family which includes Juan Gonzalez Gonzalez, Penny Santon and little Alan Roberts who's the bull's mascot. He goes with bull and the parents go with him.
Michael Landon has to fend off the amorous advances of Barbara Luna who is Cortez's daughter. She's scheduled to marry Eduardo Montalban, but she's craving a little something something with Little Joe.
As for Dan Blocker he gets to wrestle and kill a bear to save the prize bull.
This was Ricardo Cortez's farewell performance before retirement in a career that included being Greta Garbo's leading man.
A nice episode with accent on the comic side except for that bear duel." Written by bkogangbing on IMDb.com

In case you're from North America and wondering why this bear looks weird compared to ours... This bear is an Asiatic black bear (aka moon bear or white chested bear) which is cast in several episodes. I haven't been able to find his/her name. This type of bear is commonly found in India, China, Korean Peninsula, Japan, Taiwan and Russia.
Thank you, I was wondering about that.
They call them , Hoss Bear 🐻🤠🍺💕🍺🐕🐶
lol maybe not the one at 20:00
@@stefoster7031 yeah that bear is a different… animal altogether.
Yeah I think that's obvious.
At 1:16 when Ben says the name of the bull the look on pernell's face is like holy shit Lorne actually said it right
Yea, or either that look was, finally, after how many takes Lorne?
My thoughts exactly!
Lorne was a better actor than Pernell.
Hoss’ real name got mentioned!! Finally! 🙌🏼🤠
I doubt Hoss would even respond if anyone called him, "Eric" to get his attention.
Loved this episode. What an adventure. Beats me why Ben always sends Hoss and Jo on these errands instead of Adam. Barring the fake bear and even less believable bear fight, this was perfect.
Love that Mexican family too, they're adorable.
This is another old western show that's worth checking out! th-cam.com/video/TipnKbK_ffs/w-d-xo.html
Yes, they're adorable most specially Epifanio.
Because Adam would lose in a bear fight.
20:03 the obviously fake bear here is hilarious!🤣
Ben gave them authority to pay up to 12,000. They paid 10,000 plus 500 for the wagon. So they were still within budget and got a wagon as well.
I don't specifically remember the episodes, just the good feeling of watching the show with my grandpa.
Great episode love the Mexican family and the boy
Me too.
Was stimulated and energised by this very nice we’ll put together episode, as Bonanza always has the finest actors who performed a first class performance.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Hoss's face lights up talking about food. I love it!! Lol. Thank you for the Classic Westerns. Make this COVID curfew and Lockdown tolerable
Little Joe was always such a flirt! 😂. Michael Landon was such a different character in Little House as here.
The classic bull episode
Geez.
I really wish I studied Spanish in school, but no I was foolish and took latin. It made me feel smart, not so smart now.
Lmao 🤣🤣
I know how you feel. I took nearly worthless French
i'm Bonanas for Bonanza
Hoss' real name was Eric! Wow, that's a great trivia question and answer!
Are you just now learning hoss's name is Eric?
@@judyelmer2257 . Yes, and I just learned that also. What's your point?
The Mexican guy was in a few Duke films, that John Wayne folks. He's always terrific
Ben should have been more discreet in the bank and they should have rode off a ways to strap it on Hoss..ugh! But I love how they wiggled out of it😂😅🤣
Yea two murders worth of wiggling
“That’s certainly allot of bull”😂
Great episode 😂❤
Thanks for uploading this
"Well like heck I did!!" Lol I nearly peed my pants that was funny!🤣🤣
You might think the episode ending with happy endings all around, but those Indians are still starving cause they didn't kill Big Red
They didn't seem too upset about it
Senor Valiente (the guitar player) was in "Rio Bravo". He looks a little younger here, but those striped pants are unmistakable.
The singing Mexican man, Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez (May 24, 1925 - February 6, 2006), played Carlos in Rio Bravo, 1959.
I have always wanted to watch this, only because of Ricardo Cortez and it was the last acting he ever performed. I may be in the minority, but I just loved him and his acting, even though he may not have gotten the best movies.
Crazy story and absolutely delightful. Loved the little boy and his parents. They were the warmth that held everything together.
I enjoyed watching this episode😀.Thanks for sharing.
freakin' Hell! This is the best so far. hahahaha
that kids got some guts to be petting a dang bull i'd be scared he'd pierce me
Just love the kid and his folks, what a great family
The kid annoyed me . The bull isn't even theirs
@@BlackangelKatakuri nah, your negative, have a great morning, I think Not 🤠🐕
The kid and his family were great. The kid was an awesome actor.
Immediately baffling: why send Hoss "Caballo" and Joe with $15,000 around the waist to buy big bull, and leave sensible Adam out of it altogether? On 21 minutes, Hoss bashes the bear to death with a rock... very nature unfriendly! Joe loves the beauty like his sister, and she forgives him hehehe!
In world reason: because Joe and Hoss will never learn anything or handle any kind of responsibility if Adam does everything.
In real world reason: Roberts and Greene had the week off.
That must have been the Best 4H Bull ever.
"marry a bunch of cows" lol
Epifanio 😆...so funny!
At 20 minutes in, lol that bear suit really spooked the bull and that kid almost got kicked into another dimension.
Enjoyed this one thoroughly ❤ the mixture was fun. Kept me smiling as i watched😊 feeling good.
❤❤
For Bonanas for Bonanza fans, at 39:40 they refer to a CHOTAcabra (whippoorwill) not a Chupacabra. I was disappointed as well.
Thank you for sharing these! Im a Texan dealing with this covid madness in Australia. This is my ESCAPE from the world.
Anybody see the shadow from the camera when Hoss bent down to pick up the gun? Best show ever.
When?
New York native Ricardo Cortez (born Jacob Krantz in 1900) was a silent movie actor who made the transition to talkies. (Silent era Hollywood tried to pass him off as Latino, French, and Austrian.) This was his last part, after which he became a successful stockbroker.
His best role was as Sam Spade in the original The Maltese Falcon.
Fun show! Thx for the upload! 👍😃
Oh lol, the swordplay is a callback to episode 1. Adam owes Little Joe an apology!
That ending was the best. 😀😀😀
i hate you
There's only one, show as this.
BONNAZA
Will be one show that may live forever
👍👍👍👍👍
Is this the first time Hoss mentions his actual first name, Eric, in an episode?
no i think he does it in epp 1 or two - when they introduce him
@@carloswombat3584 I think you're right
Adam you are correct. Joe could have said in episode one but stopped and just said Hoss.
Watching straight through from Ep.1 and looking for it, yes, this is the first time.
Just when you think you've seen everything, they go and cast Ralph Moody as an Indian chief.
Wait. Joe & Hoss/“Caballo” went to Monterrey, Mexico to get a bull?
That’s 1,900 miles - on horseback?
Expecting a big bull to walk that distance back to Ponderosa?? IDTS
I love the shows.
I don't know where the trains ran back then, but they could have taken it part of the way, and expected to buy a wagon for the bull, just paid more than they expected.
Thank you for posting the good old classic series!

BONANZA - CLASSIC WESTERN - GREAT CAST /GREAT STORY.
Nice!
That was a funny episode!!
I love the sound of that #bajosexto !! Great episode!
I do believe in real life that bear would've made mince meat out of Hoss!
Black bears aren't that tough nor big.
When I was in high school 🏫 the teachers brought a movie 🍿 to watch. It was much like this one and the name of it was The Littlest Outlaw starring James Garner. I don’t remember the name who the little boy who starred in it was but he looked much like this one.
We got blood brothers
And Yankees
Lol
Hoss was wrestling a sloth bear which are from India not Mexico and are known to actually be very aggressive.the Mexican father actor ricardo cortez real name is krantz and is Jewish.
❤❤❤❤ lil Joe
Thanks for sharing classics with exceptional landscape, we missed the Beauty of nature away from any fiction and robots
Glad you enjoyed it
The Indian was correct, Jesus was nailed to a tree or a stake, not a cross.
I thought the film would be stuck and evolve around the two bandits but it sure came around with sooome adventure and surprises...
Hi 🙋♀️ this is a very nice 👍🏻
All these guests are my friend ❤ john whan
Hoss is fighting a dancing.
My dad owned a car lot and when a customer would buy a car sometimes they would pay half and would then have us deliver the car and would pay the rest when delivered so when I turned 16 I would do some of the deliveries with my dad until I got used to driving the truck to do it on my own and sometimes the customers would give tips and my dad let me handle all the money is motto was if you give a kid a big responsibility early on in life it builds trust and turns a boy into a man. The reason the human race is out of control is because the parents, can't blame the youth because it all starts with the parenting.
$15,000 in 1865 was like $244,000 today. They pay that much for a Bull? That would be like paying $244,000 for a car. I'd rather buy a house or some land.
Agreed, and I've heard of super-rich people paying that much for a high-end car. But if you've already made your fortune and can afford to buy a fancy toy like that to play with, that's the prerogative you have. But I'm with you...I'd put it toward income-producing real estate. The Cartwrights, if I had to guess, probably planned to mate the bull with their cattle to produce offspring that they can sell. If that's the case, it wouldn't take too long to make their investment in the bull back.
that $15000 bull was gonna produce a whole bunch of $15000 bulls
My father paid 140k for a bull and I know of others who have paid half a million. It's not to uncommon.
I know old west but they could done better job with bear outfit
Yeah, don't let Hoss pick up a rock, he killed a bear, and did he hit the guy at the beginning with a rock?
This is my favorite episode!
👍
Lovely!!!
Kid and love for his super bull 🤠🐶🍺🍺
LOL, the 12 Labors of Hoss
4:07
"give it to em"
😂😂😂😂
Little Joe, you’re flirting with the devil 👿.
30:34 wow they thought Mexico wasn't North America?
I like bonanza
It's like the writer's tried to fit in as much crazy adventure they could just to set up Adam not believing them...and concluding it was all bull. Lol.
kinda looks like they're using a sloth bear, native to india and sri lanka and the local petting zoo
Ok, hoss had to kill a bear with his bear hands
What would be more appropriate?
Oh no, wrong answer...he beat the bear to death with a rock, he killed the bandit with his bare hands
@@adrian72300
There was a bare hands/ bear hands joke in there.
Good one
Most cute n loving sweet movie👍 👌👌✌😁😍🥰😘😘😘😘❤❤
The Cartrighs are always talking about how money they have. But this time it was.the bank clerk. Those two bandits lost their lives for nothing
" I can take care of them senoriters "
I love the Mexican people! ♥️
my favorite character is Haus.
So many useless add-ones to this episode like Indiana and the two outlaws overall great episode!
At 20:15, the guy in the bear suit dances pretty good with Hoss. The bear is leading. lol...
Big hoss kills a bear he is a bear of man
Thanks for uploading and sharing this old series.
Best regards luck and health.
EL TORO GRANDE BIG RED LOVELY NAME FOR A 1000 PDS BULL FROM MEXICO
I loves episodes like this where there's comedy in it. I guess this is how michael landon get the idea for it which then he uses to part time direct some episodes in little house on the prairie.
Hoss will take care of them señoritas. I was thinking he might have met his match with that oso.
Wow…wrestling a bear…
@ 3:43 😂 slowest draw in the West
The seniorita looks as if she is part Asian.
❤
Best show ever but One of the more silly episodes. Hard to sit through this one.
Patron of the impossible,,, where have I been,, virgin the Guadalupe, step aside. Lol
